Examples Of Greed In Mcteague
Written in 1899, Frank Norris novel, McTeague serves as a view of societal factions of his time
period. Norris illustrates the stratification of society in this San Francisco community by using the
concept of Social Darwinism. He gives detailed accounts of the inner workings of society along with
the emotions of the time. Through his characters, Norris shows the separation of classes and the greed
that grew abundantly during the late 19th century. He also gives a grim picture of survival in his
depiction of the theory of natural selection.
In the first chapter, Norris paints a picture of a town setting. He describes Polk Street as
one of those cross streets peculiar to Western cities, situated in the heart of the residence quarter, ...

These people are separated by their occupation, which also determines their activity on Polk Street. In
noticing this activity, one can see the distinct lines drawn between the workers and the wealthy.
Also, in this story of greed and deception told, the reader can see the underlying greed of the working
class. The characters of Maria Macapa and Zerkow ooze greed from every pore. At the beginning of
the novel, Maria can be found going through the tenant s apartments for junk to turn in to Zerkow for
payment. Once there, she delights in telling the story of her family s former fortune concentrating on a
gold plate, for which Zerkow drools over the mere thought of. It is in this scene that the reader also
learns of the obsession

Bondocks And Black Dynamite Analysis
Racism is still an issue in the United States of America. Many authors of satirical cartoons such as The
Boondocks and Black Dynamite have emphasized these events in a satirical manner to try to get the
American public involved and stop the racial oppression that is occurring. However, many audience
members do not take these types of shows seriously and view them as a joke rather than a serious
topic. As the majority of audience members not taking satirical shows such as The Boondocks and
Black Dynamite seriously has led to the support of racism instead of the abolishment of it. Cartoons
such as The Boondocks and Black Dynamite highlight racial beliefs and pokes fun at the ignorance
behind them. For instance, a scene from The Boondocks depicts ... Show more content on

This misinterpretation is due to audience members coming from different cultural backgrounds
resulting in many viewers finding some parts of the show humorous while others find it offensive
(Habib, 2008). The cultural backgrounds that the audience members come from may also affect as to
how much they know about other cultures and not just their own. This is what many African American
people fear when shows such as The Boondocks and Black Dynamite are aired on television since the
cartoons might give a negative representation of the African American community and reinforce
stereotypes (Rockler, 2002 p. 409). Instances of these misinterpretations can be found throughout
multiple episodes of The Boondocks and Black Dynamite. For instance, in The Boondocks episode,
Granddad s Fight, written by Aaron McGruder and Rodney Barnes the theme of the episode was that
nigga moments end badly. Throughout the episode Robert J. Freeman prepares to fight Colonel H.
Stinkmeaner, a blind old man, since Stinkmeaner made Robert look like a fool by beating him up in a
parking lot. Huey, Robert s grandson, trains Robert since Huey believes that Stinkmeaner is a blind
swordsman, but in the end, Huey realizes he was wrong. However, Huey was too late and was unable
to talk his granddad, Robert, out of fighting Stinkmeaner resulting in Stinkmeaner s death, which leads
to the overall theme that nigga moments end badly (2005). The overall message that McGruder and
Barnes were trying to make in this episode is that the African American community needs to stop
living up to their stereotypes and realize the way they represent their culture when they perform these
actions. Throughout this episode, there are multiple scenes of the authors purpose such as Huey
continuously trying to convince his grandfather, Robert, from going

Osmosis In Potato Cells
The hypothesis tested was as the concentration of the sodium chloride solution increases, the change
in mass of the potato cylinders will decrease, from gaining to losing mass, allowing the isotonic point
of the potato cells to be found which was supported by both the group and class results. These results
showed that increasing the sodium chloride solution concentration allowed it to approach the isotonic
point and then surpass it when the solution became hypertonic and the net movement of water was out
of the potato cells.
The graph is indicative of when the potato was in a hypotonic solution (above the x axis) there was a
net movement of water into the potato cell resulting in an increase in mass. The opposite is true of
hypertonic solutions (below the x axis) resulting in a decrease in mass. Where the graph crossed the x
axis is where the potato cells isotonic point is, this is where the external solution has the same
concentrations as the internal cell cytoplasm
Osmosis is a process by which water moves through a partially permeable membrane down a
concentration gradient. As this net movement of water occurs from high to low concentrations it is a
passive process and therefore does not require energy to occur. There are three types of solutions that a
cell can be in, in relation to which direction osmosis will occur. In hypertonic solutions, there is a
higher osmotic concentration than in the cell s cytoplasm, so plasmolysis occurs. This is where water
moves out

Overview of African-American Culture
Being a resident of South Carolina, African American Culture was chosen as part of the applied
learning project for the Intercultural Nursing class, because African Americans make up more than a
quarter of this state s population. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, the total
population for South Carolina (S.C.) is 4,625,364, with 27.9% being of African American descent. The
purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding and sensitivity to issues and cultural variances or
phenomena that are unique to the African American Culture. Another goal is to identify nursing
interventions that are important for the nurse to consider in caring for this population. These
phenomena s include variances in social organization, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No other culture was segregated or forced against their will to immigrate to the United States. Though
the nurse cannot amend the past, one must realize that trust must be built in order to effectively care
for the African American patient. It is also important for the nurse to avoid stereotyping the patient
based on race or ethnicity. (Giger, 2013) During the interview, it became apparent to the interviewer
that Sinkler family may not be the stereotypical African American. Education and integration was
important in order to prosper in the American society and culture. Both of Andrea s parents were
college educated, her father worked as a warehouse manager and her mother was an engineer. Andrea

eventually obtaining a Master s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. She now works for Vocation

the stereotypical black dialect. (Sinkler, 2014) Communication is the way one exchanges information

American Air Flight 11 Essay
Fourteen years has passed since that fateful attack on the United States where multiple terrorist
commandeered commercial aircrafts and crashed them into the World Trade Center buildings and the
Pentagon. Mohammed Atta and his accomplices hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, crashing the
aircraft into the North Tower whilst a few minutes later, their associate, Marwan al Shehhi and other
accomplices crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower. Both of these individuals
obtained and received their pilot s licenses at Huffman Aviation in Florida by training on large jet
flight simulators. A fellow terrorist, Ziad Jarrah, who crashed United Airlines Flight 93 before his
intended target, believed to be The White House, also acquired his pilot training at Florida. However,

Although these individuals trained and acquired their licenses and certificates at general aviation flight
school within the United States, the use of these aircraft as weapons of mass destruction showed that
there was a massive gap in our nation s National security. The reason for this is the fact that all these
individuals were from foreign countries and they were able to get their pilot licenses meant that there
was a weak United States general aviation security program, especially when they trained pilots from
foreign countries. Since those event that unfold that tragic day of September 11th, major
enhancements and changes has taken place towards commercial aviation, on the contrary, general
aviation training has not been given this attention. This further increases the risk for terrorist groups to

Hegemonic Masculinity Summary
R.W. Connell s (1995) concept of hegemonic masculinity is the most significant theoretical device for
understanding the masculinity hierarchy. Demetriou (2001) states how hegemonic masculinity
expresses two different social practices, from a social constructivist view. The first is that men benefit
from the patriarchal system of society. The second process is that there is an intramasculine hierarchy
by which the social order of men is created and maintained. Connell (1995) argues that this is the
reason for the societal gender order where not only do men uphold power over women, but also
certain men are dominant over other men. Demetriou (2001) criticises Connell s term of hegemonic
masculinity for being too broad, as the main focus is usually placed on the intramasculine process. He
therefore believes this process to be internal hegemony (ibid).
In terms of the intramasculine order , Connell argues that there is a specific type of masculinity that is
revered the most and holds dominance over all other. Men who most closely exemplify this archetype
are considered to hold the most social capital. In this model Connell states that gay men are at the
bottom of the order and straight men that embody certain characteristics sit atop the hierarchy. Connell
s model furthers Brannon s (1976) work. In this he suggests four rules by which men should follow.
Hence, in Connell s (1995) model homophobia is a significant factor in sitting at the top of the
hierarchy and

Black Masculinity And The Hip Hop Culture
In the predominantly patriarchal history of the world masculinity and what it means to be a man have
differed from culture to culture. When it comes to African American history and culture, particularly
what it has meant to be a man has no clear set of universal rules or guidelines. There are a few
different sources such as hip hop and television many young black men across America draw their
sense of masculinity from. On the other hand, there are role models in black communities that many
young black men also draw their sense of masculinity from. With so many different sources to draw a
sense of what it means to be a black man in today s society from what is the true definition of black
masculinity. In black media today the hip hop culture is often referred to when defining what it means
to be a black person in society. In particular the hip hop culture is where many young black men pull
both positive and negative aspects of black masculinity. Many mainstream hip hop songs often create
a common misogyny by objectifying and stereotyping women. An example of this can be heard in the
song Nasty Girl by The Notorious B.I.G. where he states: Conversate. Sex on the first date. I state,
You know what you do to me? She starts off, Well I don t usually. Then I, whip it out, rubber no doubt.

Stereotypes Of Dumb Blonde
What does a blonde do when her laptop computer freezes? She sticks it in the microwave. We have all
heard the dumb blonde jokes that are now the vast majority of jokes told. Media has branded the
blonde as what the world knows to be the archetype of the dumb girl. Today a member of society is
judged on his/her looks, personality, and money. However, no matter how smart, poor, or passionate
one is, as a blonde, one is automatically stereotyped. The stereotype points to a human being that is
dumb, pretty, rich, and stuck up. This paper will discuss how the stereotype is used, to received, and
branded.
Media may have branded the blonde stereotype, but recently media has been debunking it over the

The dumb blonde is a popular culture stereotype often applied to women with blonde hair. Now the
blonde has been branded by the dumb blonde impression. In the article No Logo by Naomi Klein it is
stated that the brand is not a reflection of quality but a reflection of what the marketing department
wants it to stand for (Klein, 3). For example the everyday blonde symbols a dingy and arrogant but
attractive and popular woman. This is an identity that people have adapted in to their lifestyles. A few
years ago society seen the brainless blonde everywhere partly due to the marketing corporation
because it a part of advertisement that fits a particular style of people.
From the movie Legally Blonde to the hit television show The vampire Dairies the dumb blonde
stereotype is beginning to change. Blondes are not really that dumb. For instance Legally Blonde
shows a woman going through law school and winning her case. Media may have created the dumb
blonde stereotype but with the new movies it is starting to debunk the whole idea now. Media has

What Is Statistics
Statistics can be defined as the science that deals with the collection, classification, analysis, and
interpretation of numerical facts of data, and that, by use of mathematical theories of probability,
imposes order and regularity on aggregates of more or less disparate elements (Dictionary.com, LLC,
2008). Yet how do we use these specific elements in our everyday working lives? Many don t realize
the extent to which we as a culture base our decisions on statistics. We us them in something as small
as predicting the outcome of a game or number of points that a team will score. Statistics surrounds us
in many ways and in many forms. As the American Statistical Association president Jon Kettenring
stated, I like to think of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet when it came closer and more information was pulled they realized that this statistical information
was indeed inaccurate and did not provide enough data to see the true statistics on Clemens. They
noted that to be accurate they needed to look at all of the athletes that have as successful as Clemens
not just in the same age bracket. When looking at this particular information they noted that indeed
Clemens was irregular and did not fit the mold of the normal athlete not using performance enhancing
drugs. This shows that with inaccurate and inadequate information that the wrong conclusion can be
made. (Knowledge@Wharton, 2008) Just seeing this information makes you realize the importance of
collecting information for correct statistical analysis. When researching statistics you can also see that
there is much relying on the statistical analysis s that are made. With that we see that we must set
standards for researching and making statistical analyses. First and foremost the information must be
suited to its purpose. Going along with that there are a total of 5 more areas that one must check when
submitting statistical information, info must be as accurate as possible, information must be as fresh as
possible, information must be readily accessible, information must be comparable internationally and
overtime, as well as statistics shall be consistent and as uniform as possible. (Statistics Finland, 2005)

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Wetlands
One resource that can be both classified into two totally different categories make the management of
wetlands more difficult. The public want to protect the wetlands for their valueable functions while
privates want to use the wetlands for their direct economic profits. Kohn (1994) suggested that
policymakers and society need to balance private rights to convert land with public benefits from
keeping wetlands inact by compensating wetland owners or society can regulate conversion of
wetlands. However, the facts that about 82 percent of wetlands are privately owned in US and there is
no clear agreement between private owners and public (Heimlich, et al. 1998) make wetland
protection more complicated and controversy. Valueing wetlands can help visualizing the benefits of
wetlands, however difficult to implement, since values of wetlands are affected by historical events,
technological development and social views. In addition, even when wetlands values are determined,
these values will vary temporaly and spatially, for examples not all wetlands have the flooding
protection values or the recreational values can seasonally change. It is therefore the problem of
institutional arrangement to balance the public benefits (positive externalities of wetlands) and private
interests.

The Good Life Of Andrew Carnegie
Human nature dictates the necessity of being successful and happy, and to find internal contentment,
but what truly defines the good life? Everyone makes decisions about the person they want to be and
what is most important to them: Which do you value more, your wealth or your friendships? Do you
want to be famous or truly loved? Do you care what people think or are you just trying to please
yourself? I think the good life is a combination of everything, and is a fine line that everyone must
walk if they want to be truly content. Some people consider freedom the meaning of the good life.
Thoreau teaches that the good life is freedom from desire. To have a good life people must be free to
make their own choices and mistakes. However, other people have a different opinion about the good
life Andrew Carnegie believes people can find the good life through success and wealth. Yet still,
others want neither of these, choosing instead to stay innocent with no responsibilities like Adam and
Eve, free from decisions and the stresses of everyday life. Another view is Freud s Pleasure Principle
that suggests people are interested only in fun and doing whatever they want all the time. Moreover,
these people don t want to worry about anything else. I believe the definition of a good life can be
described in three simple words, freedom, love, and happiness. Freedom: we should be able to choose
where we live, work and what we do with our lives. Love: everyone should know what it feels

Compare And Contrast The Person Centred Approach
The Person Centred Approach is based on the theory and philosophy of Dr Carl Rogers. It focuses on
the belief that we are all born with an innate ability for psychological growth if external circumstances
allow us to do so. (British Association for the Person Centred Approach. (2017). What Is The Person
Centred Approach. Available: https://www.bapca.org.uk/. Last accessed 5th September 2017.) The
Person Centred Approach describes the client as an expert on themselves, and helps the client gain self
acceptance. The approach believes that humans can self heal, if the core conditions are in place. The
relationship between the client and the counsellor is the most important aspect of the therapy
succeeding. (Rory Lees Oakes. (2017). Counselling Theories Compare and Contrasted. Available:

The, Meridian Hill, And Lynne Rabinowitz
The Civil Rights Movement was a tumultuous era, not only did black activists and leaders fight for
their inalienable rights but there were also many gender, racial and generational conflicts within the
Movement. In the novel Meridian by Alice Walker, the three central characters, Truman Held,
Meridian Hill, and Lynne Rabinowitz are young passionate activists during the Civil Rights
Movement. However, the relationship of genders and the racial and generational dynamics mold and
influence the actions of the characters. In this essay, I will argue that Meridian is forced to constantly
collide and reconcile with past generations, Truman is self conflicted with the idea of abandoning his
African roots, and Lynne is conflicted with the idea of white guilt. Lynne Rabinowitz escapes her
Jewish northern life in order to experience the suffering of the other side in order to satiate her white
guilt and her lack of diversity. She is given a chance to prove herself when she encounters Tommy

How Does Voltaire Portray Women
Laurent Bélanger
Supervisor: Lucy Grove
English Literature
March 2016 How does Voltaire portray women in Candide?
Women in the 18th Century enjoyed very few privileges when it came to their expected gender roles
within society. As he did other aspects of the culture of his time, Voltaire exposes this stark inequality
in the satirical Candide, especially through the lack of many female characters in the novel and his
characterisation of Cunégonde, Paquette and the Old Woman. Their initial lack of complexity and
surprisingly similar lives despite strikingly different origins highlight the coarse existence of women
in the 18th Century. Additionally, Voltaire s portrayal of sexual exploitation as completely habitual
seeks to underline women s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Initially, her noble status wraps her in a sense of grandeur, and yet, by the the novel s second chapter,
she is practically exposed as a typical damsel in distress, fainting at
Candide s expulsion from the Baron s castle, the earliest sign of trouble . Unlike these two characters,
the third significant female figure in Candide the Old Woman is neither pretty, tractable, nor grand. In
fact, she lacks characterisation upon her first appearance, introduced merely as an old woman
(Voltaire, 16), a name she retains until the novel s end. Thus, the novel s three primary female
characters appear, at first, to be little more than archetypal characters, despite their later evolution: the
pretty maid, the damsel in distress and the witch like servant. It is this apparent lack of character
development which illustrates the insignificance of women s roles in 18th Century society.
Regardless of this apparent lack of complexity, Voltaire depicts women in Candide perhaps
surprisingly as survivors, highlighting a crucial aspect of women s existence in the society of the day.
Following the Bulgar attack on the Baron s castle, the raping of Cunégonde
until she could be raped no more and her subsequent disembowel[ment] (Voltaire, 10), the reader
naturally assumes her death; it is therefore a great surprise when she reappears in the novel s seventh
chapter. Similarly, the Old Woman, raped

Romare Bearden’s Collection Essay
Featured and organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Romare Bearden s collection is one that
appreciates and depicts life for what it really is. Bearden did not like abstract expressionism. Instead,
he made many collages depicting life with different perspectives, allowing the viewer to see reality,
but also try to figure out the true meaning that Bearden meant to portray in the collage that was not
directly seen by just looking at the picture. These collages were made by Cut and pasted printed,

He took his imagery from both the everyday rituals of African American rural life in the south and
urban life in the north, melding those American experiences with his personal experiences and with
the themes of classical literature, religion, myth, music and daily human ritual (Ruth Fine).
The exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art featured one of Bearden s best works called
The Block. It is part of a celebration of Bearden s birth. According to the Museum, The Block, an
eighteen foot long collage, celebrates the Harlem neighborhood in New York City that nurtured and
inspired so much of the artist s life and work. Bearden s elaborate and colorful cut paper collages
elevated this genre to a major art form through its unusual materials, expressionist color, abstracted
forms, flattened shapes and spaces, and shifts in perspective and scale all the while maintaining focus

How Does Shakespeare Present Death In Sonnet 73
While talking to Seaton, Macbeth states, My way of life/ Is fall n into the sere, the yellow leaf
(5.3.25). Macbeth acknowledges his aging, but in the rest of the play it is shown that he has no fear
when it comes to death. In fact, when his ineluctable end comes during his epic grapple for power
with Macduff, he keeps battling, even though he knows he will meet his demise. This is a contrast
between the speaker in Sonnet 73 ; this man is perturbed by death, yet he knows the certainty of it,
like Macbeth. By portraying the fears and anxieties of the speaker as he faces his decline, Shakespeare
explores the idea that death will come inevitably, bringing with it sorrow about what has been taken.
He then lessens the harshness of this deterioration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the speaker finishes his point about night consuming the sunset, he states, In me thou see st the
glowing of such fire/ That on the ashes of his youth doth lie (9 10). The fire is a metaphor for his life,
as throughout history flames have been a symbol of life, sustaining people since the dawn of man. The
ashes of his youth are past years, we cremate the dead and turn them into ashes, and his youth is now
the same, gone and past. The fire is [c]onsumed with that which it was nourish d by (12). The fire will
be engulfed in the ashes, like the speaker, who is entangled in the final thoughts of his youth before
death. The speaker has also transitioned from yellow leaves, which come in autumn, to the sunset that
fades in the west, to the glowing of such fire. This reveals the expeditious shortening of time, and the
speaker s realization that death will come more quickly than he thought. He uses a sequence,
beginning in autumn, which takes months to conclude, a sunset, which happens at the end of a day, to
a fire, which takes mere hours to die. The succession of months, days, and hours transmits the idea of
the rapid diminishment of time, and how life passes by in the blink of an eye. This shows that before
our demise, it is facile to get caught up in the memories and rues of our youth, but

California Milestones Essay
California Missions Monuments or Tombstones?
Most Californians are introduced to the California Mission system in one of two ways: in their early
education, or when they first visit a mission. Unfortunately, both methods are prone to simplification
or bias in conveying the history of the missions. What this has led to is Californians who are ignorant
of the history of the land they walk on. Consequently, visitors to the missions treat them as mere
tourist attractions, instead of trying to embrace and understand the complex issues the missions
represent.
The issue was brought sharply into focus for me recently, when I was in the cemetery of Mission
Santa Barbara. It was a sunny afternoon and the tiny graveyard was crowded with ... Show more

Then you construct a model of a mission out of sugar cubes. For most people, this is all they will learn
about the missions unless they visit one.
While each mission is unique, most of what you learn in one is the same. My first visit to a mission
was as a child with my grandmother. We visited San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo and San Juan
Bautista. Both were presented as old churches that the Indians and Mexicans came to practice at and
lived in. I looked through the glass cases and saw the tools and pictures and copies of the Bible. The
placards described what the tools were used for and where the Bibles came from. The drawings
showed Father Serra or the lands as they looked then.
The recent tour I did of the missions showed that things had not changed much. In fact, by the 8th
mission, I was bored by seeing the same tools in the same glass cases, bored and frustrated, because
that was the knowledge most people were content to leave with.
Now I will tell you why we shouldn t settle for artifacts with explanations of their use as the whole
story. California had a population of at least 300,000 Native Americans who spoke at least 100
languages. These people lived on this land for centuries before the Spaniards showed up. Of course,
you would never know that if you only learn from a mission or an elementary school. We are only told
about the California Indians use of tools or baking of adobe

Difference Between Fishbein And Ajzen s Theory Of Behaviour
According to Ajzen s (1991) theory models, behavior is depend to the behavioral intention. There are
three factors which influence the behavioral intention, which are the attitude towards behavior,
subjective norms and perceived behavior control. Attitudes are a complete mental state involving
belief, feelings, values and temperament to act in certain ways. A subjective norm is the sanctions of
certain behavior of one or more individuals about their perception and the extent how the behavior
will mould up the perception. Perceived behavioral control refers to an individual s perception
regarding the extent of control he or she has over a particular behavior. According to Fishbein and
Ajzen (1975), the rating by an individual for an event will be either positive or negative. This
evaluation can affect an individual s attitude. Furthermore, Bobek (1997) expressed that attitude of an
individual, either good or bad, are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Culture has many definitions, and it affects everything people do in their society because of their
ideas, values, attitudes, and normative or expected patterns of behaviour. Culture is not genetically
inherited, and cannot exist on its own, but is always shared by members of a society (Hall 1976, p.
16). Hofstede (1980, pp. 21 23) defines culture as the collective programming of the mind which
distinguishes the members of one group from another , which is passed from generation to generation,
it is changing all the time because each generation adds something of its own before passing it on. The
social capital literature has shown that socially held beliefs can shape not only collective actions but
government and economic performance (North 1981; Knack and Keefer, 1997; Landes, 1998; La
Porta et al., 1999; Putnam, 1993). Indeed, La Porta et al. (1999:223) argued that some societies are so
intolerant or distrustful that their governments simply cannot function

The Importance Of Belonging To A Community
Many individuals when asked can identify themselves as belonging to a community. According to the
Oxford dictionary (2010) one definition of community is; all the people who live in a particular area,
country etc. when talked about as a group (p.301). The definition of a community however is
dependent on those who are defining it. Communities can also be defined as the grouping of
individuals who share similar qualities such as religion, race, etc. or who feel a sense of belonging to a
specific group. With the many variations of communities it is unsurprising that a community and its
definition do not always remain the same. Communities shift and morph as the people and
environments within them do the same, some flourish and others crumble. To better understand a
community and its wellbeing, identifying its strengths and needs are essential. Looking within the
community for these identifications and definitions are necessary. Social workers can play a role in
assisting communities to identify their needs and strengths. Social workers can further support and
empower community members to mobilize towards social action and change for their community s
development. The neighborhood of west Broadway is its own community. Its geographical boundaries
have been identified as encompassing the area between Portage Ave (north perimeter line) to River
(south perimeter line) as well as Osborne Street (east perimeter line) to Maryland (west perimeter
line). Within this

My Long Term Goals Of College Admission
Personal Statement Content
My long term goal is to pursue a career as a General Internal Medicine and complete a
Gastroenterology Fellowship. To me, this means delivering state of the art clinical care to my patients
while contributing to the evolution of medicine through education and research. I have wanted to be a
doctor since childhood. To me, being a doctor means goodness of the heart and dedication to healing.
My parents valued education and rigorous work ethics. They taught me that I could be all I wanted.
This upbringing, hard work, and commitment landed me at the top of my class throughout school.
I graduated from high school as one of the top twenty students nationwide (in a class of 2000 student).
In Sudan, the high school final examination is one of the most competitive exams and is the major
determinant of college admission. I was accepted and award a full tuition scholarship to University of
Khartoum Medical School. This is the top medical school in the country.
The beginning of medical education marked a new stage in my life. My first clinical rotation as a
fourth year medical student was Internal Medicine, where I looked after patients with a wide spectrum
of diseases. As I cared for more and more patients, my appreciation of the importance of Medicine
grew and my understanding of how I could be a part of medicine developed. Sir William Osler said, It
is much more important to know what sort of a patient has a disease than what sort of a disease a

Analysis Of James Joyce s Dubliners Dubliners
Bria LeeAnn Coleman
ENG 299
Dr. Mark Facknitz
October 12, 2015
Epiphanies in James Joyce s Dubliners Characters in Dubliners experience revelations in their every
day lives which James Joyce called epiphanies. Merriam Webster defines an epiphany as an
illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. While word epiphany has a religious connotation,
these epiphanies characters in Dubliners experience do not bring new experiences and possibility of
reform that epiphanies usually have. Joyce s epiphanies allow characters to better understand their
circumstances, generally full of sadness and grief. After these revelations, characters go back to their
lives with acceptance but frustration. Dubliners fail to see their situation fully, which is the reason they
lacked reaching their full potential. Dubliners is full of characters in lethargic positions that Joyce saw
as the fate of all Dubliners. In each story, he gave each individual the possibility of an epiphany, but
often the characters failed to break through and see their ability to change their situations, because of
this, some of these epiphanies occur only on the narrative level, showing the reader that the story s
character missed their epiphany. In fact, in The Dead , the scene is set on/around January 6th, which is
the Feast of the Epiphany. The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ s divinity
to the Magi. The Dead is also Joyce s last chance to make clarity of an epiphany. Will this

The Influence Of Lying In High School
Two days after a big math test, I was sitting in my usual seat in the back of the class while our teacher
was handing back our test grades. Because I was in the back of the class, I got my grade last. The time
it took the teacher to arrive to the last row felt like the waiting line at the airport; the time just stopped.
My mind drifted while I thought about what I got on the test. I had studied hard for that test, but I was
not sure if I performed well enough for a high grade. My test sliding onto my table snapped me back
to reality. When I looked at it, I felt relieved. Written in red stood 98/100, but when I saw the comment
beside, my smile left my face. He had commented one word: Fine. I could not understand why. Was he
not pleased with me? I have always thought that fine meant, you did all right, just okay, or not too bad.
After class, I approached the teacher and asked him why he was not pleased with my grade. He looked
at me, surprised, and said, What do you mean? I was really glad with your grade ... Show more

Probably the most common lie that people in their lifetime is, I am fine. Three weeks ago, I got I call
from my parents, and got the news that my grandmother had been diagnosed with lung cancer. My
grandmother has always taken care of herself. She does not smoke, and goes hiking nearly without
sweating. I felt devastated that I was at least thirty hours away from home with no way of getting
home in time if something serious was to happen quickly. The next couple of days, I did not act as
myself. My friends noticed that I did not smile as much as usual and asked what was going on with
me. The easy way out, without telling them the truth, was just saying I am fine, and try to fake a smile.
Telling them I was just feeling more homesick than usual. People often use I am fine so they do not
have to go into details about what is bothering them. Usually this means they are getting through life

to the Thalassemias red blood cells appear normal in appearance but there are not enough of them

  • 2. Examples Of Greed In Mcteague Written in 1899, Frank Norris novel, McTeague serves as a view of societal factions of his time period. Norris illustrates the stratification of society in this San Francisco community by using the concept of Social Darwinism. He gives detailed accounts of the inner workings of society along with the emotions of the time. Through his characters, Norris shows the separation of classes and the greed that grew abundantly during the late 19th century. He also gives a grim picture of survival in his depiction of the theory of natural selection. In the first chapter, Norris paints a picture of a town setting. He describes Polk Street as one of those cross streets peculiar to Western cities, situated in the heart of the residence quarter, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These people are separated by their occupation, which also determines their activity on Polk Street. In noticing this activity, one can see the distinct lines drawn between the workers and the wealthy. Also, in this story of greed and deception told, the reader can see the underlying greed of the working class. The characters of Maria Macapa and Zerkow ooze greed from every pore. At the beginning of the novel, Maria can be found going through the tenant s apartments for junk to turn in to Zerkow for payment. Once there, she delights in telling the story of her family s former fortune concentrating on a gold plate, for which Zerkow drools over the mere thought of. • 3. Bondocks And Black Dynamite Analysis Racism is still an issue in the United States of America. Many authors of satirical cartoons such as The Boondocks and Black Dynamite have emphasized these events in a satirical manner to try to get the American public involved and stop the racial oppression that is occurring. However, many audience members do not take these types of shows seriously and view them as a joke rather than a serious topic. As the majority of audience members not taking satirical shows such as The Boondocks and Black Dynamite seriously has led to the support of racism instead of the abolishment of it. Cartoons such as The Boondocks and Black Dynamite highlight racial beliefs and pokes fun at the ignorance behind them. For instance, a scene from The Boondocks depicts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This misinterpretation is due to audience members coming from different cultural backgrounds resulting in many viewers finding some parts of the show humorous while others find it offensive (Habib, 2008). The cultural backgrounds that the audience members come from may also affect as to how much they know about other cultures and not just their own. This is what many African American people fear when shows such as The Boondocks and Black Dynamite are aired on television since the cartoons might give a negative representation of the African American community and reinforce stereotypes (Rockler, 2002 p. 409). Instances of these misinterpretations can be found throughout multiple episodes of The Boondocks and Black Dynamite. For instance, in The Boondocks episode, Granddad s Fight, written by Aaron McGruder and Rodney Barnes the theme of the episode was that nigga moments end badly. Throughout the episode Robert J. Freeman prepares to fight Colonel H. Stinkmeaner, a blind old man, since Stinkmeaner made Robert look like a fool by beating him up in a parking lot. Huey, Robert s grandson, trains Robert since Huey believes that Stinkmeaner is a blind swordsman, but in the end, Huey realizes he was wrong. However, Huey was too late and was unable to talk his granddad, Robert, out of fighting Stinkmeaner resulting in Stinkmeaner s death, which leads to the overall theme that nigga moments end badly (2005). The overall message that McGruder and Barnes were trying to make in this episode is that the African American community needs to stop living up to their stereotypes and realize the way they represent their culture when they perform these actions. Throughout this episode, there are multiple scenes of the authors purpose such as Huey continuously trying to convince his grandfather, Robert, from going ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Osmosis In Potato Cells The hypothesis tested was as the concentration of the sodium chloride solution increases, the change in mass of the potato cylinders will decrease, from gaining to losing mass, allowing the isotonic point of the potato cells to be found which was supported by both the group and class results. These results showed that increasing the sodium chloride solution concentration allowed it to approach the isotonic point and then surpass it when the solution became hypertonic and the net movement of water was out of the potato cells. The graph is indicative of when the potato was in a hypotonic solution (above the x axis) there was a net movement of water into the potato cell resulting in an increase in mass. The opposite is true of hypertonic solutions (below the x axis) resulting in a decrease in mass. Where the graph crossed the x axis is where the potato cells isotonic point is, this is where the external solution has the same concentrations as the internal cell cytoplasm Osmosis is a process by which water moves through a partially permeable membrane down a concentration gradient. As this net movement of water occurs from high to low concentrations it is a passive process and therefore does not require energy to occur. There are three types of solutions that a cell can be in, in relation to which direction osmosis will occur. In hypertonic solutions, there is a higher osmotic concentration than in the cell s cytoplasm, so plasmolysis occurs. This is where water moves out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Though the nurse cannot amend the past, one must realize that trust must be built in order to effectively care for the African American patient. It is also important for the nurse to avoid stereotyping the patient based on race or ethnicity. (Giger, 2013) During the interview, it became apparent to the interviewer that Sinkler family may not be the stereotypical African American. Education and integration was important in order to prosper in the American society and culture. • 6. American Air Flight 11 Essay Fourteen years has passed since that fateful attack on the United States where multiple terrorist commandeered commercial aircrafts and crashed them into the World Trade Center buildings and the Pentagon. Mohammed Atta and his accomplices hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, crashing the aircraft into the North Tower whilst a few minutes later, their associate, Marwan al Shehhi and other accomplices crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower. Both of these individuals obtained and received their pilot s licenses at Huffman Aviation in Florida by training on large jet flight simulators. A fellow terrorist, Ziad Jarrah, who crashed United Airlines Flight 93 before his intended target, believed to be The White House, also acquired his pilot training at Florida. Although these individuals trained and acquired their licenses and certificates at general aviation flight school within the United States, the use of these aircraft as weapons of mass destruction showed that there was a massive gap in our nation s National security. The reason for this is the fact that all these individuals were from foreign countries and they were able to get their pilot licenses meant that there was a weak United States general aviation security program, especially when they trained pilots from foreign countries. • 7. Hegemonic Masculinity Summary R.W. Connell s (1995) concept of hegemonic masculinity is the most significant theoretical device for understanding the masculinity hierarchy. Demetriou (2001) states how hegemonic masculinity expresses two different social practices, from a social constructivist view. The first is that men benefit from the patriarchal system of society. The second process is that there is an intramasculine hierarchy by which the social order of men is created and maintained. Connell (1995) argues that this is the reason for the societal gender order where not only do men uphold power over women, but also certain men are dominant over other men. Demetriou (2001) criticises Connell s term of hegemonic masculinity for being too broad, as the main focus is usually placed on the intramasculine process. He therefore believes this process to be internal hegemony (ibid). In terms of the intramasculine order , Connell argues that there is a specific type of masculinity that is revered the most and holds dominance over all other. Men who most closely exemplify this archetype are considered to hold the most social capital. In this model Connell states that gay men are at the bottom of the order and straight men that embody certain characteristics sit atop the hierarchy. Connell s model furthers Brannon s (1976) work. In this he suggests four rules by which men should follow. Hence, in Connell s (1995) model homophobia is a significant factor in sitting at the top of the hierarchy and ... • 8. Black Masculinity And The Hip Hop Culture In the predominantly patriarchal history of the world masculinity and what it means to be a man have differed from culture to culture. When it comes to African American history and culture, particularly what it has meant to be a man has no clear set of universal rules or guidelines. There are a few different sources such as hip hop and television many young black men across America draw their sense of masculinity from. On the other hand, there are role models in black communities that many young black men also draw their sense of masculinity from. With so many different sources to draw a sense of what it means to be a black man in today s society from what is the true definition of black masculinity. In black media today the hip hop culture is often referred to when defining what it means to be a black person in society. In particular the hip hop culture is where many young black men pull both positive and negative aspects of black masculinity. Many mainstream hip hop songs often create a common misogyny by objectifying and stereotyping women. An example of this can be heard in the song Nasty Girl by The Notorious B.I.G. where he states: Conversate. Sex on the first date. I state, You know what you do to me? She starts off, Well I don t usually. Then I, whip it out, rubber no doubt. Step out, show me what you all about. Fingers in your mouth, open up your blouse, pull your G string down South. Aoowww. We have all heard the dumb blonde jokes that are now the vast majority of jokes told. Media has branded the blonde as what the world knows to be the archetype of the dumb girl. Today a member of society is judged on his/her looks, personality, and money. However, no matter how smart, poor, or passionate one is, as a blonde, one is automatically stereotyped. The stereotype points to a human being that is dumb, pretty, rich, and stuck up. This paper will discuss how the stereotype is used, to received, and branded. The dumb blonde is a popular culture stereotype often applied to women with blonde hair. Now the blonde has been branded by the dumb blonde impression. In the article No Logo by Naomi Klein it is stated that the brand is not a reflection of quality but a reflection of what the marketing department wants it to stand for (Klein, 3). For example the everyday blonde symbols a dingy and arrogant but attractive and popular woman. This is an identity that people have adapted in to their lifestyles. A few years ago society seen the brainless blonde everywhere partly due to the marketing corporation because it a part of advertisement that fits a particular style of people. • 11. What Is Statistics Statistics can be defined as the science that deals with the collection, classification, analysis, and interpretation of numerical facts of data, and that, by use of mathematical theories of probability, imposes order and regularity on aggregates of more or less disparate elements (Dictionary.com, LLC, 2008). Yet how do we use these specific elements in our everyday working lives? Many don t realize the extent to which we as a culture base our decisions on statistics. We us them in something as small as predicting the outcome of a game or number of points that a team will score. Statistics surrounds us in many ways and in many forms. As the American Statistical Association president Jon Kettenring stated, I like to think of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet when it came closer and more information was pulled they realized that this statistical information was indeed inaccurate and did not provide enough data to see the true statistics on Clemens. They noted that to be accurate they needed to look at all of the athletes that have as successful as Clemens not just in the same age bracket. When looking at this particular information they noted that indeed Clemens was irregular and did not fit the mold of the normal athlete not using performance enhancing drugs. This shows that with inaccurate and inadequate information that the wrong conclusion can be made. (Knowledge@Wharton, 2008) Just seeing this information makes you realize the importance of collecting information for correct statistical analysis. When researching statistics you can also see that there is much relying on the statistical analysis s that are made. With that we see that we must set standards for researching and making statistical analyses. First and foremost the information must be suited to its purpose. Going along with that there are a total of 5 more areas that one must check when submitting statistical information, info must be as accurate as possible, information must be as fresh as possible, information must be readily accessible, information must be comparable internationally and overtime, as well as statistics shall be consistent and as uniform as possible. Kohn (1994) suggested that policymakers and society need to balance private rights to convert land with public benefits from keeping wetlands inact by compensating wetland owners or society can regulate conversion of wetlands. However, the facts that about 82 percent of wetlands are privately owned in US and there is no clear agreement between private owners and public (Heimlich, et al. 1998) make wetland protection more complicated and controversy. Valueing wetlands can help visualizing the benefits of wetlands, however difficult to implement, since values of wetlands are affected by historical events, technological development and social views. In addition, even when wetlands values are determined, these values will vary temporaly and spatially, for examples not all wetlands have the flooding protection values or the recreational values can seasonally change. It is therefore the problem of institutional arrangement to balance the public benefits (positive externalities of wetlands) and private interests. Policy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 13. The Good Life Of Andrew Carnegie Human nature dictates the necessity of being successful and happy, and to find internal contentment, but what truly defines the good life? Everyone makes decisions about the person they want to be and what is most important to them: Which do you value more, your wealth or your friendships? Do you want to be famous or truly loved? Do you care what people think or are you just trying to please yourself? I think the good life is a combination of everything, and is a fine line that everyone must walk if they want to be truly content. Some people consider freedom the meaning of the good life. Thoreau teaches that the good life is freedom from desire. To have a good life people must be free to make their own choices and mistakes. However, other people have a different opinion about the good life Andrew Carnegie believes people can find the good life through success and wealth. Yet still, others want neither of these, choosing instead to stay innocent with no responsibilities like Adam and Eve, free from decisions and the stresses of everyday life. Another view is Freud s Pleasure Principle that suggests people are interested only in fun and doing whatever they want all the time. Moreover, these people don t want to worry about anything else. I believe the definition of a good life can be described in three simple words, freedom, love, and happiness. Freedom: we should be able to choose where we live, work and what we do with our lives. Love: everyone should know what it feels ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The, Meridian Hill, And Lynne Rabinowitz The Civil Rights Movement was a tumultuous era, not only did black activists and leaders fight for their inalienable rights but there were also many gender, racial and generational conflicts within the Movement. In the novel Meridian by Alice Walker, the three central characters, Truman Held, Meridian Hill, and Lynne Rabinowitz are young passionate activists during the Civil Rights Movement. However, the relationship of genders and the racial and generational dynamics mold and influence the actions of the characters. In this essay, I will argue that Meridian is forced to constantly collide and reconcile with past generations, Truman is self conflicted with the idea of abandoning his African roots, and Lynne is conflicted with the idea of white guilt. Lynne Rabinowitz escapes her Jewish northern life in order to experience the suffering of the other side in order to satiate her white guilt and her lack of diversity. • 18. How Does Voltaire Portray Women Laurent Bélanger Supervisor: Lucy Grove English Literature March 2016 How does Voltaire portray women in Candide? Women in the 18th Century enjoyed very few privileges when it came to their expected gender roles within society. As he did other aspects of the culture of his time, Voltaire exposes this stark inequality in the satirical Candide, especially through the lack of many female characters in the novel and his characterisation of Cunégonde, Paquette and the Old Woman. Their initial lack of complexity and surprisingly similar lives despite strikingly different origins highlight the coarse existence of women in the 18th Century. Additionally, Voltaire s portrayal of sexual exploitation as completely habitual seeks to underline women s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Initially, her noble status wraps her in a sense of grandeur, and yet, by the the novel s second chapter, she is practically exposed as a typical damsel in distress, fainting at Candide s expulsion from the Baron s castle, the earliest sign of trouble . Unlike these two characters, the third significant female figure in Candide the Old Woman is neither pretty, tractable, nor grand. In fact, she lacks characterisation upon her first appearance, introduced merely as an old woman (Voltaire, 16), a name she retains until the novel s end. Thus, the novel s three primary female characters appear, at first, to be little more than archetypal characters, despite their later evolution: the pretty maid, the damsel in distress and the witch like servant. It is this apparent lack of character development which illustrates the insignificance of women s roles in 18th Century society. Regardless of this apparent lack of complexity, Voltaire depicts women in Candide perhaps surprisingly as survivors, highlighting a crucial aspect of women s existence in the society of the day. Following the Bulgar attack on the Baron s castle, the raping of Cunégonde until she could be raped no more and her subsequent disembowel[ment] (Voltaire, 10), the reader naturally assumes her death; it is therefore a great surprise when she reappears in the novel s seventh chapter. Macbeth acknowledges his aging, but in the rest of the play it is shown that he has no fear when it comes to death. In fact, when his ineluctable end comes during his epic grapple for power with Macduff, he keeps battling, even though he knows he will meet his demise. This is a contrast between the speaker in Sonnet 73 ; this man is perturbed by death, yet he knows the certainty of it, like Macbeth. The ashes of his youth are past years, we cremate the dead and turn them into ashes, and his youth is now the same, gone and past. The fire is [c]onsumed with that which it was nourish d by (12). The fire will be engulfed in the ashes, like the speaker, who is entangled in the final thoughts of his youth before death. The speaker has also transitioned from yellow leaves, which come in autumn, to the sunset that fades in the west, to the glowing of such fire. This reveals the expeditious shortening of time, and the speaker s realization that death will come more quickly than he thought. He uses a sequence, beginning in autumn, which takes months to conclude, a sunset, which happens at the end of a day, to a fire, which takes mere hours to die. Most Californians are introduced to the California Mission system in one of two ways: in their early education, or when they first visit a mission. According to the Oxford dictionary (2010) one definition of community is; all the people who live in a particular area, country etc. when talked about as a group (p.301). The definition of a community however is dependent on those who are defining it. Communities can also be defined as the grouping of individuals who share similar qualities such as religion, race, etc. or who feel a sense of belonging to a specific group. With the many variations of communities it is unsurprising that a community and its definition do not always remain the same. Analysis Of James Joyce s Dubliners Dubliners Bria LeeAnn Coleman ENG 299 Dr. Mark Facknitz October 12, 2015 Epiphanies in James Joyce s Dubliners Characters in Dubliners experience revelations in their every day lives which James Joyce called epiphanies. Merriam Webster defines an epiphany as an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. While word epiphany has a religious connotation, these epiphanies characters in Dubliners experience do not bring new experiences and possibility of reform that epiphanies usually have. Joyce s epiphanies allow characters to better understand their circumstances, generally full of sadness and grief. After these revelations, characters go back to their lives with acceptance but frustration. Dubliners fail to see their situation fully, which is the reason they lacked reaching their full potential. Dubliners is full of characters in lethargic positions that Joyce saw as the fate of all Dubliners. In each story, he gave each individual the possibility of an epiphany, but often the characters failed to break through and see their ability to change their situations, because of this, some of these epiphanies occur only on the narrative level, showing the reader that the story s character missed their epiphany. In fact, in The Dead , the scene is set on/around January 6th, which is the Feast of the Epiphany. The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ s divinity to the Magi.
