Guvnors play written by Richard Bean, was based of the traditional Commedia
dell Arte play The Servant of Two Masters written by Carlo Goldoni. I planned to
explore the extent of how much the play was improvised and the extent of how
much it was scripted and planned. I looked at why Commedia dell Arte used
improvisation and the approach of incorporating improvisation and lazzi into a
performance. I went about doing so by comparing the characters and the scripts of
Bean s One Man, Two Guvnors to Goldoni s The Servant of Two Masters. I
researched the role of Improvisation and Lazzi in traditional commedia dell Arte and
compared it to its role in One Man, Two Guvnors. I decided to carry out my research
by surveying audience members who had viewed the production of One Man, Two
Guvnors , and finding out how the incorporation of improvisation and lazzi

There she shares with them stories about her past and her present as well as they
help with her chore of removing the eyes from a hogs head. From the way she
talked about her preparation and canning of the souse meat as she called it, to her
way of speaking in general, anyone who s grown up in the more rural areas of West
Virginia would almost feel like their reading a transcript of their own grandma s
words. Her generosity is not to be missed either. Even though she only has the food
she can grow herself or from her neighbors own generosities, she still found some
to share with the students for a meal. She also talks about, near the end of the
interview, how she would always make corn pones (corn bread) for her father to
take with him to when he went to the city and for the neighbors when they would
come to visit. Her kindness and generosity doesn t go unreturned by her neighbors
though. As her description of the hog s head shows. Her neighbors obviously
really like her, enough to give her a hogs head with a surplus of meat, one that
most people would save for themselves, much less give away for free and refusing
any payment at that. It can also be said that she is not too proud to accept help from
others, a trait that is very often thought to be possessed by those living in the more

Can a humanistic model of counselling be integrated with a cognitive (or cognitive
behavioural) one? Discuss with reference to Rogers and either Beck or Egan.
In the first part of this essay I will summarise the main features of humanistic
counselling and the cognitive approach. Rogers used a humanistic person centred
approach to therapy and I will look at his view of people, their potential, what goes
wrong and what can help them to change. Egan was a cognitive therapist and I will
address the above points in relation to his Skilled Helper model. Similarities and key
differences in theory, practise and value base between the two approaches will then
be discussed.

Within Humanistic therapy the potential is there for the re integration of self and
organism, thus

enabling self actualisation to take place. A phrase used by Kierkegaard the first
modern existentialist to be that self which one truly is I feel expresses the idea of
self actualisation very well, indicating the potential for growth and change believed
by Rogers to be inherent within all of us. Rogers puts forward the view that the client
held in the therapeutic relationship, when given the freedom to fully experience his
feelings realises his potential to experience being (increased self awareness) and
becoming (self actualisation).
What goes wrong, thus bringing a client into therapy? Rogers considers the problem
to be lack of balance in a person s life, conflict between what has been internalised as
belief, conditions of worth and values, and what the person is presently experiencing.
Dissolution of protective defence mechanisms that had previously enabled the client
to function in their daily life, leads as they experience a life changing event to
dysfunction with mental, emotional and sometimes physical disintegration. To
reverse this process and bring about reintegration and balance through humanistic
therapy, the relationship needs to be firmly established and the core conditions of the
therapeutic relationship modelled by the therapist. Within
