The objective of this advanced design project is to obtain an optimal setting of turning parameters (Cutting speed, Feed and Depth of Cut), which results in an optimal value of material removal rate (MRR) while machining a cylindrical bar made of mild steel. In our study, an attempt has been made to generate a model to predict material removal rate using Regression Technique. Also an attempt has been made to optimize the process parameters using Taguchi Technique. A three level orthogonal array L9 was selected to satisfy the minimum number of experiment conditions for the factors and levels presented in this project.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

Cutting Parameters
The cutting parameters for any cutting process
are:

Feed
Depth of Cut.
The selection of cutting parameters depends on:
The tool and work-piece materials

Machining operation
Degree of finishing

Cutting parameters
• The primary motion is the main motion
provided by a machine tool or manually to
cause relative motion between the tool and
work-piece so that the face of the tool
approaches the work-piece material.
• Cutting speed is the instantaneous
velocity of the primary motion of the selected
point on the cutting edge relative to the work-
piece.

Cutting parameters
• The feed motion (often referred to as the feed
rate) is a motion provided by a machine tool or
manually to cause the additional relative
motion between the tool and the work-piece, which,
when added to the primary motion, leads to
repeated or continuous chip removal and thus
creation of a machined surface with the desired
geometric characteristics.
• The resultant cutting motion is the motion
resulting from simultaneously applying the
primary and feed motions.

Single point tool
• Single point tools are cutting tools having
one cutting part (or chip producing element)
and one shank.
• They are commonly used in lathes, turret
lathes, planers, shapers, boring mills, and
similar machine tools.
• the feed motion setting on the lathe is the
distance moved by the tool during each
revolution of the work-piece.

Work surfaces
The work-piece has three important surfaces:
1- The work surface, the surface on the
work-piece to be removed by machining
2- the machined surface, the desired
surface produced by the action of the cutting
tool
3- The transient surface, the part of the
surface formed on the work-piece by the
cutting edge and removed during the
following revolution of the tool or work-piece.
