Social Movement
-is a large group of people who are
organized to promote or resist
some social change.
Types of Social Movement
Alternative Movements
– refers to movements that aim to
achieve some limited but specific
change in individuals.
Redemptive Movements
- refers to movements that also focus
on the individual, but they seek total,
not partial change.
Transformative Movements
– refers to movements that aim at total change in
the existing social order. There is a need to re-
structure or to completely overhaul the existing
structure which members perceive as unjust,
exploitive and anti people’s well being.
Reformative Movements
- refers to movements that emphasize changing
society rather individuals. Their aim is moderate
or partial change since they view the present
social order as basically workable.
Mass Communication and Mass Media
Mass Communication
– refers to an organized communication through
organizational structures. It is directed towards a
relatively charged audience during a short period of time.
Mass Media
- refers to the various means materials or products, both
in print and electronic broadcasting form used by
transmitting, distributing or diffusing information to a
large number of people.
Print
– involves printing, publishing, photocopy ,
copy reproduction, duplication etc.
Broadcast
– is the distribution of the audio or video
signals which transmit programs to an
audience or a large number of people.
Purposes of Mass
Media• To provide information to a large number of
people.
• To provide education to masses.
• To provide entertainment such as movies, music
sports, video and computer games.
• To clarify /versatile issues and social concerns.
• To serve as avenues for propaganda, public
relations & political communications.
•To provide avenues for expression of partisan
and non partisan ideas.
•To provide avenues for public service
announcement.
•To generate public opinion or call for collective
behaviour and social movements.
•To serve as a vehicle for the expression or
aroused feeling, pent-up emotions and
redress grievances.
Negative Characteristics of
Mass Media•The manipulation of information for the benefit of a
particular interest group or group of people most
especially by the moneyed class who can pay the
prohibitive cost of the print and electronic broadcast
media.
•The manipulation of the large groups of people through
media outlets for the benefits of the particular political
party and or group of people.
•Bias political or otherwise towards favouring a certain
individual.
Meaning and Nature of
Propaganda• Propaganda is a form of communication aimed at
influencing the attitude of a community toward
some cause or position.
• Propaganda is neutrally defined as a systematic
form of purposeful persuasion that attempts to
influence the emotion, attitudes, opinions, and
actions of specified target for ideological, political
purposes through the controlled transmission of
one sided messages.
ad nauseam - referring to something that has been done or
repeated so often that it has become annoying or tiresome.
ad hominem - directed against a person rather than the position
they are maintaining.
"vicious ad hominem attacks“.
-relating to or associated with a particular person.
Appeal to fear – this approach is to build support by arousing
panic and anxiety in the people.
Jump on the Banwagon - includes the inventible victory and join
the crowd appeals.
• Black and White Fallacy – Approach presents only two choices,
with the product or idea being propagated as the better choice.
• Testimonials – these are quotations or statements in or out of
context especially cited to support or reject a given policy, action
program or personality.
• Beautiful People – This Propaganda deals with famous people or
depicts attractive, happy people.
• Transfer or Association - This is the technique that involves
projecting the positive or negative qualities of a person.
• Name calling or demonizing the enemy – this refers to a giving of
a derogatory name to a person or group to make people reject or
condemn the person or the idea of that person or group w/out
examining the evidence.
• Glittering Generalities – These are emotionally – loaded words
and stereotypes applied an idea or analysis.
• Scapegoating - is assigning a blame to an individual or group,
thus alleviating feelings or guilt from responsible parties and / or
distracting attention from the need to fix the problem for which
blame is being assigned.
• Euphoria – refers to the use of an event that generates euphoria
for happiness or using an appealing even to boost moral.

Social movement

  • 1. Social Movement -is a large group of people who are organized to promote or resist some social change.
  • 2. Types of Social Movement Alternative Movements – refers to movements that aim to achieve some limited but specific change in individuals. Redemptive Movements - refers to movements that also focus on the individual, but they seek total, not partial change.
  • 3. Transformative Movements – refers to movements that aim at total change in the existing social order. There is a need to re- structure or to completely overhaul the existing structure which members perceive as unjust, exploitive and anti people’s well being. Reformative Movements - refers to movements that emphasize changing society rather individuals. Their aim is moderate or partial change since they view the present social order as basically workable.
  • 4. Mass Communication and Mass Media Mass Communication – refers to an organized communication through organizational structures. It is directed towards a relatively charged audience during a short period of time. Mass Media - refers to the various means materials or products, both in print and electronic broadcasting form used by transmitting, distributing or diffusing information to a large number of people.
  • 5. Print – involves printing, publishing, photocopy , copy reproduction, duplication etc. Broadcast – is the distribution of the audio or video signals which transmit programs to an audience or a large number of people.
  • 6. Purposes of Mass Media• To provide information to a large number of people. • To provide education to masses. • To provide entertainment such as movies, music sports, video and computer games. • To clarify /versatile issues and social concerns. • To serve as avenues for propaganda, public relations & political communications.
  • 7. •To provide avenues for expression of partisan and non partisan ideas. •To provide avenues for public service announcement. •To generate public opinion or call for collective behaviour and social movements. •To serve as a vehicle for the expression or aroused feeling, pent-up emotions and redress grievances.
  • 8. Negative Characteristics of Mass Media•The manipulation of information for the benefit of a particular interest group or group of people most especially by the moneyed class who can pay the prohibitive cost of the print and electronic broadcast media. •The manipulation of the large groups of people through media outlets for the benefits of the particular political party and or group of people. •Bias political or otherwise towards favouring a certain individual.
  • 9. Meaning and Nature of Propaganda• Propaganda is a form of communication aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position. • Propaganda is neutrally defined as a systematic form of purposeful persuasion that attempts to influence the emotion, attitudes, opinions, and actions of specified target for ideological, political purposes through the controlled transmission of one sided messages.
  • 10. ad nauseam - referring to something that has been done or repeated so often that it has become annoying or tiresome. ad hominem - directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining. "vicious ad hominem attacks“. -relating to or associated with a particular person. Appeal to fear – this approach is to build support by arousing panic and anxiety in the people. Jump on the Banwagon - includes the inventible victory and join the crowd appeals.
  • 11. • Black and White Fallacy – Approach presents only two choices, with the product or idea being propagated as the better choice. • Testimonials – these are quotations or statements in or out of context especially cited to support or reject a given policy, action program or personality. • Beautiful People – This Propaganda deals with famous people or depicts attractive, happy people. • Transfer or Association - This is the technique that involves projecting the positive or negative qualities of a person.
  • 12. • Name calling or demonizing the enemy – this refers to a giving of a derogatory name to a person or group to make people reject or condemn the person or the idea of that person or group w/out examining the evidence. • Glittering Generalities – These are emotionally – loaded words and stereotypes applied an idea or analysis. • Scapegoating - is assigning a blame to an individual or group, thus alleviating feelings or guilt from responsible parties and / or distracting attention from the need to fix the problem for which blame is being assigned. • Euphoria – refers to the use of an event that generates euphoria for happiness or using an appealing even to boost moral.
