This document discusses how interactive whiteboards, also known as Smartboards, can bring classroom lessons to life. It provides an overview of how Smartboards work and their functionality. Examples are given of how Smartboards can be used across different subject areas to engage students and help teachers present lessons in an interactive way. The document concludes by demonstrating how to create and share Smartboard lessons.

Objectives By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: Successfully interface with any interactive whiteboard device, including SMARTBoard, Promethean, StarBoard, and others Describe how interactive whiteboard technology can be useful in the classroom environment to engage students and present information more clearly Create lesson plans and instructional activities integrating interactive whiteboard technology

3. So what defines a “Smartboard”? Interactive whiteboards, often referred to by the most popular brand name, “Smartboard,” are whiteboard surfaces that interface with a computer and projector so users can manipulate the computer interface by touch or electronic pen. Self-contained LCD flat panel Smartboards are also available.

4. General Uses of Smartboards Dynamic replacement for traditional whiteboards, chalkboards, or flip charts for lectures and presentations Students can interact with computer media and programs on a larger scale, collaborate with others, and demonstrate what they know on-demand Allows user to record what is written and displayed onscreen so that students can go back and view any portion of a lesson Excellent for teaching computer software and problem-solving skills

Smartboards in the Subject Areas Language Arts : Brainstorming, editing, 6+1 Writing Process, highlight words, electronic word walls, e-portfolios Math : Create and save formulas, graphs, and equations easily; have students demonstrate problem-solving skills on-the-fly or collaboratively Social Studies / Science Show relationships between words and ideas with Inspiration/Kidspiration, manipulate onscreen tools in interactive maps, simulations

SMART Board Tools You can draw and write anywhere and the SMART Board Tools can recognize your handwriting and convert it to text, as well as recognize the shapes you create, with the Shape Recognition Pen tool You can also add sounds or hyperlinks to drawn objects Many fill effects and colors are available for both shapes and text Notebook files can be edited at the computer later on if needed, and can be exported as several easily accessible file types, including Web pages, graphic formats, or PDF

Integrating Smartboard Technology Bringing interactive whiteboard technology into the classroom effectively means taking advantage of the Smartboard’s features For example, when you or your students do presentations, use the pens to highlight important points Or, bring media from the Notebook Gallery into demonstrations or encourage students to use them to illustrate what they are learning By their nature, Smartboards allow more than one person to interact with the computer interface, so encourage collaborative assignments
