The first section of the course develops an understanding of sociology and emphasizes the use of
sociological imagination and sociological perspective to question the obvious in order to recognize the
opportunities and constraints in our lives through the connection of personal aspects of an individual s
life to social and historical influences. The three main theoretical approaches (Structural Functionalist,
Conflict, Symbolic Interaction) were discussed during the lecture and were applied to analyze sports.
Sociological methods were also studied to help distinguish common myths, based on anecdotal
evidence and correlating data that is affected by other factors that are not considered in the research,
from facts supported by scientific evidence. The three research orientations used by sociologists are
positivist sociology, interpretative sociology and critical sociology. Positivist sociology conducts
quantitative research such as surveys, experiments and statistical data to demonstrate a cause and
effect relationship. Interpretive sociology conducts qualitative research and focuses on subjective
realities and tries to understand what people do and why they do it. Critical sociology disagrees with
the common idea that society has a natural order and focuses on the need for social change.

What Is Non-Embodied Identity
I really enjoyed how in this class we learned more about identity and how to explore our own. And
what I think worked really well was exploring what Identity was at the beginning of the semester.
After we learned about what creativity was and was not we started on defining Identity and what non
unitary self was. Non unitary self is saying that you are more than just 1 just thing. I always knew that
was true I just never knew the word for it. Before this class I was pretty solid in my identity, and how I
felt about it. I knew that I was Somali American and how that shaped my identity. I understand what
culture clash was before I consciously knew that I was juggling two separate cultural identities. As I
grew older I started to describe my identity as a triple threat, as an opposition to the norm of American
society. I was Muslim, Black, and Woman. Being conscious of my identity allowed me to navigate
many different spaces, especially when I came to college. In college, there are so many unwritten rules

Once the solution was filtered, it needed to cool in order to start forming the crystals. The product did
not cool down enough properly before the decision was made to start scraping the flash. This physical
disturbance and incorrect temperature is what lead to the development of poor crystals. The

our yield. Putting the flask into ice bath, and limiting the disturbances surround it, would have been a

Sustainability reporting in the United States is still a work in progress. While more countries around
the world are requiring companies to report the effects of their business activities as part of their
annual report, this practice is still voluntary in the US. Even though sustainability reporting is not
required, companies generally disclose sustainable information on their websites or through social
media. Being social responsible builds a certain type of bond that brings internal and external
stakeholders together.
Many companies in the US have taken action and developed their corporate governance model that
will meet their needs as well as the needs of the people around them, thus creating a better
environment for shareholders and stakeholders. Currently, most companies that issue sustainability
reporting follow the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards guidelines. The GRI standards are
designed to achieve transparency, and it has become the most common set of standards used amongst
organizations for sustainability reporting.

Clarke did a few activities the one that strike me was reading an unscrambled word passage. Each
student alternated and read each word in order of the seating arrangement. Luckily, I was the one of
the first student to read, so I knew who was before and after me. This activity was related, but
memorable at the same time. As a student with a learning disability, I struggled to process information,
but I don t struggle reading. The point of this activity was to show that a student with dyslexia struggle
to read, and to show that if the student has to read out loud, he or she, is only going to remember what

a fictional town. The poems are written in free verse. Free verse is when a poet uses no pattern to the

When Masters started the Spoon River Anthology, he ?began to contribute his Spoon River epitaphs to

Our group started to look at the creative constraints before designing the container which included 12
popsicle sticks, 5 10 index cards, 1 meter of duct tape, and 1 plastic bag, and the container had to fit
the base of a pie plate. Since we had to prove if 1 cubic cm is equal to 1 ml of water, we had to fit 1
liter of water in our container. Our group started discussing what shape we wanted to do and soon we
decided making a cube because it would be easy to build and it makes sense. Before building the
container had to made a plan, our plan was to start building from bottom to top. So we started off with
the base, but before we did that we had to make the dimensions which were 10 cm for the length, 10
cm for the width, and 10 cm for the height and it equals out to 1,000 cm. We planned to use all of the
materials, but we had to cut or bend them. We cut the popsicle sticks to 10 cm and bent the index
cards at the 10 cm mark that we made with a ruler. We placed the popsicle sticks in an X formation
and connected the sides with more popsicle sticks, so in total we used 6 popsicle sticks. We duct taped
the sides of the base and started working on the sides of the container. We taped the 4 bent index cards
to the base and taped popsicle sticks in the inside of the container vertically. We place the bag inside

revolutionize society and shine light on the world we know so very little about. However, it is easy to
get lost in specific studies and view each one as its own, independent discovery. And while each
experiment provides an important look into the complexities of this world, science is an amalgamation
of many discoveries strung together in complex ways. This way, the merits of each study can
interrelate in order to further understand something else. In the realm of positive psychology, it is
important that a number of different scientific discoveries work together to explain an overarching
topic. For example, two studies that are interrelated are Martin Seligman s exploration of learned
helplessness, and Roy Baumeister s study on willpower depletion. Both are important in their own
rights, but by comparing both Seligman and Baumeister s experiments, scientists can discuss the
overarching concept of willpower as a depletable resource. Psychologist Martin Seligman conducted
an experiment that aimed to understand more about classical conditioning. In his study, he rang a bell
and lightly shocked a dog. Eventually, if the dog heard the bell, it would react to the shock before it
even happened. This was all good, it was a great example of classical conditioning, but the truly
interesting part of the study came later. Seligman constructed a box with a small wall in the middle.

that there are over thousand made in small food stands throughout Chicago. On February 8th, 2014, I
went to Donald s Famous Hotdogs in Chicago Illinois. Donald s is a small diner serving soup,
sandwiches, and hotdogs. I ordered the best item on the menu, the Chicago style hotdog. The Chicago
style hotdog stands out from the rest because it s delicious flavor, colorful presentation and variety of
condiments.
What separates Donald s Chicago style the other Chicago style hotdog is not the topping but the
fundamental idea of hot dog, the sausage. There are two types of hotdog sausages, wieners which tend
to contain pork and chicken or turkey. Theses sausages are inexpensive but lack in flavor while
frankfurters or franks tend to more expensive, nevertheless are all beef and strongly seasoned. Equally
important is the hotdog s casing. Traditional casing is made from the small intestines of sheep; it s
known as natural casing franks. These sausages have firm texture and have a signature snap that

1. One of my favorite movies of all time is The Kids Are Alright . It centers on a lesbian couple, Nic
and Jules, and their two children, Laser and Joni. Laser and Joni are biologically half brother and
sister, sharing the same sperm donor father. Laser is only fifteen, but interested in getting to know his
biological father. He convinces his older sister to look him up, knowing he would have to be eighteen
to do it himself. The movie follows the repercussions of the discovery of their biological dad, and also
examines Nic and Jules relationship, and Laser s development of independence, self, and identity.

shows, Law and Order Special Victims Unit. In this episode, Choice (season 5), we are introduced to
an assault victim who is pregnant. Over the course of the episode, we discover that the victim,
Jennifer, has been drinking heavily due to the stress she has been put under. Initially she agrees to
stop, but it is soon discovered that Jennifer is a severe alcoholic, and has no intention of altering her
behavior. The lead detective, Olivia, tries to get her help, but it s eventually discovered that Jennifer
has already given birth to another child who was later adopted, and who is now suffering with fetal
alcohol syndrome. In this episode, we see that Jennifer s husband, along with many of the SVU
detectives try to provide her with resources, support, and advice, but it takes her being introduced to
her biological child and seeing the severity of the consequences of her actions that she chooses to
accept the help she needs. There were many other factors in this pregnancy that could also be harmful
to the child. Not only was the mother an alcoholic who continued to drink, she also was under a severe
