Digital Music And Its Effects On The Music Industry
In July 2011, Spotify launched in the United States. This program not only had the ability to
stream music for its listeners, but it was also free. As long as the artists were featured on this
program, users could listen to any of their songs at any time. At first, this was only restricted to
desktop computer usage, but since then Spotify has launched its app available for mobile devices,
further stretching this power of free and instant media at any time. Although this may sound great
to users like you and me, the people who ultimately suffer are the artists that put there music out
there on Spotify. By allowing us to listen to their music for free, the profits from CD s and iTunes
digital music sales have begun to decrease. This means that artists who have their media on Spotify
overall do not make the profit that they normally should. Since Spotify is a relatively new addition
to the music industry, I will be focusing on the effects it is having on sales regarding teenagers
since they are the highest population that currently uses Spotify because of it s appearance in their
generation.
According to a paper by Abhijit Sen, a renowned professor with a Ph.D in Economics from the
University of Cambridge, titled Music in the Digital Age: Musicians and Fans Around the World
Come Together on the Net, statistics show that the music industry and the major record labels are
in a slow slump (Sen 8). Ever since Apple created iTunes, the number of CD purchases have been

Irobot Research Paper
Could you imagine a world where robots take over the world? People are afraid that in the
future, robots will take over the human race like in the movie iRobot. Robots will play a very
important role in our future and they are already are. According to Apple co founder Steve
Wozniak states that a robotic future powered by artificial intelligence would be scary and very
bad for people and that robots would get rid of the slow humans , Wozniak has staged a U turn
and says he now thinks robots taking over would be good for the human race. They re going to
be smarter than us and if they re smarter than us then they ll realize they need us, Today robots are

Big companies like Google are signing a 60 year, $1.16 billion lease Moffett Naval Airfield in
San Francisco the historic Hangar One as part of its expansion into robotics, aviation and space
exploration. Kyrre Glette, Associate Professor at Oslo University s Department of Informatics
states In the future, robots must be able to solve tasks in deep mines on distant planets, in
radioactive disaster areas, in hazardous landslip areas and on the sea bed beneath the Antarctic.
These environments are so extreme that no human being can cope. Everything needs to be
automatically controlled. For an example a robot is entering the wreckage of a nuclear power
plant. It finds a staircase that no one has thought of. The robot takes a picture. The picture is
analyzed. The arms of one of the robots is fitted with a printer. This produces a new robot, or a
new part for the existing robot, which enables it to negotiate the stairs. This is the primary
example of what the future could hold with robotic technology. You can believe those who say
robots will over run the world in the future, but robots have multiple purposes that can do
everything and will benefit us. Therefore, robots will play a very important part in our future to do
the impossible. Breakthroughs will come quickly for robotic innovations. Driverless cars and new
space information may take decades to come, while other completely unexpected robotic
applications could

The Elements Of A Great Speech By Martin Luther King Jr.
Life is always easier when there is a way to find the answer. A cake is easier to bake with a recipe
to follow, and a great speech needs a formula or list of aspects to include. Good morning Mrs
Roche and students. For my presentation today I will explore a formula I have created that
contains all the elements of a great speech. I produced this formula while I was studying some of
the work of one of the best speakers and leaders of all time: Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist Minister, Activist, Humanitarian, and leader in the
African American Civil Rights Movement. He was known for his amazing speaking skills and
visionary speeches, which he used to successfully make a non violent movement against
segregation and injustice during his time. He was a great speaker and a great leader. So what
better of a leader than Martin Luther King Jr to help identify what key aspects need to be put into
the formula. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martin Luther King s speeches are considered great because he manages to connect with the
audience through their emotional ties to the event he is talking about. In his eulogy for the death of
three girls killed in the bombing of their church he used the words :
These children unoffending, innocent and beautiful were victims of one of the most vicious and
tragic crimes ever perpetuated against humanity , this language both pays respect towards the girls
but also links back to his fight against injustice and this is exactly what the listeners will respond
to. They will be grateful to his kind words but will agree with him that it wasn t fair for the girls to
die so innocent and young, and that they want this to

The Journey Of Alvar NГєГ±ez Cabeza De Vaca
Throughout the history of Texas, Europeans have influenced Texas history and its findings. From
the beginning, Europeans were the ones that discovered Texas while exploring the Americas. A
Spanish explorer, Cabeza De Vaca, was the first person to ever step foot on Texas soil. He
documented his journey about his findings in Texasand the Americas. The book was called The
Journey of Alvar NГєГ±ez Cabeza de Vaca. When the Spanish came, they spread their diseases to
the defenseless Native Americans that resided in Texas.
A Frenchman named Rene Robert Cavelier Sieur de la Salle explored Texas in 1682.

The first wave of immigration occurred between 1831 to 1869, many European immigrants
especially people from Ireland and Germany. By the time the Civil War came to an end, many
Europeans had immigrated to and populated Texas. In the period of the great migration, thousands
of Europeans immigrated to Texas.
In 1842 to 1878, Germans created an organization for German immigrants to attempt to constitute
New Germany at the borders of Texas, which was called the Adelsverein. It brought approximately
sixty thousand German immigrants to Texas. Affluent Germans created a society, in which they
helped farmers who didn t have enough money to buy farmlands. The Germans formed a German
belt, where they clustered in small communities from Houston and Galveston to Kerrville and into
the Hill Country.
The Germans affected the Texas Revolution quite a bit as well.
Some German immigrants lended a hand to the Texans, helping them with the battles in the Texas
Revolution. They fought at the Battle of San Jacinto, died defending the Alamo, some escaped and
were the survivors of the Goliad Massacre, and one German even signed the Texas Declaration of
Independence. Since many German immigrants had settled here, they passed laws in German
including English as well. The Germans had quite a big impact on

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Arbitration
Cost benefit analysis of arbitration
Introduction
Arbitration is legal technique used to resolve any disputes outside of the courts. Arbitration
allows for speedy and cheap resolution of any disputes, the parties involved in a dispute agree to
appoint a third person (arbitrator) who will hear their testimonies, and look into the evidence
they provide. The arbitrator s decision cannot be challenged in a law court as it is considered
final and the parties involved have to accept the decision (Brams Merrill, 1986). There are only
very limited circumstances where the decision of an arbitrator can be challenged, and this is
mostly if there can be proof from one of the parties showing that the arbitrator was biased in their
decision or ruling. The chosen arbitrator will be an experienced person in the area of the dispute.
Arbitration Costs
The costs involved in normal arbitration are minimal and the amount of time the arbitrator takes
in order to reach a decision is short as compared to normal litigation cases. The costs are minimal
as there is no need for judges and juries to be involved. Some arbitration decisions may drag on
for longer just as the normal litigation cases, and this would increase the costs incurred in
preparation for the arbitration. The arbitrator s fees vary depending on the amounts involved in the
suite and also the country where the arbitration will take place. Considering that the deals the firm
is signing are for $1 million then the fees will be

The Theme Of Homosexuality In A Picture Of Dorian Gray By...
Ellmann, R. (1988) Oscar Wilde. United States: Distributed by Random House. This biography
of Oscar Wilde is thorough and gives a good understanding of how his life influenced his work,
especially his only novel, A Picture of Dorian Gray. This biography details Wilde s philosophical
nature, especially in relation to aestheticism. The combination of this philosophical view as well as
Wilde s view of society and his homosexualitymakes it easier to appreciate the underlying themes of
the novel. This source was useful in understanding the views of society at the time, to give a deeper
understanding of the key themes of this novel.

Nunokawa believes this is evident in the idea of Hellenism, where Lord Henry s relationship with
Dorian is more than just that of a role model. Nunokawa argues that the book was seen as
controversial, not only because of a possible homosexual theme, but additionally due to the
relationship between Dorian s conflict between his sexuality and the views of society at the time.
This is an interesting argument and this source can be used to explain feelings Wilde may have had
at the time, and he portrayed these thoughts through Dorian s relationships with other characters in
the novel.
Sinfield, A. (1996) The Wilde Century: Oscar Wilde, Effeminacy and the Queer Movement.
United States: New York: Columbia University Press, 1994. Sinfield s book discusses the
relationship between our contemporary view of Wilde and how Wilde s effeminacy was perceived
in society at the time. Sinfield discusses how Wilde s behaviour and aesthetic philosophy shaped
the attitude towards homosexuals for the next century. Sinfield argues that the trial of Oscar Wilde
was pivotal in the changing perceptions of society. This book helps when critically analysing Wilde
s work in a contemporary context, and how influential it was in the changing perceptions in society.

Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts
We live in a world where the internet and social media plays a big role. There are constantly
becoming less and less physical contact, and fewer face to face relations. This is demonstrated
by the fact that we keep in touch with each other over Facebook, shopping takes place over the
internet, we keep up with our economy whit online banking and meet friends and lovers over
online dating sites. In late modern society, we are always available. But are we really missing out
on a lot of important stuff, and is this necessarily a bad thing? This is also the theme in Jonathan
Franzen s essay, Liking is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts from 2011. The focus in this essay will

He makes sure that it is interesting and fun for the young generation to read his essay, he is
doing this by the personal stories and fun comparisons, but also by using words and phenomena
the young readers can relate to, for an example he uses words as liking and friending , Liking, in
general, is commercial culture s substitute for loving (p.9, l. 83 85) phenomena s from facebook.
On the other hand Jonathan Franzen also uses some foreign words as carbon foodprint ,
anesthetized dream by using these foreign words he makes sure to seem smart , so we get the
feeling of a person who knows what he is talking about, and on the other hand also a fun and
interesting person. This is again something that strengthens his ethos appeal, so it is easier for him
to convince and engage the young readers. If he was writing in a way with no humor, only foreign
words, and maybe used a lot of statistics facts, instead of personal stories, he would not engage the
young readers. So by writing in this very specific way, he knows that the youngster will find his
essay fun and interesting. So as you see Jonathan Franzen uses a lot of different methods to
convince and engage the young readers.
Jonathan Franzen s main message is that, the young generation should spend more time in the real
world instead of the world of liking . He wants the young readers to understand

Dickens Attitude Toward Education in Hard Times Essay
Dickens Attitude Toward Education in Hard Times Dickens wrote Hard Times in 1854, when the
industrial revolution was active. This influenced the way the book was written. In the first two
chapters of Hard Times, Dickens attitudes to education are presented. He uses two characters,
Gradgrind and M Choakumchild to show the bad views of education and the opposition to
Dickens views. There is an immediate tension between Dickens way of thinking and Gradgrind s
and M Choakumchild s. Gradgrind and M Choakumchild call the children vessels and do not use
names but numbers. The children are allowed no independent thought. While Bitzer is how he is
supposed to be, Sissy Jupe is free spirited and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is said that Gradgrind always mentally introduces himself, which suggests that he self
conscious and wants to know who he is before he shares it with anyone else. He is also organised
and this is seen when it says with a rule and a pair of scales, and the multiplication table always
in his pocket . M Choakumchild is introduced later in the second chapter; he is one of the one
hundred and forty schoolmasters. Instead of the way he looked being described, like
Gradgrind, his intelligence was described. The subjects and skills that he studied and has
knowledge about were listed, e.g. biography , algebra and vocal music . M Choakumchild
knows a lot about these subjects because they are full of facts and imagination is not really
needed to know about them. He believes that fact is all that the children need to know and like
Gradgrind does not believe in freethinking. M Chockumchild is the one who will teach the
children how to be like in school life and social life. Gradgrind and M Choakumchild are
presented as plain people who do not like change. They have only one straight forward idea of
how the education system should be. They both see children as empty vessels and believe that
they should be seen and not heard. Dickens shows the juxtaposition of two pupils in the first two
chapters; Sissy Jupe and Bitzer. Sissy Jupe is known as girl

Matthew Arnold Dover Beach Tone

English 102
March 20th, 2015
Dover Beach Analysis The poem, Dover Beach, written by Matthew Arnold compares human
faith to a sea s roaring waves crashing against a shore. The speaker is someone living in a house
among Dover Beach on the coast of New England s northern sea. The speaker is talking with
someone else in the house as Arnold writes, Come to the window, sweet is the night air! (Line 6)!
Also the person being spoken to can later be interpreted as a wife or husband as the speaker states,
Ah, love, let us be true (Line 29). The first stanza has a positive beginning by describing the
scenery of the beach, the full moon, the moon s light glimmering onto the sea, and the sight of the
French coast in the distance. The intense imagery puts the reader in a dynamic scene at the
peaceful beach, watching the waves brush the pebbles back and forth onto the shore. The tone in
the first stanza may seem peaceful; however, it depicts stillness for the reader. As the speaker
watches the waves move back and forth, it is just a rinse and repeat process that is observed over
again. The stanza may begin on a positive note, but ends on a negative note as the speaker states,

The Confederate Flag And Mississippi
The Confederate Flag and Mississippi The Confederate flag remains to be a hot topic that is
drawing a lot of controversy in the state of Mississippi. Some individuals feel that the flag has a
right to be flown all over the state; while, others can see it removed completely. The purpose of
this paper is to discuss in detail four important topics as follows: (1) the history of the
Confederate flag, (2) the economic impact, (3) state agencies and municipalities stance and (4)
the Legislative position concerning the issue. The flag originated as a banner, but in today s
society is recognized as a symbol. The symbol of the flag represents the Confederate war.
Because of strong emotional ties Confederate ancestors have a particular perception of the flag.
However, everyone does not share the same opinion, some perceptions are different and often
conflicts with what others understand the flag to mean (Coski, 2015). During the war in the year
of 1862, Southerners were known as Confederates. Therefore, they disconnected themselves from
symbols of old, which was the Confederate national flags and adopted the symbol of the
Confederate battle flag. The flag perhaps, inextricably intertwined with states rights, slavery, and
the Confederacy which gave the battle flags a new meaning. The flag will always be the flag of
the Confederate soldier , and therefore Southerners would like for it to be respected as such.
However, since 1865 the flag has taken on additional meanings,

Dody Dysmorphic Disorder
Body dysmorphic disorder or BDD is a type pf mental illness in which you can t stop thinking
about a flaw in your appearance. You intensely obsess over your appearance and body image,
often for many hours a day. Your perceived flaw causes you significant distress, and your
obsession impacts your ability to function in your daily life. You may seek out numerous
cosmetic procedures or excessively exercise to try to fix your perceived flaw, but you re never
satisfied. Body dysmorphic disorder is also known as dysmorphophobia, the fear of having a
deformity. Although the exact cause of BDD is still unclear, experts believe it is related to
problems with serotonin, one of the brain s chemical neurotransmitters. Poor regulation of
serotonin also plays a role in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and other anxiety disorders,
as well as depression Some people may be more prone to problems with serotonin balance,
including those with family members who have problems with anxiety or depression. This may
help explain why some people develop BDD but others don t. Cultural messages can also play a
role in BDD by reinforcing somebody s concerns about appearance. Critical messages or unkind
teasing about appearance as someone is growing up may also contribute to a person s sensitivity to
BDD. But while cultural messages, criticism, and teasing might harm someone s body image, these
things alone usually do not result in BDD. People with BDD obsess over their appearance

An Organization s Political Structure
Abstract
Budgets are needed by many organisations and have been used since 1922, they re considered to
be key drivers and assessors of performance within a business. They re mainly used in an attempt to
plan and control organisations and their objectives. An organisation s political structure is mainly
affected by budgets as the managers at the top tend to use budgets as a means of power and
authority. Traditional budgeting has both advantages and disadvantages; recently, critics seem to be
against the use of traditional budgets within organisations. This is due to traditional budgeting
being assumed to be very out of date; it has no way of being used in a contingency plan as it has
nothing to do with the changes of markets. If the market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Traditional budgeting is also seen as a tool of repression (Lutz) as these critics attempt to disregard
traditional budgeting they still use it within their organisation; why is this? Traditional budgeting
has strengths and weaknesses but why do critics disregard the use of traditional budgeting but still
decide to use it?
As the traditional budget is criticised; most companies still do not attempt to abandon it to move
on to other types of budgeting such as zero based. They usually attempt to improve it. The points
made on this paper may lead one to think that traditional budgeting is not effective and cannot be
dealt with in this day and age but more than 80% of companies still use it. A survey on 8000
managers in different companies within America was released in 2010 (paper 1). Out of the
managers who responded to the survey; 6400 of them claimed that traditional budgeting was useful.
400 claimed that they were going to abandon it and 8 managers responded saying that they were
going to abandon traditional budgeting within the next couple of years.
Traditional budgets are based on past performances but also take into consideration global rates
such as inflation rates. They are also moulded for the future; this is usually for a period of one year.
It attempts to list budgets for different organisations and these are what higher managers base their
judgement on for the managers that of lower hierarchy. This is through goals and plans

Over a period of 4 years, 10 patients (6 men and 4 women) with abdominal complications of VP
shunt catheter were managed. Their ages at operation were ranged from 10 months to 17 years

operative time of the laparoscopic procedure varied according to the diagnosis. It was 120 minutes
in abdominal pseudocysts, 45 minutes in recurrent congenital inguinal hernias, 100 minutes in
adhesive intestinal obstruction and 35 minutes in subcutaneous cyst. All patients were completed

Our series reinforces the feasibility and safety of laparoscopic management for distal catheter
complications. The advantages of the laparoscopic approach include a shorter hospital stay because
of less postoperative pain. The catheter is positioned under direct vision with less bowel
manipulation, thus reducing the risk of bowel injury and the development of adhesions(3).
Laparoscopy allows us to replace the shunts in the abdominal cavity under direct visual guidance
and cut them to appropriate size if necessary.
In addition, laparoscopy is a diagnostic tool that can be used to exclude any other intra abdominal
process possibly causing abdominal pain. Laparoscopy can be repeated several times in case of
further complications because it is less invasive. This is not the case with laparotomy, which is
more traumatic (3).
The potential problem that has been raised is retrograde leakage of carbon dioxide into the
ventricle. This was not recognized in our series and has not been reported previously. A recent in
vitro study found that none of the valves tested showed any signs of leak associated with
increased gaseous back pressure below a pressure of 80 mm

The Benefits Of Community Gardening
Another aspect of community gardening, is regarding those who participate in it. Community
gardens can be seen in many cities, with the community coming together to grow produce and
relationships along the way. However, it is becoming a growing trend to start this idea at a younger
scale. Many schools across North America have started implementing a gardeninto their after
school or extracurricular programs. By introducing gardening to children at a young age allows
for them to take in many of the benefits that come from gardening, and encouraging new ways of
engagement. Gardening provides many hands on activities for children, including designing,
planting, and harvesting the food (Yost, 2009). Many studies have shown that children who take
care of a garden, or live near one, are more likely to show an interest in gardening as they grow up
and develop a strong relationship with gardens and trees (Lohr, 2005).
In California, school gardens have become very popular and are continuously promoting them
through the State s Education Department. An example of one of the schools in the state is Le
Conte Elementary School, which not only has flowers and vegetables, but also livestock, like goats
and chickens. The science curriculum at the school is very inclusive with gardening activities, such
as propagation, transplanting, and composting (Ferris, 2001).
There have been many studies on the effects of school gardens on children. They have shown that

Remember The Titans ( 2000 )
Remember the Titans (2000), is based on the true story of Coach Herman Boone, the football
coach of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Now Coach Boone becomes the
football coach around 1970, and he is promoted to be the Head Coach of the team, and he is an
African American, while the high school is newly desegregated and starting the controversial
practice of bussing black students to the high school. Now the film starts with Coach Boone
being appointed by the school board as the assistant coach of the Titans football team. And if that
wasn t difficult enough for this town and people to deal with, later that evening it is announced
that Boone is actually the new head coach. As the football team goes off to camp during the
summer, Coach Boone gets to introduce himself to the team and his staff members as to what
kind of teacher, trainer, and coach he is. And Coach Boone is actually quite tough at times,
especially in the beginning of the relationship, when the team is still in training. Sometimes he
is seen as stubborn and seemingly too decisive by some of the other coaches and probably all of
the athletes on the team. He repeatedly keeps turning down ideas from the other coaches and
responds by saying let me worry about my offense. He often plays a very metalized coach. He likes
to get near the players and whisper fourth quarter, over and over again, just as a way to fire up his
athletes. Coach Boone is very self aware that his player s attitudes are

Energy Is The Most Outstanding Ingredient For Socio...
Energy is the most outstanding ingredient for socio economic growth world wide. It exists in
various forms like mechanical, chemical, electrical, heat, light etc. There is minimum amount of
energy required for life sustainability. Most especially from the food we eat but fuel energy is
needed in cooking and in some climate, for heating houses. Research has shown that in 2008 for
instance, the world wide consumption rate of energywas estimated at 500 exajoules per year (EJ)
/y. The importance of an energy system is to secure energy service in the industrial, transport,
house hold and service sectors of the economy. Energy, invariably is the fulcrum of growth of
national economies. Fossil fuels are carriers of hydrocarbon substances. They include coal, crude
oil, and natural gas. Its consumption depletes at any rate. Typically, the looming energy crisis is
sequel to consuming these fossil fuels at a rate that is practically unsustainable. Besides, when
consumed, fossil fuels upset the natural balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, giving rise to
various environmental tipping point. Effects of this carbon dioxide natural imbalance has its long
term contribution to global warming and green house effect. Conversely, renewable energy
systems are resources available on cyclic basis and include solar, hydro, wind, tidal, wave,
geothermal and biodegradable biomass (fuelwood, animal and crop residues, energy crops etc).

Hmong Social Structure
Social Structures: Hmong vs. Lao Migration is inevitable in the case of the aftermath of conflicts
and wars. Indochina or mainland Southeast Asia is a region where similar stories of migration
result to settlement for diverse groups of people. Two ethnic groups that fall into this story are
Hmong and Lao. Both groups have their unique characteristics, ranging from living in different
elevations to having distinctive social organization patterns. Both Hmong and Lao have very
idiosyncratic ethnic identities. Hmong are known for their diaspora from the mountainous region
of southern China into Southeast Asia(Lecture, 02/07/17). They reside in the highlands ranging
from 3,500 to 9,000 feet, while Lao reside in the lowlands below 3500 feet (Lecture,... Show more

Hmong followed a patrilineal kinship system. Only men can inherit properties and belongings; the
father holds title to family property. When couples are married, residence after marriageis either
patrilocal or neolocal, but in the vicinity of paternal house (LeBar, 75). When daughters marry,
they move out of the house. Hmong marriage is regarded as a bond between two clans, so they
have strict exogamy practices. Hmong men remain members of their birth clan for life (Hein,
68). Each of the family clans have a leader, who is the eldest male of the line. Their society was
male centered (Lecture, 01/26/17). On the other hand, Lao followed the Southeast Asian pattern,
which was a bilateral kinship system. Kinship ties are felt to be equally strong on both sides, the
mother and the father (LeBar, 217). Lao kinship is more laid back compared to Hmong. They
pay little attention to genealogies, since tracing more than three generations is difficult for them
(LeBar, 217). Both men and women can inherit in the family as well, so Lao women are less
subordinate to Lao men. Unlike Hmong, Lao couples have freedom in choosing whether to live
on their own or with either spouses family (Lecture, 01/26/17). Lao marriage does not ensue strict
exogamy practices, and Lao, traditionally, have no family names. Lao are known by their given
names, not family names. Overall, Hmong and Lao have the exact opposite types of

The truth of the matter is that many people climb the corporate ladder because they are associated
with the right people whom are making executive decisions that make a difference. The

action provides qualified individuals with a variety of job opportunities; this program could be
viewed as another avenue to excel in a career or towards a higher education.
In many occurrences, minorities have been discriminated because it has been the custom not to
hire them. Many city police and fire departments traditionally did not hire blacks; many craft
unions did not accept black members. Many big companies did not hire blacks for higher positions;
instead, blacks were hired as kitchen assistants and janitors. When these kinds of patterns are

smoking is the number one cause of death in the United States, and it is an easily reversible

percentage that still chooses to do so. Anti smoking campaigns can either promote or prevent

effective as they should be, and most ads are just put in place to place that fear factor in the viewers.
Most times the campaign has to hit harder with facts instead of a graphic depiction of what
smoking leads too. The image is created to get a reaction out of the audience. Whether its
smokers or non smokers, the point is to convey to the dangerous of smoking. The ad will either
increase the distaste of smoking and its negative effects or they will be brushed off because it has

The Idea Of Maintenance Rehearsal
Abstract
Craik Lockhart (1972) suggested levels of Processing Theory, which specified that stimulus
inputs experience consecutive processing operations. A study was conducted using two groups
with different rehearsal techniques and each were then asked to recall from a list of words that
had been read out as precisely as possible. There has been considerable criticism of this theory
however as Baddeley questioned, Is the levels approach based on false assumptions . The idea of
maintenance rehearsal is one that many people are still uncertain of. Psychologists such as
Atkinson and Shiffrin have also made assumptions on memory based on maintenance rehearsal yet
whether this is a false concept is yet to be discovered.
Introduction
Craik and Lockhart (1972) suggested that memory is just a product of the complexity of handling
data and there is no clear variance between short term memory and long term memory. This theory
then resulted in different theories being brought forward in order to prove this statement correct or
incorrect. Craik and Lockhart then suggested the concept of shallow processing. This style of
processing usually takes one of two forms: Phonemic processing, which is encoded by sound or
structural processing which is encoded visually. Shallow processing only encompasses maintenance
rehearsal and leads to fairly short term holding of information. They also suggested the idea of
deep processing which primarily involves semantic processing. Deep processing

The first of Lily s individual weaknesses that lead to her demise is stubbornness; it plays a large
role in why Palmer has such a difficult time dealing with Lily. On a number of occasions through
the correspondence, Lily attempts to treat Palmer as though the two of them are close, intimate
friends. Lily even goes as far as saying to Palmer, I hope you stay for years, with me (Marks
113). If this is not pressure enough, Lily goes on to guilt Palmer by proclaiming, You cannot
leave me alone in this merciless world (Marks 113). When faced with these remarks, she needed
to address Lily s outlook on their relationship to make sure Lily understood that their interaction
had to remain professional. You say that one of your reasons for wishing to be in Durban is that
you want to see more of me, but have you ever asked yourself whether I wish do see more of

you a picture in which you are to be my devoted and intimate friend. Now you must forgive me
for saying that this is all nonsense. Even if you were a European girl of your age it would still be
nonsense (Marks 136). Palmer makes it very clear that Lily s feelings for her are simply not
reciprocated. Palmer says she does not wish to see Lily, and that Lily s perception of their
connection is just nonsense . Critics will argue that Palmer s tone here is too aggressive though.

Causes Of Tyranny
Henry VIII, Joseph Stalin, Ivan IV, Adolf Hitler, Kim Jong II, and more are all tyrants who inflicted
tyranny on their people. Throughout history many tyrants have oppressed their citizens with unfair
and harsh treatment and have gotten away with it. Tyranny is known as a cruel, unreasonable, or

sadistic behavior continues today, it doesn t in the United Statesof America. In 1775 to 1783, the
American Revolutionary War, also known as the U.S. War of Independence, took place. This was
a conflict that arose form growing tensions between residents of Great Britain s 13 North
American colonies and the tyrannical British Crown. In response to the callous treatment, a group
of colonial delegates (including George Washington of Virginia, John and Samuel Adams or
Massachusetts, Patrick Henry of Virginia, and john jay of New York) met in Philadelphia in
September 1774 to give voice to their grievances against the British Crown, which is formally
known as the First Continental Congress. By June 1776, with the Revolutionary War in full swing,
a growing majority of the colonists had come to favor independence from Britain resulting in the
continental Congress drafting the Declaration of Independence on July 4. The thirteen colonies
officially declared their independence from the tyrant ruler known as King George III of Britain.

State the research question that your group is seeking to answer with this project. (In other words,
based on your analysis of the existing political science literature, what important question do you
believe has yet to be addressed, or has been addressed inadequately?)
Do elected judicial officials have an increasing effect on the incarceration rate in comparison to
appointed judges? Furthermore, do states that hold elections for judicial officials experience a
higher incarceration rate in comparison to those states who appoint judges?
State the hypothesis that your group intends to explore in its research design.
In a comparison of states, states that elect judges are more likely than states that appoint judges to

This helped to have more concise data. Also, incarceration rate is measured per 100,000 people,
taking into account the population for each state. The same is true for the violent crime rate, as it
also was measured per 100,000 people. Since both of these variables measured for population, this
was another control variable included in the research. The incarceration rate, crime rate, and
population of the states do not need to be operationalized, as they are already quantitative data. To
operationalize whether or not a state elects or appoints trial judges, we gave each option a specific
number. For example, if a state elects their trial judges, the state was given a one. These states
include: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina,
North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee,
Texas, Virginia, Washington
, West Virginia, and Wisconsin (30 in total). If the state appoints a
judge, the state was given a zero. These states include: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut,
Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming (20 total). This allowed
us to operationalize all variables and compare them more

Students Backpacks In Schools
When in the course of human events, it becomes obligatory for Anaheim High School principal to
contribute new lockers for the use of students. The lockers at school are horrendous. There is food
inside the beaten lockers and are displayed across our campus. This gives our school an
unsatisfactory appearance.
We hold these truths to be obvious, that all students should have the right to use lockers provided
by the school. To lessen the amount of weight on the students backpacks, all students should be able
to keep their sports equipment, dance supplies, band instruments, extra binders, etc... at school in
their lockers without having to hassle through the whole school day without all their school
requirements.
Until now, students have been

Mary Wigman Research Paper
Mary Wigman rejected ballet technique in her dance style, perceiving classical ballet technique as
artificial and confining. Wigman believed that the emphasis should be on the transcendent nature
and spiritual purpose of the dance, while embodying essentialism (pg. 6, Newhall). She knew she
was not the best dancer in the room, but she knew how to be in touch with her emotions while
dancing. She drew upon sources from what was going on in the world during the early 1900 s from
war to the rebellion against the authoritarian tradition of the church, monarchy, and feudalism (pg.
73, Newhall). Wigman freed dancefrom its slave like overtone with music and reestablished its
independence of an absolute language (pg. 7, Newhall). Wigman choose to look within and present

Nolde introduced Wigman to her second teacher Rudolf Von Laban. Wigman s goal, as with other
expressionist painters and fellow artists, was to reveal a new world of emotion and the mysterious
motivation underlying human behavior (pg. 16, Newhall). She took influence from Sigmund Fred
s discovery of the subconscious. Wigman wanted to unsettle the viewer, while taking the dancer and
audience to a transcendent, ritualistic inspired place. Mary Anne Santos Newhall went onto to state,
For Wigman and her cohorts, this flight into archaic rituals seemed at once regressive, progressive,
and an act of rebellion against their middle class beginnings (pg. 17). Her dance style was striking,
rough, and disturbing all leading to uncover the spirit through the absolute

Why Is Banquo Important In Macbeth
To be sensible is to be realistic, reasonable, and rational. Many characters throughout various
writing pieces are portrayed as sensible. Amongst all, one of them is the Thane of Lochaber. In
Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Banquo is much more sensible in contrast to Macbeth because he
questions unnatural events, seeks help from light, and reacts to murder smartly. To begin, when
Banquoand Macbethencounter the witches, Banquo asks the more realistic question when Macbeth
wants to get more deceitful information. Banquo says Good sir, why do you start and seem to fear
/ Things that do sound so fair? I the name of truth,/ Are ye fantastical, or that indeed/ Which
actually ye show? (I.iii.54 56). Banquo is logical and asks the important question of whether the
witches are illusions trying to fool them or not.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And to be king/ Stands not within the prospect of belief,/ No more than to be Cawdor. Say from
whence/ You owe this strange intelligence? Or why. Upon this blasted heath you stop our way
/ With such prophetic greeting? Speak, I charge you, (I.iii.76 81). The fact that Banquo asks of
the witch s realism, while Macbeth trusts their words, proves that Banquo is a sensible character.
Furthermore, Banquo seeks help from holy beings to hide his desires, unlike Macbeth, who
calls out to darkness. Banquo states, A heavy summons lies like lead upon me,/ And yet I would
not sleep. Merciful powers,/ Restrain in me the cursed thoughts that nature/ Gives way to in
repose! (II.i.7 10). Banquo chooses to pray to angels to keep away his nightmares. In contrast,
Macbeth is unwise because he calls out for darkness to hide light from seeing his motives. Stars
hide your fires;/ let not light see my black and deep desires, (!.iv.57 58). Banquo s plead to angels is
a more sensible appeal then to Macbeth s asking darkness to hide away light, an unwise

Immanuel Kant On Good Will Analysis
Immanuel Kant writes about good will and according to him, good will is very objective. He
states that the only thing that is undoubtedly good in the world is the good will itself. Other
qualities like wealth, intelligence and bravery, for example, are characteristics in a person that
can be used for good or evil. Good will, on the other hand, is unquestionably good because even
though it might not bring positive results at all times, the good will in itself was always there
and that person was driven by good and pure motivations all along regardless if the end result
was good or not. In addition, monetary compensation for a good action would not make a good
action pure because that person was motivated by external elements instead of his or her own
good will. Furthermore, as human beings we possess obligations of good will and these
obligations are called duties . For example, all people should help somebody... Show more content

Regardless of what the final result might be, good will should always have the intention to do good
without any external factors influencing the person to do a good deed. To a certain extent, this ties
into the utilitarian philosophy because if good deeds cause pleasure, and pleasure leads to
happiness, then that means that the society as a whole is happier and therefore they are more
utile and more prosperous. When it comes to defining good will , Kant seems to be taking an
approach very similar to the one found in the Bible, so in everything, do to others what you would
have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew, 7:12) At the end of the
day, the intended purpose of these teachings, is to help us live a better and more fulfilling lifestyle
by helping those in need and understand why we do these actions. What motivates us to do these
actions? Why do we do them? These are all questions that not only Immanuel Kant intend to answer
but the Bible as

Harvard Case Study Analysis
Harvard Case Review and Analysis
1. Jeff Immelt s strategies for GE were solid in a theoretical sense. The company should have been
delivering above average returns and seen all the positives that he preached about it. The reason
this did not happen and they faced some humiliation in 2008 until 2010 were due to GE Capital.
Immelt thought that they were diversified enough to survive the economic downturn. However
this proved to be wrong. In an interview for BusinessWeek magazine David Magee, author of Jeff
Immelt and the New GE Way, spoke on what was going wrong for GE. He believes that Immelt
and GE did not correctly predict how bad the financial downturn was going to be. By missing that
their beliefs that they were diversified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I agree with what the analysts have said and that the most important thing for GE is to get their
stock prices back up. Immelt is trying to do so without selling GE Capital. I believe that in order
to get their prices back up they need to downsize GE Capital and have less money tied up in
assets that are in this very volatile market, especially real estate. This will help build confidence
in investors that they will not see huge losses if the economy takes another turn for the worst.
Until that happens I do not see GE getting back on track with Immelt s plans of growth and
profit. 2. GE s corporate strategy is one of moderate to high level of diversification. More
specifically one that is related linked. Most people call them a conglomerate or a company
made up of very different companies all operating in different industries. However GE s CEO
Jeff Immelt sees it differently. He doesn t see a conglomerate he sees a company that is
diversified over many industries, but one that works together towards a common goal. You can
see that in the way that research and development in one of their industries is used to improve
their product or service in a different part of the company. By having all of these differentiated
industries working together under the name of GE they have been very successful company. Now
the situation is changing. People are seeing GE struggle especially GE Capital. To make

Summary of the Book Divergent
In post apocalyptic Chicago, the city is divided into five factions. Each faction is composed of
qualities the members believe will eradicate the qualities that once led the world to destruction.
The Abnegation believe in selflessness and humility, they always put others before themselves and
they live to serve for the greater good. Members of Abnegation are chosen to be on the council to
make decisions for the greater good of the city. The Erudite factionseeks knowledge, because they
believe that ignorance paved the road for destruction of the past government. Candor seeks to
always tell the truth, no matter the consequences. The people of Amity are peace seekers who
will do anything to maintain tranquility throughout the city. The Dauntless members are brave
and believe in conquering their fears. Beatrice Prior is born to an Abnegation family and she is
always instructed to put other people s needs before her own. She is only allowed to look in a
mirror every few months when her mother cuts her hair and she wears the same dull, gray
clothes as the rest of her faction. Beatrice admires how the Abnegation society works and how
selfless her mother and her brother, Caleb, can be, but she never truly feels like she belongs. She
looks to the Dauntless crowd with admiration as she passes them by and often finds herself
thinking of the life she would have as a part of their faction. Once a year, the sixteen year olds
from each faction are administered an aptitudetestto

Rene Descartes Essay
Rene Descartes
Rene Descartes was a math philosopher, he was born in Toures, on March 31
1596, and he died at Stockholm on February 11 1650. His father was forced to spend half the
year at Rennes, where he was a councilman. The rest of the time he spent with his family of Les
Cartes at La Haye. Rene was the second child out of four kids. At the age of eight, he was sent to
the Jesuit School at La Fleche. The school had very good education and discipline. On account of
his delicate health, he was permitted to lie in bed until late in the mornings. In 1647, he visited
Pascal, he told himself that the only way to do good work in math, and to keep his health was to

The values of x and y determined the co coordinates of a number of points which forms a curve, of
which the equation f(x,y)=0 has a geometrical property.
Rene said that a point in a space could be determined by three co coordinates. Rene pointed out the
very important facts that two or more curves can be referred to one and the same system of co
coordinates, and that the points in which two curves intersect can be determined by finding the
roots common to their equations. Rene wrote three Geometric books. The first two are about
analytical geometry, and the third is an analysis of algebra that was current then. Rene also paid
particular attention to the theory of tangents to curves. Back then the current definition of a tangent
at a point was a straight line through the point such that between it and the curve no other straight
line could be drawn, that is the straight line of closet contact.
Rene described his theory by giving the general rule for drawing tangents and normals to a
roulette. The method that Rene used to find the tangent or normal at any point of a given curve
was he determined the center and radius of a circle, which should cut the curve in two consecutive
points. The tangent to the circle at that point will be the required tangent to the curve.

Malaria Essay
Malaria
Malaria parasites have been with us since the beginning of time, and fossils of mosquitoes up to
thirty million years old show that malaria s vector has existed for just as long. The parasites
causing malaria are highly specific, with man as the only host and mosquitoes as the only vector.
Every year,
300,000,000 people are affected by malaria, and while less than one percent of these people die,
there are still an estimated 1,500,000 deaths per year. While
Malaria was one of the first infectious diseases to be treated successfully with a drug, scientist are
still looking for a cure or at least a vaccination today
(Cann, 1996). Though many people are aware that malaria is a disease, they are

Here, sexual forms of the parasite develop in the stomach of the Anopheles mosquito completing the
parasites life cycle (Herman, 1996).
People infected malaria have several symptoms including fever, chills, headaches, weakness, and an
enlarged spleen (Herman, 1996). The amount of time for symptoms to appear differs depending on
the form of the parasite. Those infected with Plasmodium falciparum experience symptoms after
about twenty four hours, those infected with Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale produce
symptoms after a forty eight hour interval, and after seventy two hours
Plasmodium malariae begin causing fever and chills (Cann, 1996).
Most malaria cases seem to cluster in the tropical climate areas extending into the subtropics, and
malaria is especially endemic in Africa. In
1990 eighty percent of all reported cases were in Africa, while the remainder of most cases came
from nine countries: India, Brazil, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka,
Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. Globally, the disease circulates in almost one
hundred countries causing up to 1,500,000 deaths annually (Cann, 1996).
Because there is no definite cure for malaria, scientists are trying their hardest to contain the
parasite to where it now exists. The range of a vector from a suitable habitat is fortunately limited
to a maximum

Children s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

one is benefiting from this usage in some way. Clearly, In today s society, social media has
become a major part of everyday life. Though this has been a change, a question still arises.
Should preteens have access to social media? Though there are a few downsides to media, there
are also plenty of benefits as well. Currently, The Children s Online Privacy Protection Act
(COPPA) prevents children and preteens under thirteen from using social media. This law took
action in April of 2000. Things have changed and so should this law. At first, when social media
was new, people were excited about the new thing and didn t think about consequences. Now,

The Amendment And The Rights Amendment
Possibly the most conversational amendment to every make it s way through the Senate and the
House was the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972. The Equal Rights Amendment was, introduced
through the twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, and sixties without success (Schneir, 369). Various
organizations such as the National Woman s Party (those who proposed it), National Organization
for Women, the Women s Department of the United Auto Workers, and many other feminists
worked most if not all of their lives to pass this specific amendment. In the early 1970 s, the
House approved the amendment by a large ratio of 354 to 23. Additionally, in 1972, the Senate
also passed the amendment by another shocking ratio of 84 to 8. Unfortunately, the amendment did
not pass by its deadline of June 30th, 1982 by only thirty five states approving it for ratification by
at least thirty eight states (Schneir, 370). There were various reasons why the amendment did not
pass, and Miriam Schneir discussed several of these in the section Equal Rights Amendmentin the
book Feminism in Our Time. Though the Equal Rights Amendment had various dedicated
supporters working to pass it, it also had several Anti Equal Rights Amendment working to make
sure it DID NOT pass. One key figure in this Anti Equal Rights Amendment was Phyllis Schlafly.
Schlafly argued that the passing of the Equal Rights Amendment would cause there to be a boom in
the creation of unisex bathrooms. She argued that bathrooms

  • 2. Digital Music And Its Effects On The Music Industry In July 2011, Spotify launched in the United States. This program not only had the ability to stream music for its listeners, but it was also free. As long as the artists were featured on this program, users could listen to any of their songs at any time. At first, this was only restricted to desktop computer usage, but since then Spotify has launched its app available for mobile devices, further stretching this power of free and instant media at any time. Although this may sound great to users like you and me, the people who ultimately suffer are the artists that put there music out there on Spotify. By allowing us to listen to their music for free, the profits from CD s and iTunes digital music sales have begun to decrease. This means that artists who have their media on Spotify overall do not make the profit that they normally should. Since Spotify is a relatively new addition to the music industry, I will be focusing on the effects it is having on sales regarding teenagers since they are the highest population that currently uses Spotify because of it s appearance in their generation. According to a paper by Abhijit Sen, a renowned professor with a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Cambridge, titled Music in the Digital Age: Musicians and Fans Around the World Come Together on the Net, statistics show that the music industry and the major record labels are in a slow slump (Sen 8). Ever since Apple created iTunes, the number of CD purchases have been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Robots will play a very important role in our future and they are already are. According to Apple co founder Steve Wozniak states that a robotic future powered by artificial intelligence would be scary and very bad for people and that robots would get rid of the slow humans , Wozniak has staged a U turn and says he now thinks robots taking over would be good for the human race. Big companies like Google are signing a 60 year, $1.16 billion lease Moffett Naval Airfield in San Francisco the historic Hangar One as part of its expansion into robotics, aviation and space exploration. Kyrre Glette, Associate Professor at Oslo University s Department of Informatics states In the future, robots must be able to solve tasks in deep mines on distant planets, in radioactive disaster areas, in hazardous landslip areas and on the sea bed beneath the Antarctic. These environments are so extreme that no human being can cope. Everything needs to be automatically controlled. For an example a robot is entering the wreckage of a nuclear power plant. It finds a staircase that no one has thought of. The robot takes a picture. The picture is analyzed. The arms of one of the robots is fitted with a printer. This produces a new robot, or a new part for the existing robot, which enables it to negotiate the stairs. This is the primary example of what the future could hold with robotic technology. You can believe those who say robots will over run the world in the future, but robots have multiple purposes that can do everything and will benefit us. Therefore, robots will play a very important part in our future to do the impossible. Breakthroughs will come quickly for robotic innovations. Driverless cars and new space information may take decades to come, while other completely unexpected robotic applications could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Elements Of A Great Speech By Martin Luther King Jr. Life is always easier when there is a way to find the answer. A cake is easier to bake with a recipe to follow, and a great speech needs a formula or list of aspects to include. Good morning Mrs Roche and students. For my presentation today I will explore a formula I have created that contains all the elements of a great speech. I produced this formula while I was studying some of the work of one of the best speakers and leaders of all time: Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist Minister, Activist, Humanitarian, and leader in the African American Civil Rights Movement. He was known for his amazing speaking skills and visionary speeches, which he used to successfully make a non violent movement against segregation and injustice during his time. He was a great speaker and a great leader. So what better of a leader than Martin Luther King Jr to help identify what key aspects need to be put into the formula. ... • 7. Cost-Benefit Analysis of Arbitration Cost benefit analysis of arbitration Introduction Arbitration is legal technique used to resolve any disputes outside of the courts. Arbitration allows for speedy and cheap resolution of any disputes, the parties involved in a dispute agree to appoint a third person (arbitrator) who will hear their testimonies, and look into the evidence they provide. The arbitrator s decision cannot be challenged in a law court as it is considered final and the parties involved have to accept the decision (Brams Merrill, 1986). There are only very limited circumstances where the decision of an arbitrator can be challenged, and this is mostly if there can be proof from one of the parties showing that the arbitrator was biased in their decision or ruling. The chosen arbitrator will be an experienced person in the area of the dispute. Arbitration Costs The costs involved in normal arbitration are minimal and the amount of time the arbitrator takes in order to reach a decision is short as compared to normal litigation cases. The costs are minimal as there is no need for judges and juries to be involved. Some arbitration decisions may drag on for longer just as the normal litigation cases, and this would increase the costs incurred in preparation for the arbitration. The arbitrator s fees vary depending on the amounts involved in the suite and also the country where the arbitration will take place. Considering that the deals the firm is signing are for $1 million then the fees will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is an interesting argument and this source can be used to explain feelings Wilde may have had at the time, and he portrayed these thoughts through Dorian s relationships with other characters in the novel. In late modern society, we are always available. But are we really missing out on a lot of important stuff, and is this necessarily a bad thing? There is an immediate tension between Dickens way of thinking and Gradgrind s and M Choakumchild s. Gradgrind and M Choakumchild call the children vessels and do not use names but numbers. M Choakumchild is introduced later in the second chapter; he is one of the one hundred and forty schoolmasters. Instead of the way he looked being described, like Gradgrind, his intelligence was described. The subjects and skills that he studied and has knowledge about were listed, e.g. biography , algebra and vocal music . M Choakumchild knows a lot about these subjects because they are full of facts and imagination is not really needed to know about them. He believes that fact is all that the children need to know and like Gradgrind does not believe in freethinking. M Chockumchild is the one who will teach the children how to be like in school life and social life. Gradgrind and M Choakumchild are presented as plain people who do not like change. They have only one straight forward idea of how the education system should be. They both see children as empty vessels and believe that they should be seen and not heard. • 11. Matthew Arnold Dover Beach Tone Meraf Degaga Mrs. Pollack English 102 March 20th, 2015 Dover Beach Analysis The poem, Dover Beach, written by Matthew Arnold compares human faith to a sea s roaring waves crashing against a shore. The speaker is someone living in a house among Dover Beach on the coast of New England s northern sea. The speaker is talking with someone else in the house as Arnold writes, Come to the window, sweet is the night air! (Line 6)! Also the person being spoken to can later be interpreted as a wife or husband as the speaker states, Ah, love, let us be true (Line 29). The first stanza has a positive beginning by describing the scenery of the beach, the full moon, the moon s light glimmering onto the sea, and the sight of the French coast in the distance. The intense imagery puts the reader in a dynamic scene at the peaceful beach, watching the waves brush the pebbles back and forth onto the shore. The tone in the first stanza may seem peaceful; however, it depicts stillness for the reader. As the speaker watches the waves move back and forth, it is just a rinse and repeat process that is observed over again. The stanza may begin on a positive note, but ends on a negative note as the speaker states, The eternal note of sadness in (Line 14). Human misery begins to set into ... Some individuals feel that the flag has a right to be flown all over the state; while, others can see it removed completely. The purpose of this paper is to discuss in detail four important topics as follows: (1) the history of the Confederate flag, (2) the economic impact, (3) state agencies and municipalities stance and (4) the Legislative position concerning the issue. The flag originated as a banner, but in today s society is recognized as a symbol. The symbol of the flag represents the Confederate war. Because of strong emotional ties Confederate ancestors have a particular perception of the flag. However, everyone does not share the same opinion, some perceptions are different and often conflicts with what others understand the flag to mean (Coski, 2015). During the war in the year of 1862, Southerners were known as Confederates. Therefore, they disconnected themselves from symbols of old, which was the Confederate national flags and adopted the symbol of the Confederate battle flag. The flag perhaps, inextricably intertwined with states rights, slavery, and the Confederacy which gave the battle flags a new meaning. You intensely obsess over your appearance and body image, often for many hours a day. Your perceived flaw causes you significant distress, and your obsession impacts your ability to function in your daily life. You may seek out numerous cosmetic procedures or excessively exercise to try to fix your perceived flaw, but you re never satisfied. Body dysmorphic disorder is also known as dysmorphophobia, the fear of having a deformity. Although the exact cause of BDD is still unclear, experts believe it is related to problems with serotonin, one of the brain s chemical neurotransmitters. Poor regulation of serotonin also plays a role in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and other anxiety disorders, as well as depression Some people may be more prone to problems with serotonin balance, including those with family members who have problems with anxiety or depression. This may help explain why some people develop BDD but others don t. Cultural messages can also play a role in BDD by reinforcing somebody s concerns about appearance. Critical messages or unkind teasing about appearance as someone is growing up may also contribute to a person s sensitivity to BDD. The advantages of the laparoscopic approach include a shorter hospital stay because of less postoperative pain. Laparoscopy allows us to replace the shunts in the abdominal cavity under direct visual guidance and cut them to appropriate size if necessary. In addition, laparoscopy is a diagnostic tool that can be used to exclude any other intra abdominal process possibly causing abdominal pain. Laparoscopy can be repeated several times in case of further complications because it is less invasive. This is not the case with laparotomy, which is more traumatic (3). The potential problem that has been raised is retrograde leakage of carbon dioxide into the ventricle. This was not recognized in our series and has not been reported previously. A study was conducted using two groups with different rehearsal techniques and each were then asked to recall from a list of words that had been read out as precisely as possible. There has been considerable criticism of this theory however as Baddeley questioned, Is the levels approach based on false assumptions . The idea of maintenance rehearsal is one that many people are still uncertain of. Psychologists such as Atkinson and Shiffrin have also made assumptions on memory based on maintenance rehearsal yet whether this is a false concept is yet to be discovered. Introduction Craik and Lockhart (1972) suggested that memory is just a product of the complexity of handling data and there is no clear variance between short term memory and long term memory. This theory then resulted in different theories being brought forward in order to prove this statement correct or incorrect. Craik and Lockhart then suggested the concept of shallow processing. This style of processing usually takes one of two forms: Phonemic processing, which is encoded by sound or structural processing which is encoded visually. Shallow processing only encompasses maintenance rehearsal and leads to fairly short term holding of information. On a number of occasions through the correspondence, Lily attempts to treat Palmer as though the two of them are close, intimate friends. Lily even goes as far as saying to Palmer, I hope you stay for years, with me (Marks 113). If this is not pressure enough, Lily goes on to guilt Palmer by proclaiming, You cannot leave me alone in this merciless world (Marks 113). When faced with these remarks, she needed to address Lily s outlook on their relationship to make sure Lily understood that their interaction had to remain professional. You say that one of your reasons for wishing to be in Durban is that you want to see more of me, but have you ever asked yourself whether I wish do see more of you? As a matter of fact I do not. Your romantic and self centered imagination has built up for you a picture in which you are to be my devoted and intimate friend. Now you must forgive me for saying that this is all nonsense. Even if you were a European girl of your age it would still be nonsense (Marks 136). Palmer makes it very clear that Lily s feelings for her are simply not reciprocated. Palmer says she does not wish to see Lily, and that Lily s perception of their connection is just nonsense . Critics will argue that Palmer s tone here is too aggressive though. • 38. Causes Of Tyranny Henry VIII, Joseph Stalin, Ivan IV, Adolf Hitler, Kim Jong II, and more are all tyrants who inflicted tyranny on their people. Throughout history many tyrants have oppressed their citizens with unfair and harsh treatment and have gotten away with it. Tyranny is known as a cruel, unreasonable, or arbitrary use of power or control inflicted by an oppressive government or ruler. Even though this sadistic behavior continues today, it doesn t in the United Statesof America. In 1775 to 1783, the American Revolutionary War, also known as the U.S. War of Independence, took place. This was a conflict that arose form growing tensions between residents of Great Britain s 13 North American colonies and the tyrannical British Crown. In response to the callous treatment, a group of colonial delegates (including George Washington of Virginia, John and Samuel Adams or Massachusetts, Patrick Henry of Virginia, and john jay of New York) met in Philadelphia in September 1774 to give voice to their grievances against the British Crown, which is formally known as the First Continental Congress. By June 1776, with the Revolutionary War in full swing, a growing majority of the colonists had come to favor independence from Britain resulting in the continental Congress drafting the Declaration of Independence on July 4. Amongst all, one of them is the Thane of Lochaber. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Banquo is much more sensible in contrast to Macbeth because he questions unnatural events, seeks help from light, and reacts to murder smartly. To begin, when Banquoand Macbethencounter the witches, Banquo asks the more realistic question when Macbeth wants to get more deceitful information. Banquo says Good sir, why do you start and seem to fear / Things that do sound so fair? I the name of truth,/ Are ye fantastical, or that indeed/ Which actually ye show? (I.iii.54 56). The fact that Banquo asks of the witch s realism, while Macbeth trusts their words, proves that Banquo is a sensible character. • 46. Immanuel Kant On Good Will Analysis Immanuel Kant writes about good will and according to him, good will is very objective. He states that the only thing that is undoubtedly good in the world is the good will itself. Other qualities like wealth, intelligence and bravery, for example, are characteristics in a person that can be used for good or evil. Good will, on the other hand, is unquestionably good because even though it might not bring positive results at all times, the good will in itself was always there and that person was driven by good and pure motivations all along regardless if the end result was good or not. In addition, monetary compensation for a good action would not make a good action pure because that person was motivated by external elements instead of his or her own good will. Regardless of what the final result might be, good will should always have the intention to do good without any external factors influencing the person to do a good deed. To a certain extent, this ties into the utilitarian philosophy because if good deeds cause pleasure, and pleasure leads to happiness, then that means that the society as a whole is happier and therefore they are more utile and more prosperous. When it comes to defining good will , Kant seems to be taking an approach very similar to the one found in the Bible, so in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew, 7:12) At the end of the day, the intended purpose of these teachings, is to help us live a better and more fulfilling lifestyle by helping those in need and understand why we do these actions. Rene wrote three Geometric books. The first two are about analytical geometry, and the third is an analysis of algebra that was current then. Back then the current definition of a tangent at a point was a straight line through the point such that between it and the curve no other straight line could be drawn, that is the straight line of closet contact. Rene described his theory by giving the general rule for drawing tangents and normals to a roulette. The method that Rene used to find the tangent or normal at any point of a given curve was he determined the center and radius of a circle, which should cut the curve in two consecutive points. The amount of time for symptoms to appear differs depending on the form of the parasite. Those infected with Plasmodium falciparum experience symptoms after about twenty four hours, those infected with Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale produce symptoms after a forty eight hour interval, and after seventy two hours Plasmodium malariae begin causing fever and chills (Cann, 1996).
