1) Define the following terms and concepts:
iv) Context – The text in which a word or passage appears and
which helps ascertain its meaning
v) Dialect – A variety of language (specifically, often a spoken
variety) that is characteristic of a particular area, community or
group, often with relatively minor differences in vocabulary, style,
spelling and pronunciation.
vi) Proposition - the term proposition refers to either:
(a) the "content" or "meaning" of a meaningful declarative sentence
or,
(b) the pattern of symbols, marks, or sounds that make up a
meaningful declarative sentence. The meaning of a proposition also
includes having the quality or property of being either true or false.
2) Write down two sentences that may bring out two different meanings of
the following sentences:
a) The chicken is ready to eat.
We can eat the chicken now.
The chicken wants to eat now.
b) He greeted the girl with a smile.
He smile and greet the girl.
He greet the girl who is smiling.
c) He turned over the field.
4) Can different expressions have the same
referent? Give an example.
