Lady Fatima (sa) was the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (sa) and Khadija (sa). She was born in Makkah and displayed piety and faith from a young age. She married Imam Ali (sa) in a simple wedding arranged by her father. Lady Fatima (sa) was known for her generosity, compassion, prayers, and strong faith. After the Prophet's (sa) death, she suffered greatly from the loss of her father and the oppression of her rights. Lady Fatima (sa) passed away at a young age in Madina, leaving behind a legacy of sacrifice and virtue.
2. Name: Fatima
Title: Az Zahra (The Radiant)
Father: Prophet Muhammad (S)
Mother: Bibi Khadija (A)
Birthdate: 20th Jamadil Aakher, 7 years before Hijra, in Makka
Martyrdom: 3rd Jamadil Aakher 11AH
Buried: Madina, Saudi Arabia
3. BIRTH OF LADY FATIMA(S)
Lady Fatimah (A) was the only daughter of Prophet
Muhammad (S) and Lady Khadijah (A). When Lady
Khadijah (A) was about to give birth, the women of
Makka refused to assist her saying that she had
betrayed them by supporting the Prophet (S). However,
Allah granted Lady Fatimah (A) a very special birth.
Lady Khadijah (A) received four midwives by the
command of Allah and these were the four chosen
ladies named:
4. when Fatima al-Zahra (sa) was born, the following chapter (Surah) of
Noble Qur'an was revealed:
"In the Name of Allah, the most Kind, the most Merciful.
Surely (O Muhammad)We have given you kawthar,
Therefore pray to your Lord and make a sacrifice.
Surely your enemy is the one who shall be without descendants
(Abtar)." Surah al-Kauthar, (108:1-3)
When Rasulallah (saw) was asked what al-Kauthar meant, he replied
that it was a stream in heaven and the man who would give water
from that stream to the believers would be Imam Ali (as). He then said
that al-Kauthar also meant abundance, and the birth of Fatima al-
Zahra (sa) signified that, through her, his descendants would be in
abundance. She was the wife, mother and grandmother of the imams
The promise of Allah (SWT) was certainly true because today, there are
countless descendants (Sayyid) of Rasulallah (saw) spread throughout
the world, while there is nobody who claims to be a descendant of the
Quraish. Thus the enemies of Rasulallah (saw) were those who became
truly "Abtar".
5. Lady Fatimah (A) is known as
“Sayyidatun-nisa i‘l Alameen”
which means Leader of all the
women of the world.
She inherited the many
qualities of her father
including wisdom, will-
power, piety, patience
and knowledge.
Her generosity and compassion for the
poor was such that no beggar ever
returned from her door without being
attended to. Imam Husain (A) has said,
“I often witnessed my mother absorbed
in prayer from dusk to dawn praying for
neighbors and others and then praying
for her family.”
Although the
Prophet (S) was a
perfect example for
men, it was Lady
Fatimah (A) who
undertook the duty
to preach to the
women. She was
and still is the
perfect model for all
women to follow.
6. Often Rasulullāh (s) would be heard saying, ‘Allāh is pleased with one
who pleases
Fātima andAllāh is displeased with one who displeases Fātima.’
7. The Prophet (S) has been reported
to say, “Fatima is a piece of my
heart.” Whenever she came into
his presence, the Prophet (S)
would stand up in respect, not
because she was his daughter, but
because she possessed the highest
qualities of piety and faith
amongst all women.
The passing away of her mother Sayyida
Khadija (‘a), Sayyida Fātima (‘a) used to
look after her father. Whenever he came
home after preaching, wounded and
covered in blood, she would tend to his
wounds and bandage them. And for this
reason, Rasulullāh (s) used to call her,
‘Um Abiha’, which means “the ‘mother’ of
her father”.
8. Each time a proposal came, the prophet
rejected it saying “This matter of the
marriage of Fatima, my daughter, is in
the hands of Allah Himself, and He alone
will select a spouse for her”.
Proposals of marriage
started coming for the
hand of lady Fatima (s)
from the rich and the
powerful.
When imam Ali (s) came to
the prophet, seeking her
hand in marriage, Lady
Fatima (s) accepted.
MARRIAGE OF LADY FATIMA (S)
9. Imām Ali (‘a) owned nothing except his
sword and armour. He was advised by
Rasulullāh (s) to sell the armour to meet
the expense of marriage. With the money
from the sale, he purchased some basic
items for his new life that was
about to begin.
Rasulullāh (s) himself performed the marriage
ceremony. This was also in the month
of Ramadān 2 AH, after the Battle of Badr.
The wedding was very simple but
beautiful and blessed.The Muhājirun and
Ansār gathered for the wedding and Imām
Ali (‘a) arranged for a feast (walima) in honour
of his wife.
10. On the night of her wedding,
Fatimah (s.a.) had a new dress on.
When she knew that a young
woman from the Ansar could not
find a dress to put on, she took off
her wedding dress and gave it to
that young woman. Fatimah (s.a.)
turned away from every material
pleasure and preferred the
satisfaction of Allah to everything.
11. From this marriage Imām Ali (‘a) and
Sayyida Fātima (‘a) were blessed with five
children:
Imām al-Hasan (‘a),
Imām al-Husayn (‘a),
Sayyida Zaynab (‘a),
Sayyida Umm Kulthum (‘a),
and Hadrat Muhsin (‘a) who died before he
was born when SayyidaFātima (‘a) was
injured when her home was attacked and
set on fire.
12. Imam al-Hasan (a.s.) said, some night, I saw my
mother in her maghrib bow and prostrate (offer
prayers) until the light of morning appeared. I
heard her praying to Allah for the believing men
and the believing women and mentioning them
by name. She prayed to Allah for them too
much, but without praying for herself. I said to
her, “Why do you not pray to Allah for yourself
mother?”
She said, “O my son, the neighbor (first) and
then the house.”
13. Fatimah (s.a.) was charitable and too kind to the poor and the deprived.
The following holyVerse was revealed for Ali (s), Fatima (s), Imams
Hassan (s) and Hussein(s) and his family:
“They feed the destitute, orphans, and captives for the love of Allah,
saying:We only feed you for the sake of Allah and we do not want any
reward or thanks from you (76:8-9).”
Fatimah (s.a.) milled wheat and barley for her poor
neighbors who were unable to do that. She carried
water to her weak neighbors who could not get
water.
14.
15. Event of the blanket –Hadis e kisa
In Surah al-Ahzāb (33) āyah 33 Allāh mentions how pure and safe the Ahl al-Bayt
(‘a) are from all sins and evils. This is known as theVerse of Purification (Ayah at-
Tathir).
Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin],O people of the [Prophet's]
household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification. 33:33
This āyah was revealed when Rasulullāh (s) collected the four members of the
Ahl al- Bayt around him and wrapped them with one blanket and prayed to
Allāh to bless them. This event is known as the Hadith al-Kisā (the Event of the
Blanket)
The Hadith al-Kisā shows that
Sayyida Fātima (‘a) is the centre
of the wholeAhl al-Bayt because
Allāh also tells Jibrāil (‘a) that the
five who have gathered are
‘Fātima, her father, her husband,
and her sons’.
16. The status of this pure lady can be seen in the event of Mubahila, when the
Prophet (S) faced the Christians and they arranged to meet to debate and i
one another to decide which was correct, Islam or Christianity. The verse came down
“Come let us summon our sons and your sons, our women and your women, and
ourselves and yourselves, and then let us humbly pray and invoke the curse of
Allah on the liars!” (3:61).
When we see who the Prophet (saw) brought as his women, it was no other than Lady
Fatima (A).
17. After the death of my father, the sufferings that befell me were so
great that if such hardships fell on the days, the days would turn
into nights. (Fatima (s))
The new Caliph seized the land of Fadak that the Prophet (S)
had given to Lady Fatima (s), thus cutting of the source of
income for the holy family.
The death of the Prophet (S) affected Lady Fatima (A) very much
and she was deeply saddened and grief-stricken.
THE GRIEF OF LADY FATIMA (S)
Lady Fatima(s) was not even allowed to freely mourn
for her father as Imam Ali(s) was forced to build a
small place outside Madina where she could cry over
her father
18. These cruel tyrants went to Fatima’s house to forcefully take Imam Ali(s) to
pledge allegiance to the new caliph. They set her house on fire and resorted to
physical violence by pushing down the door of this pure lady’s house, crushing her
between the door and wall which madeher miscarry her unborn child Mohsin
19. Martyrdom of Fatima Zehra (sa)The account of the last day of her life
It was 3rd day of Jamadi al-Thani, 11 after Hijrah. Fatimah Zehra (s) got out of
bed, saying that her fever had come down. She started bathing the children,
immediately Imam Ali (as) and Bibi Fizza (ra) came to her assistance. She got
those children bathed, dressed and fed, then sent them away to her cousin.
Imam Ali (as) was surprised to find that his dear wife, Fatima Zehra (s) had left
her bed and had started doing the housework; he asked her about it and she
replied: "This is the last day of my life. I wanted to wash my children's hair and
clothes, because they will soon be orphans, without a mother!“
"I ask you not to let anyone who did injustice to me to witness my funeral, for
they certainly are enemies of mine, and the enemy of Messenger of Allah,
Muhammad (saw). Also don't give them the chance to pray over me, nor to any
of their followers.
I want you to wash me at night, put the shroud on me, perform the funeral
prayer and bury me at night when eyes are rested and sight is put to sleep. And
after my burial, sit beside my grave and recite Noble Qur'an for me.“
20. Sayyida Fātima (‘a) passed away in Madina onTuesday 3rd Jamādi al-Ukhra 11 AH at
the
tender age of 18.This was only 3 months after her beloved father Rasulullāh (s)
passed away. Imām Ali (‘a) conducted her funeral rites and buried her, secretly in the
middle of the night.
This is because she was unhappy with some people who had hurt her after her father
Rasulullāh (s) had passed awayand she did not want them to attend her funeral.
21. "A Flower nipped in the Bud, It came from Heaven, And It went to
Heaven, And left Its Fragrance in My Mind.“
Imam Ali(as) on Fatima Al-Zahra (as)
