This document discusses how physical factors like sea level rise, sediment particle size, beach slope, and wave exposure affect benthic invertebrate assemblages in estuaries. It finds that the abundance, biomass, and oxygen consumption of intertidal macrofauna and meiofauna are significantly impacted by interactions among these physical factors. Specifically, mud flats have lower wave exposure and finer sediments leading to higher macrofauna biomass, while sandy shores have higher wave exposure and coarser sediments resulting in lower biomass. Sea level rise is expected to make estuaries less diverse and productive by reducing these metrics.

Coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, delta systems, and coral reefs are increasingly at risk due in large part to
settlement and development along rapidly urbanizing coasts. The resulting degradation of these ecosystems,
especially the degradation of natural infrastructure, increasingly exposes coastal cities and their inhabitants to
more frequent and severe natural hazards and disproportionately impacts poor populations who often rely on these ecosystems for livelihoods, food, and other essential benefits.
Tropical coral reefs cover an area of over 284 000 km2, providing habitat for thousands of species and yielding more than US$ 30 billion annually in global goods and services, such as coastline protection, tourism and food. Corals reefs are now threatened by the increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, while warmer sea temperatures are disturbing the delicate symbiosis between coral organisms and algae. For example, 16 per cent of all tropical coral reefs were killed off by thermal stress during a single extreme El Niño–Southern Oscillation event in 1997–1998. As a result of escalating atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide, more of this gas is being dissolved in the world’s oceans. This has already reduced ocean pH and the trend is projected to continue. Moreover, the altered ocean chemistry is expected to have major corrosive effects on marine ecosystems and to alter the calcification rates of corals, phytoplankton and other species.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

15. Conclusion
Abundance, biomass and oxygen consumption of intertidal macrofauna
and meiofauna are affected significantly by interactions among:
sediment particle size
beach slope
wave exposure
This interaction is probably as important, if not more so, for predicting
changes in beach fauna than the effect of any single physical factor.
If beach physical factors change as predicted, then sea-level rise will make
estuarine intertidal areas less diverse and less productive, through declines
in abundance, biomass, and community metabolism as well as through the
loss of area due to coastal squeeze.
Sea-level rise is likely to lead to changes in ecosystem structure with
generally negative impacts on ecosystem functions and ecosystem
services.
