Broaden & Deepen Your Digital Footprint
Now more than ever, communication has become individualized, instant, & easy.
The rise of social media is directly proportionate to the development of mobile communications.
Social media is to the world wide web what email was to the internet in 1997.
We are beyond the precipice. Clearly, ‘Web 2.0’ is never going away.
For a concise understanding of the second phase of the world wide web, watch Kevin Kelly’s
‘Next 5,000 Days of the Web’ presented at the TED Conference in 2007.

Search principles are at the root of how effectively you deepen & expand
your digital footprint.
How do others find what you have to say?
What are the current search practices?
Search usage as of March 2010: Google holding, Bing increasing, Yahoo decreasing
People no longer search solely from a search engine, but also search from their trusted social media communities,
such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
How can you leverage Google’s algorithm to raise your on-line presence
to the top of the organic search results?
The way Google arrives at search results changed considerably January 1, 2009, to allow for current feeds & immediate
updates provided by blogs & social media community chatter. In other words, Google likes blogs over static web sites.

Content is still king.
When you say something of value, others will share it with their friends. Sharing is a distinctive
element to social media communities.
Posts do not need to be long.
Headings, comments & links need to be relevant to each other.
Use keywords in your heading & 1st sentence of the 1st paragraph.
Give ‘shout-outs’ to others.
Attach valuable, relevant links where possible.
Write comments on others’ blogs, & attach your own post link, if relevant.

In 1999, static web sites were giving way to more exchanges of information.
In 2004-2005, BLOGing grew in popularity. (BLOGS = regularly updated WEB Logs)
Facebook began to take hold in 2005, appealing to high school graduates registering for college classes.
Podcasts increased in popularity with the growing popularity of iPods.
Just as iPod changed culture in the mid 2000’s, so too, the iPhone changed the way we communicate.
Smart phones like the iPhone, Blackberry, Droid, & others allow us to share info, instantly.
Regular uploads to our BLOGS, communities, & microBLOGs like Twitter is considered mainstream.
The word BLOG & use of a personal BLOG is almost synonymous with ‘web site’.

Use WORDPRESS to create your own blog, in just minutes!
If you like to read & write, choose to begin with your own blog.
Use their templates to create your ‘site’.
There are 3 sources: WordPress.com / WordPress.org / WordPress.mu
Choose WordPress.com over the other 2; it’s free, fun & uncomplicated.
(You can expand more later.)
Do you like being in front of, or behind the camera? Prefer chatting with others via video rather than the written word?
You can define ‘you’ by simply creating your own simple videos, or drawing from others’ videos.
Then, feature them on your own ‘tv channel’. TheirTUBE becomes YOUTube.
Do you have a way with words, but prefer voice over video clips or written text?
Then, create your own podcast on your favorite topic.
If you are new to social media or the web, this would be the least recommended choice for your beginning.

RSS = Real Simple Syndication
This is how you get your favorite BLOG updates sent to you , automatically.
You need a Feed Reader in order to receive & read your favorite posts by other bloggers.
Another word for Feed Reader is ‘aggregator’ since it collects posts from other web sites for you.
There are several popular Feed Readers you can download for free.
My favorite is Google Reader since I use it to ‘RSS’ favorite blogs to various iGoogle tabs.
