The Objective of this work is to design a device using IRFZ44N MOSFET in Proteus
software that allows one to rapidly heat a metal object by subjecting it to an alternating
electromagnetic field, without the need for fossil fuels.
OBJECTIVE
INTRODUCTION
 Induction heater is a key piece of equipment in all forms of induction
heating.
 Induction heating is a flame-free, fast, clean, energy-efficient and non-
polluting method of heating metals and conductive materials.
 It is the method of raising the temperature of an electrically conductive
material by subjecting it to an alternating electromagnetic field.
 The important feature of Induction heater is that the heat is generated inside
the object itself, instead of by an external heat source via heat conduction.
 It is mainly used in many industrial process, such as heat treatment in
metallurgy. It is also used in induction cooktops for heat containers of food
which is called induction cooking
COMPONENTS USED:
IRFZ44N MOSFET
IRFZ44N is an N-channel MOSFET, so the Drain and Source pins will be left open when there is no voltage applied to the gate pin.
... If it is required to be switched with Arduino, then a simple drive circuit using a transistor will work to provide the required gate
voltage to trigger the MOSFET to open fully.
1N4001 diode
The 1N4001 diode belongs to the family of the 1N400x diode series, which are most commonly used in household electronic
appliances. It allows the flow of current only in one direction, that is from anode terminal to cathode terminal just like a normal
diode.
CAPACITOR
Capacitor is a device for storing electrical energy, consisting of two conductors in close proximity and insulated from each other
RESISTOR
A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical resistance as a circuit element. In electronic
circuits, resistors are used to reduce current flow, adjust signal levels, to divide voltages, bias active elements, and terminate
transmission lines, among other uses.
AIR FILLED INDUCTOR
An inductor, also called a coil, choke, or reactor, is a passive two-terminal electrical component that stores energy in a magnetic field
when electric current flows through it
IRON CORE INDUCTOR
It is also called a magnetic core or magnetic core,. It is a component for producing inductance, a property that has electrical circuits or
components such as coils. It is therefore also used in transformers
SWITCH
Switch is an electrical component that can disconnect or connect the conducting path in an electrical circuit, interrupting the
electric current or diverting it from one conductor to another.
OSCILLOSCOPE
Oscilloscopes is a device used to test and display voltage signals as waveforms, visual representations of the variation of voltage
over time. The signals are plotted on a graph, which shows how the signal changes.
BLOCK DIAGRAM
WORKING PRINCIPLE
 An induction heater consists of an electromagnet and an electronic oscillator that
passes a high-frequency alternating current (AC) through the electromagnet.
 The rapidly alternating magnetic field penetrates the object, generating electric
currents inside the conductor, called eddy currents.
 The eddy currents flow through the resistance of the material, and heat it by Joule
heating. In ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic materials, such as iron, heat also is
generated by magnetic hysteresis losses.
 The frequency of the electric current used for induction heating depends on the object
size, material type, coupling (between the work coil and the object to be heated) and
the penetration depth.
SCHEMATIC DESIGN OF THE CIRCUIT
SIMULATED OUTPUT
APPLICATIONS
 Induction Cooking
 Plastic processing
 Induction welding
 Induction furnace
 Induction sealing
ADVANTAGES
 Localized areas can be heat treated.
 Very short surface heat-up times.
 Low operating costs.
 Steel can be pre-heat treated to obtain prior core hardness values.
 Straightening can be carried out on a deformed bar/shaft.
 Only certain steels can be induction hardened.
 The method is restricted to components having a shape that is suitable for induction hardening.
 Induction hardening can also produce hot spots at specific features like keyways, grooves, cross holes
and threads.
DISADVANTAGES
DEFINITION OF TERMS:
Induction heating
 It is the process of heating electrically conductive materials like metals by electromagnetic induction, through heat
transfer passing through an induction coil that creates an electromagnetic field within the coil to melt down steel,
copper, brass, graphite, gold, silver, aluminum, and carbide.
Hysteresis
 It is the dependence of the state of a system on its history.
 For example, a magnet may have more than one possible magnetic moment in a given magnetic field, depending
on how the field changed in the past
Eddy currents
 They are loops of electrical current induced within conductors by a changing magnetic field in the conductor
according to Faraday's law of induction.
 Eddy currents flow in closed loops within conductors, in planes perpendicular to the magnetic field
CONCLUSION
The main benefit of using an induction heater is especially in hot forging, hardening, pipes coating, the
fusion of precious metals which led the entire market to prefer this type of technology for the thermal
increase of the workpieces.
