Lindsey Woliver set a SMART goal to increase mobility and strength in her right knee through physical therapy exercises twice daily by the end of November following knee surgery. She wanted to regain the ability to run and play sports like rugby. While her work and class schedule prevented daily exercise as planned, she was still able to participate in rugby drills and has regained full motion in her knee with some strength and running ability, leaving her pleased with progress ahead of her doctor's appointment.

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

2. SMART GOAL: Increase mobility and strengh in my
right knee
Specific- Do post op. physical therapy exercises twice
a day either at home, at the gym, or at rugby practice
do build strength and mobility in my right knee.
Measureable- I will make sure this is done so to not
lose any motion and see progress everyday
Attainable- I want to be able to run and play sports
again
Realistic- I go to the gym and practice everyday. Since
i cant run I can spend practice time doing exercises
that my physical therpist has given me.
Time-This should be done by the end of Nov
3. Personal Reasons
I want to be able to stay active
I want to healthy
I want to run
I want to play rugby and not have to
worry about my knees
4. Positives
Thanks to my class schedule I was able
to make every practice this season.
I stretched and warmed up with the team
I was able to help with drills and join in
on things like push ups and ab work
outs.
5. Negatives
Due to my class and work schedule
I was unable to make it to the gym
everyday like planned.
Therefore, I wasn’t always able to
do my stretches twice a day like
planned.
6. Results!
I still have 2 weeks left until I go to the
Doctor to see my full progress but as of
now I have full motion in my knee. I don’t
have the strength I would like to have but
that is going to take more time build. I
can run a few feet before getting sore.
Sitting on my knees is no longer a
problem. So over all I am happy with the
results. I’m excited to see what the
doctor says in a two weeks.
