3. Close up of main characters
face
Background very blurry
Foreground very clear focuses the
audience attention on character
Whole scene very darkly lit even characters face
framed in darkness clearly night time
Calm guitar music in
background
Narration starts talking
about looking for a job
Very sombre tone set
in this first screenshot
4. While it is still night scene is much
more brightly lit
Accident has clearly
happened
Even though there's clearly an accident
the main character seems more interested
in filming it than helping Even the emergency services
don’t seem too bothered
Accident has led to a
very severe injury
Same sad/slow
guitar music is still
playing
Voice over talking about
growing into a career implying
that this is something the
main character is regularly
doing
Main character is wearing normal
clothes could imply that this is either
not his normal job and is just
something happened across
Medium shot to get all the
information in the scene
5. Looking down on the camera makes
the audience feel more vulnerable
Again scene light darkly
very clearly nigh time
Main character half in dark and half in
light could imply that he is going
through a conflict in his mind
Close up of main
characters face to show
the audience just how
emotionless he is in the
face of the previous
accident
In this scene the voiceover asks “who
am I” this could imply that he doesn’t
really know what his place is and what
his life has come to
From the way the camera
pans down from the main
characters camera to his face
tells us that he's filming the
accident
Quite a creepy mood set as from the
main characters face and the information
shown in the previous parts of the trailer
it is obvious that he only sees the
accident as a way to profit. The lack of
emotion from him is quite disturbing
The consistent dark lighting
reflects the dark tone that
the whole trailer has
shown
Focused character
clearly has all the
power in this scene
6. Face is lit by unnatural source
and has a green hue to it
implying some sort of sickness
Has a slight
confused/lost look on his
face clearly in a
unfamiliar situation
People seem to be going on with there
business in the background maybe
implying that everything happening is a
normal situation to them
Setting is in a newsroom showing
where the main character is
either working or wanting to work
Voiceover is talking about
how he wants to work in
television news showing
where this characters ark
is going
Again the same
sombre guitar music
still playing keeping
the mood still fairly
sad
Whole scene is fairly
well lit giving a bit of a
contrast to the previous
scenes and rest of
trailer
7. The text in this frame is the same style and font from the rest of the trailer. The
completely black background contrasted with the electric blue text makes it very
striking. However unlike a lot of other teaser trailers there is nothing going on
that the text is playing over this would bright a lot more attention to the people
involved in the film particularly this frame as it is advertising Jake Gyllenhaal as
an academy award nominee.
8. the main character is right in the
background of this frame making the
focus on the accident
surprisingly despite the
accident the scene is much
more brightly lit than the
rest of the trailer
We get a hint at the severity of the
accident with just the victims leg
sticking out and the emergency
services crowding around
While the emergency services
are crowding around they don’t
seem to be doing much to help
maybe implying that they cant
Music has started to pick
up a bit getting faster and
is building up to something
The main character seems
to be attempting to film
the accident but is being
stopped by the emergency
services showing that he is
not supposed be there
9. Main characters face is not shown however he is the
darkest presence in this whole frame. Shows his
nature and how he is being tainted
The movie set in the background
starting to show where this
character has gone and the job
that he has taken. Hints at
where the film is going to be set
Seems to be the person with
power in the scene from the fact
that she is standing and with the
gestures seems like has a bit of
power
Despite the fact that she is
standing and he is sitting
the framing if the shot still
gives him more of a
presence as he appears
larger and closer than her
Music is sill slowly
building and speeding up
seems like it is going
towards a climax. Maybe
showing that theses
scenes in the movie will
also be tension builders
The TVs are providing all of
the light in this frame could
imply that the only thing
that is giving light and
purpose in this film is the
actual news itself once its
been filmed and presented
10. One of the only scenes in the teaser trailer that
is set during the day this could be to do with
the fact that the new character in this seen is
providing this sort of brightness that we
haven’t seen before
Sunglasses could be to show that
he is covering up and is trying to
avoid the outside world. By not
being able to see his eyes other
characters in the movie and the
audience would find it harder to
figure him out
Narration in the film talks about
good people as this frame come
up also goes a way to show that
the other character in this seen
might be one of the better
character in the movie
No cars around on a calm
street, this coupled with the sun
gives a sort of lazy attitude to
the scene maybe is one of the
calmer scenes in the movie to
give the audience some sort of
a break
Another scene where the main character has
a very blank emotionless face shows that is
character on the outside at least is very
coverd up and doesn’t really seem to express
many or any emotions or at least doesn’t
want to reveal them
The main character is again
closer to the camera giving
him more power on he scene
also we only get half of his
face shown to us while the
other characters whole face is
shown maybe implying who is
more open in terms of there
personality
11. First time that we see the main character
going properly crazy and completely
expressing all of his emotions could imply
he reached the breaking point by this point
in the film
The mirror could imply that he is
looking at himself more than just
physically and the reason he has
gone so mad is because of his
hatred of what he is seeing
Despite the disturbing imagery
this is one of the brighter lit
scenes this could be showing
that he is expelling his demons
and is slowly going towards the
light so while he seems to be in
a bad place on the surface deep
down he is slowly recovering
As he grabs the movie we get a big
sudden sound in the music that really
helps to emphasise this scene. Because
of the music here the scene has much
more of an impact
While his face is in the light the
back of his head is coverd in
darkness this could show his inner
conflict and the half and half
struggle that he is going trough
and the conflict of good and bad
going on inside him
His scream in this scene is a
an extremely angry one
more than it is one of
desperation or a cry for help
it really seems like this is
pure rage and frustration
going on and nothing else
12. General analysis
• The whole sequence is 1 minute and 34 seconds long
• In terms of genre and narrative it’s fairly obvious that it is a thriller film. What you can gleam from the narrative is that it’s about a man
looking for a job who later gets once filming horrible accidents for the news and slowly goes crazy because of it. This means that I would
expect the film to be a character study on the main character as we see his mental state slowly deteriorate due to the intense and harsh
nature of his job.
• The questions that it leads the audience with are mostly things like what company does he work for, how crazy will he actually get and what
will be the catalyst that leads to his eventual downfall. Most of the questions I think that the audience would have coming away from this
film are mostly just questions about the character and what will happen to him.
• the film has a few unique selling points firstly is just the actor playing the main guy: there was a lot of hype for Jake Gyllenhaal for this film
as not had he proved his acting talents in movies like Donnie Darko and broke back mountain. But the physical transformation that he went
under was also being praised as he lost a stupid and frankly dangerous amount of weight in a very short amount of time. Another unique
selling point about the film is the idea was that it was a new idea that not many films had looked into before which is the mental state and
personalities of the people who film the horrible situations that the news is reporting.
• I think that this film would be targeted at people in the age bracket of 16-25 and 25+ this is because they would generally be the type of
people who could understand the film in depth and pick up on a lot of the meaning. I would also imagine that maybe middle class and up
would be the focus as the film looks at what happens to people who do the jobs that they don’t even think about like television news.
Partly because the characters in the film are being presented as becoming slowly unstable as the stress and nature of their job slowly
effects them and for most people they don’t even consider this and to some extent are just not aware of it so I think this film would be a bit
of an eye-opener for people who watch it.
• From this film I think we will be able to take a few elements of it, for example the constantly dark setting is something that would be useful
for our film to make it as tense as possible. But not only that but the character study is something that I think would be good for our film as
we look at what can happen to an average person if they are put in to an extra ordinary and stressful situation for an extended period of
time
13. tagline
Starring actor
Title
Release date
Previous films producers
worked on
Other company's and people
who worked on the film
We see a full shot of the main character
standing in a very neutral non
threatening position however from the
facial expression it is more unnerving
than it should be
Wearing very normal clothes
adding to the idea that he is
just a normal person who's job
slowly gets to him
The zipped up clothing does imply a nervousness
of character who is relatively private and not
used to showing emotion and enclosed the
clothes help to represent this
While it is actually quite a bright
poster there isn't actually lot of
light shown in the poster as it is
clearly night and there is not a lot
of light pictured in it
His haunted expression and the dark nature
of the whole film go towards showing that
it is intended for a more mature audience
this helps to advertise to the actually target
audience
Easily recognisable as Jake Glyn
hall so that a selling point of the
film is shown very clearly
Can see the camera he is holding implying that some sort of filming is
going to be vital to the film in terms of plot or just what the film is based
around
The dark nature of the poster combined
with the character shown helps show that
the film is likely to be some sort of thriller
as there's clearly going to be a focus or
darker themes and a look into what is a
disturbed person
The fast car shown in the poster
could imply that there are going to
be some action set [pieces in the
film with maybe some sort of car
chase or race this helps to draw in
audience members that may prefer
action to a thriller
Film is clearly set in the
city so we know that
more rural settings and
situations wont be
present in the film so
might have a more
modern feel to it
Producers pervious work shown so
fans of that film will want to see
this one
14. Poster general analysis
• I think that the marketing are trying to attract an audience by showing that this a going to be a darker film
than they might be used to that deals with more mature themes. Also by clearly showing the starring actor
in the poster the audience know what to expect in terms of who the focus is going to be on in the film. The
general items in the poster also help sell the film as the sports car in the background implies that the film
will have a bit of action in it to draw in a more varied audience. Also on top of that the camera that is clearly
shown helps to sell what a big element of the film is which is the idea of how a news camera operator can be
effected by his job. This works with the teaser trailer as all of these elements are shown throughout; Jake
Gyllenhaal gets most of the screen time in the teaser showing that he is going to be the starring actor, there
is a car chase in the teaser and a car accident so the sports car in the poster is seen. The trailer also has a fair
few shots of the main character filming things so the camera makes sense to. Finally we get hints at the
characters deteriorating mental state and paranoia in the trailer so the haunted expression he has on his
face in the poste makes sense to. In conclusion I think that the poster and teaser work together well and
help to create a clear brand identity for the film a well as help to sell it.
• From this we can see that the poster should help to show what the film is going to be like in terms of genre
theme and nature so that the audience who like that sort of film can see it and decide to watch it. Not only
that but putting hints to what will happen in the film with items and objects seems like a really clever idea to
help sell our film as people can see those items and make assumptions about what is going to happen in the
film and then see it to see whether they were right. Finally putting the starring actor on the poste isn't
something that would necessarily help our film as we would technically be unknown people that no one has
heard of before that that part of the poster is less important or us
