1) In what ways does your
media product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
product
Our film ‘RED’ depicts a woman who is dealing with a dark secret by
trying to suppress her emotional conflict. After discovering her
husbands infidelity the protagonist murders him in cold blood. Our
film follows her carrying out mediocre tasks which all appear
meaningless whilst trying to conceal the body, which hides in the
shadow.
Mise-en scene was a very important feature of our film in terms of establishing the
genre. A convention I chose to use was low-key lighting. This was vital in building
suspense for the audience. In the scene where viewers are shown the lipstick mark
on the shirt collar, which is used to show his infidelity, we see a close up of the
protagonists face with extreme low-key lighting. This effect is one that is used
persistently throughout the thriller genre. This adds to the dramatic effect of the
scene and helps to put across the darkness within, highlighting to the audience that
something is going to happen. In the film Batman: Dark Knight Rises, low-key lighting
in order to highlight the villainous identity of the Joker and to build suspense for the
audience. This acted as inspiration when deciding upon the lighting in our
production.
Another use of mise-en scene was costume. The female character wore a red dress
and high heels. Red was a dominant colour used throughout our film and the colour
imagery helped to convey the messages of danger and anger. It also conveys
passion. The murder of her husband was, ultimately a crime of revenge, passion and
impulse. Here we somewhat challenged the conventions as traditionally characters
wear dark clothes or ones that match the setting eg. A man in an office wearing a
suit. Our location and costume contradicted one another intentionally we were
trying to convey that she was overdressed to take her mind away from the thought
of her husband. Below are some examples of the outfit she wore.
Editing was also important in building suspense. The pace of the film
begins very slowly and increases as the narrative begins to unravel. Here
we have developed upon an existing convention as many thrillers begin
fast-paced and remain consistently so throughout the entire film,
whereas ours changes based on the development of the narrative. By
changing the pace we could keep the audience engaged and build
suspense gripping them up until the final scene.
When using camera shots we followed the conventions closely. Thrillers
tend to use close ups frequently, as did we. There were many instances
in which we used close ups to draw attention to key things in the shot
for instance we used a close up of the protagonist painting her nails. We
also used them on her face in order to clearly show her emotions. The
film ‘Psycho’ is a well known thriller which makes use of close-ups
consistently throughout below you can clearly see the way it has been
used to demonstrate the facial expressions and emotions of the
character. This is a style we tried to mimic within our own film.

  • 7. Toderov deloped a theory of narrative structure of film. This included 5 stages as show below. Our film both abides by and deters from these conventions in various ways. Our film starts with an equilibrium as expected by the theory as all is calm and appears undisturbed. The next stage we continue to follow as the disruption is revealed as the dead body comes into the knowledge of the audience. However our film then goes onto break the conventions as the main character seemingly remains undifferentiated to the chaos which has befallen her and there is no order nor resolution presented to the audience. We decided to leave our film on a cliff-hanger as we felt it was more suspenseful and had an overall better impact. This therefore breaks the conventional narrative structure of the film. 1) Equilibrium 2) Disruption 3) Realisation 4) Restored Order 5) New Equilibrium
