8. SHIRK-OPPOSITE OF TAWHID
The opposite of Tawhid is Shirk. It means to
believe in or worship anything
or anyone besides ALLAH.
Shirk is the greatest sin in ISLAM.
To believe ALLAH has a partner means to
believe someone or something is equal to ALLAH.
A PERSON WHO DOES SHIRK IS
CALLED A MUSHRIK
9. Shirk in the Quran
‘If you set up partners with Allah, your deeds
would surely become worthless, and you would
surely be among the losers.’ Rather, worship Allah
alone and be among the grateful. (Az-Zumar 39:65-66)
10. “Hidden Shirk” (Shirk al-Khafiyy)
Shirk al-khafiyy is when someone
prays, fasts, recites, but does this to
show off to others. In other words,
his/her intention is for the sake of
other than Allah (swt).
Reciting Quran
11. “Hidden Shirk” (Shirk al-Khafiyy)
• "It is about him who says: If such and such were
not there, I or my family would have perished or
afflicted by misfortune. He creates a partner for
Allāh who provides for him and protects him.“
• Imam Sadiq (as)
If it was
not for
you, I
would
have been
ruined
12. Belief in GOD is a natural instinct
Human beings always
automatically want to believe
in a higher power. Why?
This is because belief in Allah is
built into us as a natural instinct or
compass. This compass is called
Fitrah and we are born with it
The Holy Prophet (saw) said;
Every child is born on the natural instinct (fiṭrah i.e. to believe in One God only).
Then it is the child’s parents who make the child a Christian or a Jew or a Magian
(and so on)."
Everyone is born with a pure Fitrah
that tells us that there is only one
GOD.
But as they grow up, a person
may be influenced to ignore
the FITRAH or follow false
Gods or not to believe in God
at all
13. Rasulallah (saw) was passing through a
town with some of his companions
when he met an old woman, who was
making wool into thread with a
spinning wheel.
Rasulallah (saw) greeted her and
started speaking to her. He asked her
if she had faith in God, and she replied
that she did. Rasulallah (saw) asked her,
why? She said, “This spinning wheel
does not turn unless there is a hand to
turn it, and the heavens cannot turn
unless someone is turning them, ”
Rasulallah (saw) looked at his
companions and said, “You should
have the faith of this woman”
14. An atheist asked Imām Jafar as-Sadiq (‘a) to
convince him of the existence of Allāh.
Imām knew that the man sailed in the seas
very often, so he asked him,
‘Have you ever been caught in a fierce storm
in middle of nowhere, and thought you were
going todrown?’
‘ yes!’ replied the man.
Then the Imām (‘a) asked, ‘And at that time,
when there was complete hopelessness, was
there not a glimmer of hope that perhaps
someone or something, by some miracle,
could still save you?’
‘ yes,’ said the man again.
‘The imam (a) said; That Power in which you
had that hope which saved you, is Allāh!’
17. Just as footprints in the
sand is a sign that a man
passed by,
The universe and all the
creations are signs
pointing to Allah’s
existence
Imam Ali (as)
18. LESSONS LEARNT
TAWHID MEANS THAT WE BELIEVE
THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD, WHO
HAS NO PARTNER OR FAMILY
THE OPPOSITE OF
TAWHID IS SHIRK.
A MUSHRIK BELIEVES THAT
GOD HAS SONS,
DAUGHTERS OR PARTNERS
SHIRK IS A MAJOR SIN THAT
ALLAH WILL NOT FORGIVE
WE HAVE AN
INBUILT SYSTEM
CALLED FITRAH
THAT TELLS US
TO BELIEVE IN
ALLAH
Hidden shirk is when someone
praises others instead of Allah,
prays, fasts, nicely, but does this
to show off to others. intention is
for the sake of other than Allāh
Signs of Allah’s existence are
everywhere for us to see
