In The Scarlet Letter, author Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays Hester s daughter Pearl as
a unknowingly mischievous child that is in some way always adding to Hester s
ultimate guilt and punishment of her past sin. In the story a young, beautiful woman,
Hester Prynne, committed a sin which was a very serious offense against the Puritan
community. Hester had many different forms of punishment such as guilt, shame,
standing on a scaffold in the village, and the scarlet letter. After the initial shock of
the sin the people became less interested in how Hester lived her life, but she is still
constantly reminded of the misconduct of her past actions through her daughter.
Pearl is a constant reminder of the scarlet letter and Hester s sin because she is a
source of judgement, her personality reflects the sin itself, and because of her
isolation from many people of the Puritan religion.
Pearl is the type of child that has a lot to say about everything. Many of the things
she says should be reprimanded by her mother, but Hester is often reminded that
Pearls actions are most likely a reflection of being a product of her own sin. This
frequently keeps Hester from saying anything at all to Pearl. Even though Pearl is
unaware, she is very judgmental. When they were walking in the forest she
happens to unintentionally judge Hester by bringing up the scarlet letter. Pearl
says to her, Mother, the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself,
because it is afraid of something on your bosom (Hawthorne 173). Hester then
becomes aware that she is in fact in the shade. Hester became a little curious to see
if this was true so she reaches her hand out and to her dismay the sunshine
disappeared. She is now focused on the fact that sin is looming over her like a dark
cloud that it will still always be there. Pearls judgment and lack of cautiousness

mathematics is usually seen as unintelligent, or academically challenged. A different
student, one who is gifted in mathematics, yet is below average when it comes to
skills in their art class is not faulted for their loss of artistic talent. They are praised
for their intelligence no matter their artistic prowess. Artistic students are constantly
made to feel deficient, as if there is something wrong with them if the struggle with
STEM subjects. This paper focuses on asking why students are made to feel that way.
Why intelligence is measured in standardized testscores and letter grades. It will
explore how lack of the arts and creativity is damaging to students, and how this
