Social media has enabled citizens to document and share political events, giving voice to the less powerful. Twenty years ago, media coverage of China's Tiananmen Square protests was restricted, but now YouTube hosts video clips from the event. The rise of citizen journalism through websites and social sharing allows the public to play a role in enacting change and shining light on important political issues in a way that was not possible before.
