brothers were similar in some ways and different in others, but they all hold lessons for us today, for

Ashoka the Great ruled between 273 BCE and 231 BCE as the last Great King of the Mauryan Empire
of India (von Sivers, pg. 219). Upon taking the throne, Ashoka continued his father s, as well as
grandfather s, goal of expanding the empire (von Sivers, pg. 220). In doing so, he caused the death of
thousands, which left him pained and questioning of his purpose. To find some sort of easement, he
became a Buddhist and used violence for protection or as a last resort (von Sivers, pg. 220). After
finding his new religion, Ashoka believed a king should set the morals for his people, a very different
belief than most rulers. Ashoka s belief is made evident in his actions after adopting Buddhism and the
Seven Pillar Edicts he instructed his people to follow.
Thirteen years into his rule, King Ashoka adopted Buddhism as his personal religion, and this

For example, when Louie is captured by the Japanese and taken to a POW (Prisoner of War) camp
where he among others if both physically and emotionally abused he keeps trying to survive. He
knows from firsthand experience that if he perseveres it will get better. This is proven when Louie

The statement context is all states that all truth is dependent on context, where context refers to the
circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, through which the truth can be

Art seems to have a limited amount of context relative to other areas of knowledge and can refute the
statement Context is all . One can argue that there is no context in which to perceive a piece of
artwork since the perceiver may not know the artist s intentions. For example, Italian renaissance
artist: Leonardo de Vinci, had created a painting which he entitled Last Supper, which would be
perceived differently by someone who is of the Roman Catholic faith as opposed to someone who is
atheist and may not be aware of the Last Supper and its significance to the religion of Catholicism.
The intention of de Vinci was to have the perceiver view the painting as the Last Supper, as the last
time that Jesus would have a meal before he was betrayed and eventually crucified. Alternatively, an
atheist without prior knowledge or context of the Last Supper, this person may be aware that it is Jesus
and his apostles, however, he or she would not understand the true significance of the piece of work
and how the previous context of this work connects with the interpretation. This idea, however, can be
countered by saying that the viewer although does not have the context from the artist has personal
context to interpret a work. The interpretation that the perceiver carries is the context that the
interpreter would need to analyze the painting. Therefore, viewing the painting in the atheist
perspective, the significance of the painting would be contrasted. In the area of knowledge of art, not
only visual arts involve some context in order to obtain knowledge, the musical arts requires context
as well. For music, there are many ways to interpret a musical piece dependent upon the mood and
