Plot Summary: The story starts off with an unnamed narrator pondering his environment while
looking out of his window at the city he lives in. He describes a fog that surrounds the town as
that of a smoke like nature. Many men are walking along the streets covered in soot, smoke, and
they were covered in black. The narrator goes on to describe that they were working in the metal
factories all night, slaving over boiling cauldrons of metal and that during the day, they normally
are in a state of drunkenness and infamy. There is smoke coming from the chimneys of the iron
