How to ask better questions and how to assess UX using surveys.
This workshop at UXLX 2014 in Lisbon was a deep dive into two important topics in survey design for user research.
We used the four-step model of how people answer questions to work on better questions, then we focused on two special uses of questionnaires in user research: the post-test assessment of satisfaction, and then how to gather information from users for redesign.
Thanks to all the attendees for making this workshop a lot of fun.

The document discusses different types of software testing:
- Development testing includes unit, component, and system testing to discover bugs during development. Unit testing involves testing individual program units in isolation.
- Release testing is done by a separate team to test a complete version before public release.
- User testing involves potential users testing the system in their own environment.
The goals of testing are to demonstrate that software meets requirements and to discover incorrect or undesirable behavior to find defects. Different testing types include validation testing to check correct functionality and defect testing to uncover bugs. Both inspections and testing are important and complementary methods in software verification.

This document summarizes a graduation thesis presentation about the efficacy of technical illustrations in a technical communication environment. The presentation studied how to most effectively design body and object positions in user manuals for second language speakers using a minimal text approach. It analyzed user accuracy ratings of images showing different bat positions, angles, and heights. The results showed higher accuracy for canonical three-quarter views. While preliminary results supported some viewpoints over others, the data was inconclusive. Future work could analyze additional actions and postures to provide clearer guidance on effective illustration design.

OWLED2009: A platform for distributing and reasoning with OWL-EL knowledge ba...Michel Dumontier
This document proposes a peer-to-peer platform for distributed reasoning with OWL-EL knowledge bases. It describes distributing the knowledge base across peers using a hash table, with each peer responsible for concepts, axioms, and individuals mapped to it. It discusses how concept satisfiability can be checked in a distributed manner by unfolding concepts and checking satisfiability locally. It notes challenges in fully supporting nominals and the need for peers to exchange information.
The document discusses going the extra mile in web design. It argues that designers should go beyond the minimum requirements by adding extra details, experimenting with new technologies, and customizing aspects like fonts. Going the extra mile will make designers' work stand out, get them noticed, lead to more opportunities, and make clients happy. To do this, designers need to continuously learn, stay up to date on new developments, and find ways to experiment in their free time despite constraints like deadlines and budgets. The conclusion emphasizes that going the extra mile can make a difference and help designers do truly awesome work.
Tailings systems in mines are often the object of Risk Assessments. Unfortunately common practices in Risk Assessment, using PIGs (Probability Impact Graphs) are arbitrary, lead to confusing and fuzzy results, offer very little decision making support and misrepresent reality. After demonstrating these pitfalls, the presentation shows how to do better by using ORE (Optimum Risk Estimates), a methodology developed by Riskope.
Riskope has developed a proprietary application that allows to package ORE results into cockpits addressing top and mid-management concerns, allowing strategic integration of risks in corporate policies.
The study found that leading health care sites have opportunities to improve the online user experience for researching and obtaining Medicare supplemental insurance quotes. Blue Cross Blue Shield had the highest overall satisfaction rates and usability scores, while all sites had room for improvement. Specifically, over 40% of users reported frustrations with the research task across all sites, mainly due to confusing terminology and lengthy processes. Similarly, over 55% reported issues with the quote task, especially with locating rate information and understanding coverage options. The study provided recommendations to enhance the online experience.

Evaluation of ontology-powered scientific research as a means to assess and i...Michel Dumontier
Ontologies are quickly becoming a core part of biomedical infrastructure, where they serve as a means to standardize terminology, to enable access to domain knowledge, to verify data consistency and to facilitate integrative analyses over heterogeneous biomedical data. Given the increased use of ontologies in scientific research, we must first consider the consistent evaluation of ontology-powered research so as to quantitatively evaluate the contribution of the ontology to the effort. Quantitative evaluation of research could then lead to systematic improvement of the application and performance of an ontology (as a key measures of quality) and enable the comparison of any ontology to the overall result. With the emergence of vast amounts of relatively schema-light biomedical Linked Open Data such as that provided by the open source Bio2RDF project, new opportunities arise for applying, evaluating and increasing the utility of ontologies in biomedical research.
Harmony 2011: Formalization of SBML models as OWL ontologiesMichel Dumontier
Formalizing Systems Biology Models with Biomedical Ontologies aims to create sophisticated ontologies from systems biology models represented using the Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML). The approach distinguishes model components from the real-world entities they represent using an upper level ontology. Model annotations are converted into ontology axioms, asserting subclass relationships. Additional constraints are imposed through relations between concepts, allowing inconsistencies to be detected when relations are incorrectly used.

The webinar provides strategies for making UX a strategic differentiator.
Digital advertising is becoming less effective as click-through rates decline. Only a small portion of internet users, around 8%, account for the majority of clicks on display ads. Additionally, heavy clickers are not representative of the overall online population in terms of their internet usage. However, digital advertising can still be effective for branding when measured by lift in awareness, purchase intent, favorability, and other metrics. It is also comparable to TV advertising in terms of driving sales, when accounting for frequency of exposure. The future of digital advertising effectiveness lies in more relevant metrics beyond clicks and the use of rich media formats with fewer ads to improve the user experience.
This document provides an overview of digital advertising effectiveness from comScore. It summarizes that click-through rates on banner ads are very small and shrinking over time. It also notes that heavy clickers, who drive the majority of clicks, are not representative of the overall internet population. However, the document establishes that digital advertising can be effective for branding when measured by lift in awareness, purchase intent, favorability, and sales. It suggests moving to more relevant metrics beyond clicks and explores solutions like post-buy analysis, understanding attitudinal changes, and measuring behavioral effects.

What We Thought We Knew About Automotive Internet Shoppers Digital Dealer 10 ...Naked Lime Marketing
This document summarizes research on 6 million online automotive shoppers. It finds that 64.8% start their search on Google, with dealer name being the most common search term at 63%. 70% of traffic to dealership sites is from Google. While 78% of shoppers research online, dealers are only found for 37% of searches. It recommends optimizing search engine optimization, pay-per-click ads, and listings to reach more online shoppers. Analysis of dealer sites finds high bounce rates, especially from the home page. Third party sites convert leads better than dealer or OEM sites. The conclusions recommend addressing these issues to improve online marketing and sales.
Using technology to create additional salesRalph Paglia
This document discusses how technology can help car dealerships improve their follow up processes and customer relationships. It notes that most car buyers now research online but many leads go unanswered. The top priority for dealerships in an economic downturn is improving follow up and converting leads to sales. Fast response to online leads is critical as many buyers will go elsewhere if not contacted quickly. Lead notification programs that instantly alert dealers to new online leads enable the lightning-fast response that customers now expect.
This document discusses how technology can help car dealerships improve customer follow up and relationship building. It notes that effective follow up processes are especially important during economic downturns. The document highlights that consumers expect fast responses to their queries but dealers often do not respond quickly enough. It then discusses how lead notification programs can help dealers instantly contact consumers and improve response times, leading to higher sales and customer satisfaction.

Com score vce brandingmetrics vn-2012-11-02Duong The Vinh
The document discusses the results of a study analyzing the delivery of digital advertising campaigns across Asia. Some key findings include:
- On average, 58% of ads across all campaigns were viewable, lower than rates found in other regions.
- Viewability varied significantly by content category and ad size/placement.
- 4% of ads were delivered outside the targeted geographic regions, with the U.S. receiving nearly a third of those impressions.
- While overall brand safety issues were low, even one exposure to undesirable content can damage a brand.
The document discusses improving car sales closing ratios through faster response times and long-term follow up. It finds that 67.5% of new vehicle buyers use the internet for research, and response time within 3 days has increased from 80% in 2003 to 86% in 2007. However, 80% of car shoppers never get a response. The document recommends solutions like instant messaging, wireless paging, rapid response, broadcast emails, newsletters, CRM automation and email managers to boost closing ratios through better communication and long-term follow up. A dealer testimonial finds rapid response led to immediate 300% improvement in closing ratios and sales.

Hold on to Your Hats: The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Might Actually Be a G...UserZoom
This document summarizes a presentation about how the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) can be beneficial for design teams if implemented properly. The presenters discuss common myths about SAFe, such as the ideas that it is not agile, that design only happens on demand, and that it treats work as an assembly line. However, SAFe can help if teams focus on lean, agile principles like iterative design, collaborative cross-functional teams, and making work meaningful. Design is an integral part of the solution-making process rather than a separate phase. With the right attitudes and staffing, SAFe can provide benefits while respecting design's differences.

39. Experimental Study
• How difficult is this task across a number of websites?
– Across all the websites we looked at, there were low completion rates, proving
that across platforms, it is a difficult task
• Edmunds everyone gets distracted by the Price Quote pop-ups and pages
• KBB, Cars.com and Autotrader do not let you select the car from the calculator
• Toyota has a lot of graphics, but is hard to navigate through
• How much of the difficulty is finding the right car?
– The two step process of finding the right car and then finding the calculator adds to the difficulty of
the task. On the websites that are more geared towards car inventory instead of research, finding
the basic price of the car to input into the calculator is difficult
• How much is it the interaction with the payment calculator?
– It is less the interaction with inputting figures into the calculator that is difficult, instead it is when
you cannot choose a car FROM the calculator that makes this step of the task difficult.
– Due to the artificiality of the task, uses have ore trouble entering in the correct figures than if they
were doing this on their own. A small typo or mistake would look like a task failure
• How much is it the problem with the task design?
– More just the artificiality of if you were going to search for a car, you would not be changing things
like your zip code or your sales tax
• Is there a mismatch with the users mental model?
