2. LE MANOIR DU DIABLE (1896)
• The first depictions of supernatural events appear in several of the silent
shorts created by the film pioneer Georges Méliès in the late 1890s, the best
known being Le Manoir du Diable, which is sometimes credited as being the
first horror film.

4. NOTRE DAME DE PARIS (1911)
• First full length film that included a type of monster/beast. This allowed more
full length horror films to be released as they were gaining popularity.
6. DRACULA (1931)
• American pre-code vampire horror.
• "remarkably effective background of creepy atmosphere"
7. 1940’S
• The genre of horror declined mainly due to world war 2 but films such as
House Of Dracula and The House Of Frankenstein were released.
8. 1960’S
• Introduced the new sub genre, thrillers and slashers. The iconic Psycho film directed by
Alfred Hitchcock was released. Others films included The Night Of The Living Dead
(1968).
• Some critics cite the italian giallo films and the British produced psychological thriller or
psych horror films Peeping Tom by Michael Powell and Pscyho by Alfred Hitchcock as the
earliest influential slasher films.
10. 1980S
• Increase in technology being used to create graphics and special effects
• Nightmare On Elm Street and The Shining were produced.
• Childs play also released - slasher/thriller film.
11. 1990’S
• Genre moved away from monsters and focused more on humans for
example a psychopath killing others
• Silence Of The Lambs released, another iconic and widely popular horror
film.
12. 2000’S
• New subgenre called teen horror developed, the film follows a group of
teenagers who would get killed one by one for example Final Destination,
The Ring and The Grudge.
