One of the most important people in the founding of the Information Age would
probably be Gordon Moore. From his work at Shockley Semiconductor to his
founding of Intel, Moore has probably done more for the Information Age than
anyone else: his contributions include mass producing the transistor, making
integrated circuits viable, and founding Intel to create these ICs. Throughout it all, he

but his accomplishments led him to frequently disagree with Shockley. Moore and
seven other of his colleagues became tired of Shockley s management style, so they
left Shockley Semiconductor and formed their own enterprise known as Fairchild
Camera and Instrument. For this reason, the founders of Fairchild became known as

So said Henry James in an unsigned review of another author s work. But his view was certainly not shared by all those who cast their opinions into the fray. An unsigned review in the Saturday Review said of Collins work, Estimated by the standard of great novels, the Woman in Whiteis nowhere. Somewhere between these two points are friends and correspondents of Mr. WilkieCollins. Novelist George Meredith wrote to Collins himself saying, The tension of the W[oman] in W[hite] is not exactly pleasant, though cleverly produced. One wearies of ... Playing on Collins own comparisons to a court trial this reviewer wrote, They are not staring at the spectators, or, if they are, they are staring listlessly and vacantly, like witnesses who are waiting to be called before the court, and have nothing to do until their turn arrives. Of course many positive critiques of the novel existed. One was written as a direct reaction to the Saturday Review piece. This anonymous reviewer of the Spectator cried out , The vivid and manifold emotions with which we read her story are still fresh in our memory, and we retain a lively sense of the personality of every actor in it from Marian and Laura down to the old parish clerk. Yet we are told that the author `does not attempt to paint character or passion. He is not in the least imaginative! Mashallah! This critic ends his or her review stating, To sneer at the best thing of its kind because it is not something else is a convenient mode of detraction, and, when done with assurance and a certain degree of literary tact, it may pass with the unwary for authoritative criticism; but it seems a pitiful thing after all when once the trick of it has been discovered. Although the industry is beneficial from a life cycle assessment point of view, over the years it has gravitated toward countries with low labor costs, weak regulations on occupational safety, and limited environmental enforcement. The global shift in the industry to countries with comparatively weaker regulatory systems is of particular concern as ships contain many hazards that can have significant detrimental effects on humans and the environment if not dealt with properly. Currently, the global center of the ship breaking and recycling industry is located in South Asia, specifically Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. These three countries account for 70 80 percent of the international market for ship breaking of ocean going vessels, with China and Turkey accounting for most of the rest. Only about 5 percent of the global volume of such vessels is scrapped outside these five countries. This study focuses on the SBRI in Bangladesh and Pakistan to get a better understanding of the economics of the industry and the environmental impacts arising out of such activity and to explore possible ways in which such environmental effects may be mitigated.
