In the book The Stranger, by Albert Camus, the use of absurdity is at a great extent. Throughout the
book, Camus gives plenty of absurd scenarios that are carried out by the characters. This essay will
point out many of the parts from the book which are great examples of this topic. In the beginning of
the book, the main character and narrator, Meursault, is notified that his mother has passed away. She
lived in an old people s home because she was sick and Meursault could not afford to take care of her.
The absurd part about this event, is the fact that Meursault did not even shed a tear at his own mother s
funeral. Another ridiculous part is that he did not even know her age! He was asked by one of the
undertakers, Was she old? And Meursault replied, Fairly, then after stating, because I didn t know the

Around the turn of the nineteenth century, new musical forms such as ragtime and jazz saw
development in urbanized areas particularly through the influence of the African American
community. These contemporary genres compelled the evolution of dance toward expression that was
more exuberant with exaggerated body movements (Edmondson). By the 1920s, this led to the
creation of the Charleston and the Lindy Hop, the direct predecessors to Swing. In particular, the
Savoy Ballroom, opened in 1926 in New York, was central to this development because there dancers

A Christmas Memory , an eloquently written account of Truman Capote s last Christmas with his dear
friend, Sook. The story is set during the 1930s in a rural southern section of Alabama. Capote recalls
his last Christmas with Sook, who is his sixty something (3) year old cousin who has childlike
tendencies. Sook refers to Capote as Buddy throughout the story. Buddy and Sook share a home with
other relatives, who throughout the story, berate them with harsh words and are overall unkind.
However, the relatives unknowingly strengthen their bond and aid in forging an unbreakable
friendship between the two. Capote manages to pen a captivating memoir of his last Christmas with
Sook using an engaging writing style with an enthralling use of vivid language.
One of the ways Capote captivates his readers is by using vivid language to make the reader feel
joyful, giddy and excited. My dancing shadow rollicks on the walls; our voices rock the chinaware;
we giggle: as if unseen hands were tickling us (23). Notably this passage is composed by giving the
reader a sense of silliness as we imagine the auditory impulsivity of loud singing. Capote s whimsical
language takes a step further with his use of ...unseen hands were tickling us (23) to illustrate the
feeling of Buddy and Sook s giddiness. Another way he uses imagery is with, ...the beginnings of
dawn splash us like cold water... (36). As a result, his passage allows the reader to feel suddenly
overwhelmed. Capote wants to grasp the urgency of waking up Christmas morning and capture the
excitement of not wanting to make waste of any time. Capote uses vivid language to make us feel
cheerful; likewise, he also uses it to make us feel the heaviness of heartache within the household.
Capote s use of language equally portrays a sense of misery and somberness. For example, during the
whiskey scene, the relatives in the household erupt into the room with, eyes that scold, tongues that
scald (24). The verbiage used is sharp and graphic. Notably, in the same passage, the relatives say,
shame! scandal! humiliation! kneel, pray, beg the Lord! (24). Above all, these three things are of the

debilitating disease called Pompe disease, was hard to comprehend. Being told that their children have
only months to live due to the fact that there was no medicine on the market to combat the disease,
John decided to quit his marketing executive job to find a cure and make a drug that will save them.
He invested himself and his life s savings in a startup biotechnology company that grew from 27
million dollars to 137.5 million dollars. There were many challenges he faced throughout the entire
story line, yet he continued to persevere which ultimately paid off. One of the biggest hardships he
faced was after the drug was about to get tested. He was told that the drug would only be tried on
babies that were less than six months old and that his two children would not be included in the
clinical trial. To hear that his children were not going to in fact receive the drug after all this time and
effort was crushing, yet he insisted to find a way that they would get it. The scientist concluded that it
would be good research to see if the medicine worked in siblings, and they made an exception to let
