Twitter is a social media platform that allows users to share short messages called tweets. To set up an account, a user enters their name, username, password and email. Account settings allow users to customize their profile, privacy settings, notifications and design preferences. Users can follow other accounts and see their tweets, and can also retweet tweets from accounts they follow to share with their own followers.

3. What is Twitter? Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages. People write short updates, often called "tweets" of 140 characters or fewer. These messages are posted to your profile or your blog, sent to your followers, and are searchable on Twitter search. 4. Setting up an account In the full name box, enter your first and last name. Within the username box, come up with a unique twitter name – you will receive a message if the name you select is unavailable. Create a password, enter your email, agree to the terms of service and click on create my account . Guevara

5. Settings - Account From the account settings, you can change your basic account information. You can choose to add a location to your tweets (party, neighborhood, town information). You can also choose to protect your tweets – allow only those you approve to follow your tweets. Guevara

6. Settings – Password If you would like to change your Twitter password, select the password tab at the top of the page. It is a good idea to create a strong password and change it on occasion. Guevara

7. Settings - Mobile You can set up your mobile phone to send tweets. While Twitter doesn’t charge for this service, standard message/data rates may apply. You can also set your mobile to receive updates on those accounts you currently follow. Guevara

8. Settings - Notices From the notices tab, you can decide to get email notification when: Someone decides to follow your Twitter account. When you receive a new direct message. Receive an email newsletter. Guevara

9. Settings - Profile You can add a picture to your profile, add a bio, add a website/blog and enter your location information. Guevara

10. Settings - Design In the settings tab, you can choose to make use of a pre-designed theme. You can also choose to change the background image and design colors to customize the themes provided. Guevara

11. Settings - Connections You can decide to allow outside applications to access your Twitter account. For example, I have decided to tweet the updates I create in LinkedIn. I also decided to link my Yelp account to my Twitter account to update my followers when I have added a review. Guevara

12. Following Others can choose to follow your Twitter account and you can choose to follow others. People may choose to follow you as they may know you personally or are interested in what you have to say. Guevara

13. How to follow Once you happen on someone whose tweets you would like to follow, you can follow their tweets in 2 ways: Click on the follow icon at the top left of the page. Click on the gear icon and click on the follow option. Guevara

14. How to Tweet You have up to 140 characters to create a tweet. At the top right of the tweet box, you’ll see how many characters you have left to use. Once finished, click on Tweet . Choose to reply to others tweets by adding @ username . Delete a tweet by rolling over the right hand side of the tweet and clicking the trash icon that appears. Guevara

15. Retweeting If you come across another tweet that you think is newsworthy or may be of interest to your own followers, roll over the tweet you would like to share and click on the retweet option. Click yes on the question - retweet to your followers? Guevara
