It simply meant that,
simplify the complex
calculation.
MEANING OF SIMPLIFICATION
I. REPLACE “OF” BY MULTIPLICATION
(×)
The first rule of simplification is
convert (or replace) the “of” sign
into multiplication (×).
Ex. – Find 8 of 5
Sol. 8 × 5 = 40
The second rule of simplification is
convert (or replace) the “/” sign
into division (÷).
Ex. Find 12/3
Sol. 12 ÷ 3 = 4
II. REPLACE “/” BY DIVISION (÷)
 V – VINCULUM OR BAR ( )
 B – BRACKET {}
 O – OF (×)
 D – DIVISION (÷)
 M – MULTIPLICATION (×)
 A – ADDITION (+)
 S- SUBSTRACTION (-)
III. ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND THE
VBODMAS RULE
EX. SIMPLIFY 5 ÷ 20 + 3 × 2 of 4 – (15 ÷ 7 - 2 )
Sol.
• First solve vinculum = 5 ÷ 20 + 3 × 2 of 4 – (15 ÷ 5)
• Then bracket = 5 ÷ 20 + 3 × 2 of 4 – 3
• Then “OF” = 5 ÷ 20 + 3 × 2 × 4 – 3
= 5 ÷ 20 + 3 × 8 – 3
• Then division (÷) = 4 + 3 × 8 – 3
• Then multiplication(×) = 4 + 24 – 3
• Then add = 28 – 3
• Then subtract = 25
IV. MULTIPLICATION & DIVISION HAVE THE
SAME PRIORITY BUT SOMETIMES DO OPERATION
FIRST WHICH IS ON LEFT
Though in VBODMAS rule, division solve before
multiplication but sometimes we can perform any of two
operation first which is on left.
Ex. Find 8 x 6 / 4
Sol.
First solve multiplication because it is on left
= 8 x 6 / 4
= 48 / 4
Then divide
= 12
V. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION HAVE THE SAME
PRIORITY BUT SOMETIMES DO OPERATION FIRST
WHICH IS ON LEFT
Though in VBODMAS rule, addition before subtraction
but sometimes we can perform any of two operation first
which is on left.
Ex. Find 20 – 10 + 15
Sol.
First subtract because it is on left
= 20 – 10 + 15
= 10 + 15
Then add
= 25
Most of the time the number are given in
decimal form then round off them into
nearest integer .
Ex. (32.4 x 49.9)
Sol. Round off the value
= 32 x 50
= 1600
VI. SOMETIMES ROUND OFF THE NUMBER
WHICH IS IN DECIMAL TO THE NEAREST
INTEGER
