Since 1991, 80% of districts in India have recorded a declining sex ratio with the state of Punjab being the worst.
States like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana have recorded a more than 50 point decline in the child sex ratio in this period.
Despite these horrific numbers, foetal sex determination and sex selective abortion by unethical medical professionals has today grown into a Rs. 1,000 crore industry (US$ 244 million). Social discrimination against women, already entrenched in Indian society, has been spurred on by technological developments that today allow mobile sex selection clinics to drive into almost any village or neighbourhood unchecked.
The PCPNDT Act 1994 (Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act) was modified in 2003 to target the medical profession - the ‘supply side’ of the practice of sex selection. However non implementation of the Act has been the biggest failing of the campaign against sex selection
According to the latest data available till May 2006, as many as 22 out of 35 states in India had not reported a single case of violation of the act since it came into force. Delhi reported the largest number of violations – 76 out of which 69 were cases of non registration of birth! Punjab had 67 cases and Gujarat 57 cases.
But the battle rages on.

2. General info. The school I visited was AnselmoVillarrubia Elementary School. Located in Aguada. The school principal, Emilia Lorenzo received me. This is the school where I’m doing my practice. I did my observations specifically in the classroom I’m giving classes.
3. things I observed and found at the school Good things Bad things The director is always present and she pass by the halls to supervise classes. School is always clean. Students always use their uniforms. Secretary Club Has a library One problem with the school is that teachers are very competitive to the point of competing among themselves. Another problem is that some printers (5-6) aren’t working and teachers aren’t willing to fix them because they will also have to buy the ink.
13. Programs they use Almost every Friday students have the opportunity of using laptops to do their tasks. Kindergarten and First grade for example know how to work with Max Write (Word), Encarta Kids and Max Paint (Paint). Second and third grade know how to use Max Write (Word), Encarta Kids, Max Paint (Paint) and Power Point (basic). They also know how to insert a picture and insert a movie.
14. ideas of how the problems could be fixed Since the major problem I found was that teachers are too competitive, then I have NO idea of how to fix it, because I can’t change the way they think. It is a personal issue. They all have their own opinion on how to teach and what to teach even though there are standards and expectations to be follow. On the other hand with the printers and computers that aren’t working, teachers should buy them if they really want to use them to create innovative classes. They should also buy ink, because if we wait for the Department of Education to do it then classrooms will stay the same for years.
