Presentation given at the annual RLUK (Research Libraries UK) conference on Thursday 9th March 2017. I discuss the British Library's 'Everything Available' portfolio that aims to transform the Library's research services, in particular around discovery, access and use of content.
Project JASPER (JournAlS are Preserved forevER) is an initiative to preserve open access journals. It was launched on World Preservation Day 2020 and is in response to research* that shows that online journals—both open and closed access journals—can just disappear from the internet. This happens because of a lack of awareness amongst smaller publishers around the need for long-term digital preservation and/or the resources to enroll a journal in a long-term digital preservation scheme. https://doaj.org/preservation/

Presentation given at the Open Repositories 2018 conference in Bozeman, Montana, 6th June 2018. Starting with an assessment of the UK open access repository environment, this presentation asks broader questions about the state of the open repository landscape globally. In response to a report to the UK government on open access, Universities UK have set up a repositories working group to identify issues where common benefit can be delivered and actions that can be taken. In this talk I will combine my own assessment of the repository landscape with a summary of the work of the working group and its recommendations. The presentation will also introduce work underway at the British Library to address some of the issues the working group has identified, including an assessment of a national OA preservation solution and a shared-services repository infrastructure. I will make the case that to realise the benefits of open repositories we need to move away from the model of locally hosted repositories.

The JTHES as Part of the Intelligence Layer for the Sustainability Collection...Access Innovations, Inc.
Presented at the 2015 Data Harmony User Group Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico on February 17, 2015 by Ron Snyder and Sharon Garewal of ITHAKA Labs.
The JSTOR Sustainability Collection, which will launch in 2015, is composed of journals, reports, and working papers selected in consultation with scholars, policy researchers, and subject librarians. The collection features journal titles from academic publishers, scholarly societies, and industry groups, as well as a substantial library of indexed reports and working papers from leading research institutes and university centers. It addresses the emerging interdisciplinary discussion about how the environment and human activities and economic gains can be made durable over the long term. Along with this broad set of content, the collection will feature specialized functionality to support research in this emerging field, including a semantic indexing feature that helps researchers locate related terms and concepts that may have varying names across disciplines.
Ron Snyder, ITHAKA Labs Director of Research and Development, and Sharon Garewal, Senior Metadata Librarian, will discuss how the JSTOR Thesaurus (JTHES) was applied as part of the intelligence layer for the Sustainability collection prototype. This includes adding a facet for sustainability within the JTHES to tag terms as part of the collection, working with SME's across disciplines, and applying the curated terms into a live data portal.
Since the early days of e-resource management, holdings maintenance for electronic resources has been a very time consuming and manual process. While the emergence of electronic resource management systems (ERMS) has improved this process to a significant extent, holdings maintenance tasks remain labor intensive due to the increased volume of electronic content to manage, as well as issues related to metadata quality. To ameliorate many of the problems associated with managing electronic resources, and in recognition of a need for greater accuracy and efficiency, some knowledgebase providers are beginning to offer libraries options to automate holdings maintenance for electronic resources. In 2014, OCLC developed a service to provide automated holdings management for a select group of content providers. Within the WorldCat knowledge base system, library specific holdings for e-book and e-serial collections can be managed within the knowledge base without the need for library staff to manually intervene. At the University of Toronto Libraries, we decided to take OCLC's automated holdings management service for a test-drive. For three vendor packages, we conducted an on-going comparison between the library's holdings list and the title listing supplied by the automated service. This presentation will outline the results of this investigation, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of automated holdings maintenance. The talk will also provide a vision of what the automated holdings management service could look like in the future.

The Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) is a consortium of twenty-one university libraries in the province of Ontario, Canada that collaborates through collective purchasing and shared digital library infrastructure. OCUL's Scholars GeoPortal service (geo.scholarsportal.info) uses Esri software to provide a set of online tools for identifying, exploring, and downloading licensed geospatial datasets for academic research in Ontario. Since 2012, the usage and size of geospatial data collections housed and showcased in Scholars GeoPortal has grown significantly, with more than 220,000 site visits and over 140TB of data, resulting in a number of challenges. This session will introduce the GeoPortal's interface and discuss various data related issues and demands facing the current version of the geoportal, lessons learned, as well as future ideas and plans for continued success.

This presentation discusses how The Keepers Registry and the network of Keepers is attempting to tackle the issue of digital preservation for electronic serials specifically. First identifying the scope of the problem being addressed, it moves on to the successes, in preservation and in measuring that preservation, before moving on to the challenges still to be surmounted. It touches upon some of the specific cases on which this preservation is focussing, including legal deposit and regional library consortia, as well as engagement with OA journals. It finishes with the broader plan of action to help allow the Keepers to accomplish their digital preservation goals, laid out in the statement they issued last August, calling upon all stakeholders in the world of scholarly communication, notably both publishers and research libraries, and setting actions they can take to help in this mission.

While institutional repositories (IRs) often include a built-in searching mechanism and/or are indexed by web search engines, what about our patrons who go straight to the library catalog with their information need? Rather than hope that users will stumble upon the IR from the library website or assume that they will start their research with a Google search, librarians can facilitate greater IR discoverability and usage by integrating its content into the library catalog. With strong teamwork, good communication, and a shared vision, this endeavor helps transform the IR and library catalog from separate, siloed platforms into a more cohesive collections package.
At the University of San Diego, librarians and administrators across three departments -- Technical Services, Systems, and Archives / Special Collections / Digital Initiatives --recognized this opportunity and came together to share information and work in concert to explore and enact the benefits of auto-harvesting IR content into the library catalog. Driven by a vision of providing enhanced discoverability and access, as well as promoting the IR as a whole and enriching the catalog, the team members worked cooperatively to identify specific IR collections appropriate for harvest, investigate technical logistics, consult outside vendors (including Innovative and bepress), and experiment with implementation.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
