What is Learn Together?
❖ This is a kit created to help chapter leaders develop
innovative technology programs for their members.!
❖ With ideas and examples for technology programming
along with ways to promote it, chapter leaders can gain
the inspiration they need to develop the programs their
members need to stay ahead of the curve. !
❖ In addition, chapter leaders are encouraged to develop
partnerships with SLA HQ, the IT Division and others to
expand access and increase the impact of the program.
Programming for Your Chapter
Program Ideas
❖ Extensions and apps for your browser!
❖ Security for your phone!
❖ Storytelling with social media!
❖ Apps for the busy professional!
❖ Free tools for collaboration
Learning
❖ Think about what kind of learning experience you want to
provide. Will this session be limited to on-site participants
or will you deliver this as an online learning experience?!
❖ Figure out the learning outcomes and the lessons you want
participants to walk away with. Are there any resources
that participants should access prior to the session?!
❖ Think about the skills participants should already have in
order to get the most out of the learning experience. Make
sure to list this information in the session information.
Participation
Options for Online or On-Site
❖ If you are interested in presenting the session as an online learning
opportunity, think about making use of free tools like Google
Hangouts on Air. You can record a session and post it to your
YouTube account. !
❖ You may also want to post the presentation to SlideShare and use a
teleconference line to connect with learners. The presenter can call
out the slide number during the call to ensure that attendees are on
the right slide. This was used successfully during this presentation. !
❖ In order to increase participation in an on-site learning event, think
about adding a teleconference option to increase participation. Free
teleconferencing options are available.
Registration
❖ If the event is free, think about Google Forms to make the
registration form. If you are planning to charge for the event,
check out Eventbrite. !
❖ Keep in mind that about 50% of those that register may not
attend the event. Make sure to send out a reminder email to
increase participation. Include a note in the registration form
that lets registrants know that they should expect to receive a
reminder email.!
❖ Provide an option for registrants to pose questions before the
event. This can help you better shape the session.
Promotion
Event PR
❖ Use your social media channels to promote the event.
Send out a PR kit to your member discussion list to
provide sample tweets, LinkedIn and Facebook postings
that members can easily share with their own network. !
❖ Think about posting an announcement on your chapter’s
site 6-8 weeks before the event. Include an
announcement in your chapter’s bulletin as well. !
❖ During chapter meetings, provide attendees with
advance notice about planned events.
Partnerships
❖ Partner with SLA HQ (@SLAhq) and the SLA IT (@slait)
Division to promote your session. See if you can get
your event posted to the SLA calendar.!
❖ Connect with your student chapter leadership to get the
message out to students who may be interested in
attending.!
❖ Might there be professionals from other associations
who might be interested in attending? Can you develop
a partnership to promote learning opportunities?
Post-Event Survey
Survey
❖ Include a survey in the reminder email sent a day or two to
registrants before the event. Google Forms is a free option to
consider. Think about including:!
❖ A question that asks attendees to share information about
what days and times work best for them to participate.!
❖ Ask how the learning experience can be improved.!
❖ Ask attendees to suggest future topics and speakers.!
❖ Remind attendees during the session to fill out the survey.
