the age when she knew Caroline, her darky nurse. At the end of the story, she calls out for
Caroline, probably because Caroline was the one who would have helped her when she was a
child and in trouble, but it is poignant that she is described as being young, and in the last
seconds of her life, she reverts back to the childhood that she still resembles, even after all her
