As the French philosopher Baron de Montesquieu believed, a system of checks and
balances of power are necessary to have a society. William Golding had written the
Lord of the Flies, a book about a group of young boys stranded on a island needing
to find ways of survival. His book portrays how Montesquieu s idea of checks and
balances are needed to make an ideal community. On the island, Jack and Ralph
were the two boys that seemed most fit to be leaders among these stranded boys
and at first the island was a safe place for living, until Jack gains more and more
control where the levels of authority are not equal. With Jack having most of the
control, there is an absence of balance and this absence of balance between powers
on the island causes the boys turn to savagery and chaos. Golding writes of the
boys failing to have a mindset of surviving together by living their life on the island
with an imbalance of power to govern themselves and by having this imbalance, the
boys kill each other and destroy the island to rise in dominance, which is what

painkillers, like fentanyl and morphine, however, they are highly addictive and

People start off taking the opioid painkillers in order to not feel pain as prescribed
by their doctors. Then, they end up getting addicted to them. There are also illicit
opioids, such as heroin, that are also highly addictive and also lead to dependency

also often mixed with other drugs. The combination of taking an unregulated drug in

How do U.S. and European policies affect the global perspective on patenting
software?
In the sections that follow, the policies of the U.S. and Europe will be analyzed to
see how these ethical questions may be answered.
Background Information: Governing Bodies
Up until recent times, the organization of the global patent system has simply been
that each country has their own patent laws and offices. These offices deal with their
own domestic patent filings, as well as those of foreigners seeking protection against
infringement in that particular country. Manufacturers have come to embrace the
idea of distributing their goods to the world market; so as globalization grows, so
does the need for international patents.
In 1973, thirteen European countries signed the European Patent Convention (EPC),
with the objective of developing a uniform patent system (the European Patent
Organisation) in order to make patent protection in Europe easier and less costly.
Four years later, the European Patent Office (EPO) was founded as the executive
branch of the Organisation. The EPO currently has twenty seven member countries,
and is still expecting more to join. Though the EPO does include all fifteen
members of the European Union (EU), it is important to note that the EPO is not
governed by the EU.3 Each country still maintains its own patent office and applies

Life Extension and It s Meaning for Life Aside from having ideas of what life is and
how it came to be, another idea to discuss is whether or not can we redefine human
life through life extension. It has been observed in tests on organisms simpler than
humans, that the process of aging is plastic, or is capable of being influenced. An
example of the observation comes from numerous tests with mice in which the mice s
telomeres, or the ends of their chromosomes that protect the chromosomes from wear,
are lengthened or shortened. Lengthening these telomeres using their variation of the
protein, telomerase, allowed for the mice to have longer lifespans. Keeping in mind
that mice have been observed to have increased lifespan due to their treatment with
telomerase, such method of life extensionis currently not feasible with humans. This
is due to the fact that treating humans with human telomerase leads to a higher
probability of having cancer. Thus, other ways of extending lifespan are being
developed, one way in particular being through regenerative medicine or regenerative
therapies. The strategy to combat agingto length human lifespan with regenerative
medicine comes from the theory that aging is caused by the accumulation of cell
damage throughout a human s life. This damage results from biochemical accidents

good leader and how succesful leadership adapts to different sports using practical
examples to supplement my arguments.

Two ways in which leaders develop or are validated have been suggested:
1. Prescribed Leaders. In a more formal situation the leader is assigned by a higher
authority and imposed on the team or group. For example, the Chairman will employ
a manager, the manager will appoint a captain. (Wesson et al 2000).
2. Emergent Leader. A leader who achieves the status or authority through having
the support of the group usually emerges from the group as a result of having the
appropriate skills, knowledge or expertise that the group members may need or
value. (Wesson et al 2000). Whether a leader emerges or is prescribed they will still
exert their influence amongst the team or group through their personal qualities
which I discussed earlier. A leadership is generally seen as a very complex social
interaction.
A key theory to emerge about leadership is Fiedlers Contingency Theory of
Leadership (1967). Here he analyses and explains the apparent link between a leader s
leadership style and the situational requirements of the task. He emphasised that the
