Shopping Mall Wi-Fi
Sample Design Ideas for a robust System
Why ? To Wi-Fi
• Next time you’re in a shopping mall, take a minute to count
the number of people tapping something into their iPhones
or Android smartphones. Making updates to Facebook, e-
mailing photos, and even checking product reviews before
making a big purchase are as common as chatting with
friends via cell phone while shopping.
• Like airports and cafés, an increasing number of retailers
are offering Wi-Fi as an amenity, so customers will have a
better shopping experience and spend more time in the
store—regardless of whether cellular companies can
deliver a reliable data signal indoors. "Consumers expect to
be connected wherever they are," “Shoppers are
embracing the use of Wi-Fi in malls."
Wi-Fi Application Goal
• A. Wi-Fi for shopping customers only is the
easy design and install. Access Points such as
our CAP2405N MIMO 500mw AP will only
need be deployed in the hallways at a 150-200
meter frequency, you can go up to 500 meters
between each one as the standard connection
between a Laptop or I-pad is 250 meters .
Since you target only hallway users this is
considered LOS , line of sight.
Con’t
• B. Wi-Fi for shopping customers and Retail
store coverage requires more Access Points
such as our CAP2405N MIMO 500mw AP to be
deployed in the hallways at a 20-40 meter
frequency, The reason for this is to penetrate
deep inside the retail stores. Consider that the
AP signal may not be outside every store so it
has to pass through several walls and reach
the back of each store. This is now considered
a mixture of LOS and NLOS.
CAP2405N ACCESS POINT
 2.4GHz, 500mW,
802.11NGB
 Advanced MIMO
technology: 300Mbps
(2T2R)
 Multi-functional:
AP/Bridge/repeater
 Powerful network
security with 64/128-bit
WEP, WPA-PSK,
WPA2-PSK,
WPA/WPA2 encryption
 Auto MDI/ MDIX
 Support VLAN & SNMP
 Watchdog function no
lock-up
 Gigabit Auto-negotiation
LAN port for LAN
connection
Support power POE , not
need local electrical outlet .
Wi-Fi Performance V 3G
One may ask why 3G works so good
inside malls, Airports, and other large
venues . The main reason is that there
are multiple 3G antennas and
transmitters also installed inside these
places, Its not working from a Tower
several miles away, its inside next to
your cell phone.
So same if you expect Wi-Fi to perform
you need to provide adequate AP
installs for performance coverage.
When there are several competing Cell
company's they may actually pay the
mall a rental fee to be allowed to
install their MINI antennas to enhance
their service coverage.
They also may want to share your Wi-
Fi Access Points for Wi-Fi hand off ,
again allowing a faster experience for
their clients and off loading burden
from their network.
In the next slides you will see a Mall
install, the system was done using last
years Model above, now all current
designs use our new CAP2405N
300Mbps 500mw AP below
In this Shopping mall they are actually receiving
monthly rental revenue from 3 Competing cell
company's, to enhance their signal coverage, This
added income paid for the Shopping malls Wi-Fi
Always Remember Wi-Fi Survey for
channel and signal quality checks
The lower the
dBm value the
stronger the
signal. So
anything below
72dBm is
acceptable , -
50dBm is
excellent !!!
