Creating SMART goals involves setting goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Specific goals clearly define what needs to be accomplished, like implementing a 120% sales target in the second quarter. Measurable goals allow progress to be tracked concretely toward completion. Attainable goals can be achieved through developing necessary skills within a realistic time frame. Relevant goals represent objectives someone is willing and able to work towards. Time-bound goals provide urgency by anchoring the goal within a specific timeframe, like completing a goal by June 1st.

Why set goals? Having a clear direction for your future and a picture of what you plan to do is
extremely important for maintaining a positive attitude. Having clear goals is a key to creating and
maintaining a positive mindset even when “things get tough.”
Qualities of Goals
In order for goals to be useful, they need to have the following qualities:
The goals that you set for yourself must be based on your values and beliefs.
No one else can choose goals for you. Others can make suggestions, but you must "own" your
goals for them to be useful.
You must decide what you want to achieve.

understanding of what is important to you.
You will also begin planning ahead for your Unit 8 project by setting up an interview with a professional in your chosen field.
Goal Setting
In Unit 7 you investigate the power of setting goals. You seek to recognize the importance of goal setting and actually apply this
S.M.A.R.T. concept to your Unit 7 interview with completion and submission of your project in Unit 8. Goal setting will assist you and
motivate you to reach for success.
Why is Goal Setting Important?
Imagine you decide to build a house. You do not bother with setting any goals for its completion. Wow. What a mess. Imagine you want
to be a doctor when you grow up, but never thought you needed to take a science class in high school, or did not even plan on going to
college.
Goals motivate us.
Goals stimulate your creativity. You use one of the best creative words possible — you visualize. When you engage in visualization,
you are on the top step of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. You are fully engaged in critical thinking. Without goals, you will not achieve that
visualization.

Goals inspire you.
Goals help you to recognize that you are the creator of your own stories. You can achieve anything that you want to achieve with the
inspiration you will get from goal setting. You will take things one step at a time and with each step you feel the power of completion.
Goals challenge you.
If not for the challenge involved in accomplishing a goal, you would not get past the first step. Goals do not have to be extremely hard to
reach, and they should not be too simple either, as there is no challenge in that. You reach when you set goals. You want that object,
job, or future that.

3. A specific goal has a much greater chance of

But a specific goal would say, “Implement

4. To set a specific goal you must answer the six "W"
questions:
Who: Who is involved?
What: What do I want to accomplish?
Where: Identify a location.
When: Establish a time frame.
Which: Identify requirements and constraints.
Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of
accomplishing the goal.

When you measure your progress, you stay on
track, reach your target dates, and experience
the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you
on to continued effort required to reach your
goal.
Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress
toward the attainment of each goal you set.
6. To determine if your goal is measurable, ask
questions such as
o How much?
o How many?
o How will I know
o when it is accomplished?

7. Creating attainable goals
When you identify goals that are most important to
you, you begin to figure out ways you can make
them come true.
You develop the attitudes, abilities, skills, and
financial capacity to reach them. You begin
seeing previously overlooked opportunities to
bring yourself closer to the achievement of
your goals.
8. Creating attainable goals
You can attain most any goal you set when you
plan your steps wisely and establish a time
frame that allows you to carry out those steps.
Goals that may have seemed far away and out
of reach eventually move closer and become
attainable, not because your goals shrink, but
because you grow and expand to match them.
9. Creating relevant goals
To be relevant, a goal must represent an objective
toward which you are both willing and able to work.
A high goal is frequently easier to reach than
a low one because a low goal exerts low
motivational force. Some of the hardest jobs
you ever accomplished actually seem easy
simply because they were a labor of love.
10. Creating time bound goals
When do you want to accomplish your goal?
“Someday” won't work. But if you anchor it
within a timeframe (“by June 1st”), then you
have already set your unconscious mind into
motion to begin working on the goal.
A goal should be grounded within a time frame.
With no time frame tied to it, there is no sense
of urgency.
