ORGANIZATION OF LABOUR ROOM
Organization of labour room
Introduction :
labour room in every delivery point should be
standardized for delivery high quality services
during childbirth . Delivery points with high case
load should be prioritized first for standardization .
When new construction is not for labour rooms .
Every effort should be made to ensure that labour
room space is re-organised as per these guidelines
.
The guidelines for up-gradation
of labour rooms:
1} Space & layout
a)lightening:-
The labour room complex should have adequate lights . Apart
from the ambient light there should also be provision for
additional forms lights for the labour table and examination
tables for procedure.
b)Power supply:-
Every new construction should have adequate
Lights . Apart from the ambient light , there should have
adequate power backup to continue run the radiant warmer
, the light and the fans .
c)Ventilation :-
The labour room should have adequate ventilation . At the
same time , the temperature of the labour room should be

.. A registration desk of size ‘4 X 2’
.. There chairs , one for person manning the desk
and two for pregnant women & her attendant.
C) Triangle / Examination :-
There should be an examination cum triangle room
to first examine the pregnant women who has come
to the facility . The examination room will function as
the triangle area based on risk .
F)staff room ;-
There should be a staff room with the following
specification:-
** A BED PER LAYOUT OFF DUTY STAFF TO
REST
** A CABINAT TO STORE DOCUMENTS.
g) Labour & Delivery area:-
The labour area should have adequate space to
accommodate recommended number of labour beds as
per the layout . The labour beds should be placed in a
way that there is distance of at least 3 from the side wall
. There should be an attached toilet .
h) Newton care area:-
The labour room should have one new born care area for
every 4 labour tablets . The WABC should have the
following:-
- Radiant warmer
- Reservation kit with functional bag & mass
- Mucus extractor
- Shoulder roll
- Paediatric stethoscope
i) Nursing station:-
The labour room should have one nursing station with
- An t-shaped table
- Two plastic / wooden chairs
- A storage cupboard for the storing documents
- A while board on the wall next to the nursing station
j) store room:-
There should be a store room within the complex with
the following specification .
- Cabinet and storage racks for supplies.
2) Equipment & accessories :-
- Radiant warmer :- 1 for 4 labour tables
- Hand held fatal Doppler
- Feta scope
- Autoclaved delivery tray for each labour table .
- Stethoscope .
- protein urea test kit .
- Digital BP meter .
- Thermometer .
- Paediatric resuscitation bag .
- Cheat less forceps.
3) Consumables :-
Consumables such as cotton , thread , gauge , catgut , IV
sets , needles , medicines oral , soap , hand wash , beta dine
solution , number of such items is to review use for 6 months
and making adequate numbers.
- dispose matter & baby supplies
4) Human Resource exclusively for
labour room :-
- At least 1 ANM for every 5 hourly shift at delivery periods .
- 1 or 2 medical others .
- LDR facilities there should be 4 staff nurses per LDR unit 1
for each shift & 1 for back up .
- If deliveries are 100-200 4 staff nurses , 4 ANM “s , 4 Mo ,
1 pediatration , 4 sweepers .
- If deliveries are 200-500 8 staff nurses 4 ANM’s , 4 OBC
specialists , 4 sweepers
- If deliveries are 750-1000 10 staff nurses , 6 ANM’s , 30
5) Practices and protocols:-
a) Protocols for entry to the labour room:-
- entry to the labour room should not direct . It should be
allowed only to the pregnant women , her birth companion,
doctor nurse / ANM on duty .
- entry of male staff should be restricted to only to whose are
on duty
b) protocols for worming in the labour room:-
All the staff should wear PPE at the time of
conducting delivery , other times mask and cap
should be worn .
