BODMAS rule ‘ BODMAS’ rule : This rule depicts the correct sequence in which the operations are to be executed, so as to find out the value of a given expression. Here, ‘B’ stands for ‘Bracket’, ‘ O’ for ‘of’, ‘ D’ for ‘Division, ‘ M’ for ‘Multiplication’, ‘ A’ for ‘Addition’, ‘ S’ for ‘Subtraction’.
Virnaculam(or Bar) When an expression contains Virnaculam, before applying the ‘BODMAS’ rule, we simplify the expression under the virnaculam.
The next step is to evaluate all the expressions in the brackets. After removing the brackets, we must use the following operations strictly in the following order: 1. of 2. Division, Multiplication 3.Addtition, Subtraction
So, the order of precedence is: V Virnaculam first B B rackets O Of, O rders (i.e. Powers and Square Roots, etc.) DM D ivision and M ultiplication (left-to-right) AS A ddition and S ubtraction (left-to-right)
Evaluate the following expressions. 1 + 2 * 3 = (1 + 2) * 3 = 4 * 9 – 8 / 2 = 4 * (9 – 8) / 2 = 9 2 – 1 = 9 / ( 5 – 2) = 7. 9 / ( 5 – 2) *5 = 8. 9 /( ( 5 – 2) *5) =
9. 48 / 2 2 * 6 = 10. 48 / (2 2 * 6) = 11. { 20 + log(100) } / (2 + 3) = 12. 20 + log(100) / (2 + 3) = 13. 20 + log(100) / 2 + 3 = 14. 4.2 + 6.4 x 8 = 18 – 7 x 2 15. 3.8² + 6 = 5²
Answers: 1 + 2 * 3 = 7 (1 + 2) * 3 = 9 4 * 9 – 8 / 2 = 32 4 * (9 – 8) / 2 = 2 9 2 – 1 = 80 9 / ( 5 – 2) = 3 7. 9 / ( 5 – 2) *5 = 15 8. 9 /( ( 5 – 2) *5) = 3/5
9. 48 / 2 2 * 6 = 72 10. 48 / (2 2 * 6) = 2 11. { 20 + log(10 10 ) } / (2 + 3) = 6 12. 20 + log(10 10 ) / (2 + 3) = 22 13. 20 + log(10 10 ) / 2 + 3 = 28 14. 4.2 + 6.4 x 8 = 13.85 18 – 7 x 2 15. 3.8² + 6 = 0.8176 5²
