Somatization disorder is characterized by chronic multiple somatic symptoms that are vague, presented dramatically and involve multiple organ systems. Patients with somatization disorder have a tendency to seek relief through overmedicating with analgesics or antianxiety agents. Some key signs and symptoms include multiple somatic complaints that are unexplained by medical findings, pain in at least four body locations including two gastrointestinal symptoms, one sexual/reproductive symptom and one neurological symptom. Effective treatment involves individual and group psychotherapy as well as psychopharmacology using antidepressants or anticonvulsants.
