biography of the cardinal, Jesuit, doctor of the church and his works

1. SAINT ROBERT BELLARMINE

2. born in Montepulciano, October 4, 1542 -

3. He died in Rome on September 17, 1621

4. Third son of five children, he was born into a family
of noble origin in Montepulciano

5. His father, Vincenzo Bellarmino, was a confalonero from Montepulciano, and his
mother, Cinzia Cervini, very pious and religious, was the sister of Pope Marcellus II.

Pucci.

7. After an initial education in the family, given the religious
inclination, he was sent to study with the recently
arrived Jesuit fathers also in Montepulciano.

8. his father preferred to send him to Padua to direct him to
the secular clergy, convinced that his son's excellent gifts
would allow him to have a good ecclesiastical career
with economic benefits for the family

9. a cousin of his from Padua, Ricciardo Cervini, also wanted to join the
new religious order. His father finally granted permission. At eighteen
he entered the Roman College with his cousin on September 20, 1560
and the next day they made their first religious profession.

his commitment
to studies was
renowned and he
was considered an
example of the
Imitation of Christ

11. Drawing inspiration from Latin authors such as Virgil, he composed
several short poems in both the vernacular and Latin languages.

12. He studied at the Roman College from 1560 to
1563, and was a classmate of Cristopher Clavio

13. he began to teach humanities in
colleges of his religious order, first in Florence.

14. and then to Mondovì; -in this Piedmontese town, he
distinguished himself as a preacher, although he was not yet
ordained a priest, and he applied himself to the study of Greek

15. In 1567 he began to study theology systematically in Padua,
where he studied in particular the work of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

16. Having visited Genoa for
a meeting of the Jesuits,
having shown excellent
qualities as a preacher, he
was sent in 1569 by
Francesco Borgia, provost
general of the Jesuit order,
to Louvain in Flanders,

17. Bellarmine
completed his
theological
studies at
Louvain.
He acquired
considerable
knowledge
about the most
important
heresies of
the time

18. He was ordained priest in Ghent on
March 25, 1570, the eve of Easter,

19. he became famous both as a teacher and as a preacher; he
was able to attract both Catholics and Protestants to his pulpit

20. He became professor of theology at Leuven in 1570, and remained here for
six years, until 1576, distinguished by his eloquence and his ability to counter
Calvinist theses, which were widely disseminated in the Spanish Netherlands.

21. The activity and work of Robert Bellarmine is inserted precisely in
this historical context of the Counter-Reformation. The studies he
undertook to apply it to teaching and lecturing subsequently
converged in the multi-volume work of “The Controversies”.

22. In his writing Bellarmine clearly exposed the positions of the
Catholic Church without controversy towards the Reformation,
but using only the arguments of reason and tradition.

23. In 1588 Robert
Bellarmine was
appointed
spiritual director
of the Roman
College.
In this period
he collaborated
intensively with
Pope Sixtus V in
the re-edition of
all the works of
Saint Ambrose

24. In 1590 he was part of
the legation, headed by
Cardinal Legate Enrico
Caetani, that Pope
Sixtus V had sent to
France to defend the
Catholic Church in the
difficulties arising from
the civil war between
Catholics and
Huguenots,
immediately after the
assassination of King
Henry III of France

25. After the mission of Cardinal Enrico
Caetani, Bellarmine resumed his work as
teacher and spiritual father. In the last
years of his life he guided Saint Luis
Gonzaga, who died at the age of twenty-
three in the Roman College in 1591 after
being infected by the plague from a man
who had been abandoned on the street.

26. In 1592 Bellarmine
became rector of the
Roman College, a
post he held for
about two years
until 1594.
In 1595 he became
provost of the Jesuit
order in the province
of Naples.

27. In 1597, Pope Clement VIII
called him back to Rome,
after his death in September
1596. His papal theologian
consultant, the Jesuit
Cardinal Francisco de Toledo
Herrera. Bellarmine was then
appointed consultant
theologian, as well as
"examiner of the
appointment of bishops",
"consultant of the Holy
Office"and theologian of
the sacred penitentiary.

28. Also in 1597 after
the death without
heirs of Duke
Alfonso II d'Este,
the Papal States
regained
possession of the
territories of the
Duchy of Ferrara.

29. Bellarmine accompanied the Pope
on a visit to the new territory.

30. In the consistory of
March 3, 1599, the
pope appointed him
cardinal.
On March 17 he
gave him the red
cap with the title of
Santa Maria in Via

31. The Pope appointed him on March 18, 1602
Metropolitan Archbishop of Capua. As soon as he
arrived in the diocese, he wanted to meet the poorest
families, whom he regularly visited and supported.

32. He distinguished himself by holiness and the doctrine
of it. He was responsible for the founding of the
Capua seminary, one of the first after the
Tridentine reform

33. The new Pope Paul V, elected with the agreement of the main Catholic
powers, insisted on keeping him with him in Rome, for which the cardinal
asked to be exonerated from the episcopal ministry in Capua. He was made a
member of the Holy Office and of other congregations, and later counselor-
head of the Holy See in the theological sector of its administration.

34. The case of Giordano Bruno. - On August 24, 1599, Bellarmine reports to
the Congregation that Giordano Bruno had admitted six of the eight
propositions as heretical and his position on the other two was unclear.

35. Bruno did not deny his ideas and preferred to face the bonfire,
which took place in Rome at Campo de' Fiori on February 17, 1600.

36. Bellarmine had departed from Ptolemaic orthodoxy by declaring himself in
favor of the fluidity of the heavens and the free movement of the planets.

37. The case of Galileo - The heliocentric theory was considered heretical by
theologians. In fact, arguing that the Sun was fixed in the center of the
universe, some phrases contained in the Bible were refuted, for example
"God stopped the sun" (Joshua 10:12) - or some theories supported by the
Church according to which the earth is immobile in the center of the universe

38. On May 24, 1616, Bellarmine signed (at the request of Galileo himself) a
declaration in which he stated that no penance or abjuration had been imposed
on him for having defended the heliocentric thesis, but only a complaint against
him had been registered in the Index. There had been no trial against him.

39. This statement was
later falsified by a great
enemy of Galilei, Father
Seguri, who revealed an
apocryphal statement in
which Bellarmine warned
Galilei, under penalty
of imprisonment, not to
insist on defending the
heliocentric thesis.
This false document was
used years later in the
trial against Galileo,
when Bellarmine, now
dead, could no longer
deny this report.

40. Bellarmine was assigned to the congregation
"De Auxiliis Divinae Gratiae", established in
1597 by Pope Clement VIII to settle a theological
controversy that arose between the Thomists,
led by the Dominican Domingo Báñez, and the
Molinists, which concerned the nature of
the harmony between the effective Grace
and human freedom

41. Dispute with Venice
1604 marked the
beginning of the dispute
between the Holy See
and the Republic of
Venice, which, without
consulting Pope Clement
and in poor financial
conditions, had repealed
the law exempting the
clergy from civil
jurisdiction and deprived
the Church of the right
to own real estate

42. He devoted much of his time to prayer and fasting - He continued to
givemany alms to the poor, to whom he left practically all his possessions,

43. completed the writing of a "large
catechism" and a "small catechism"

44. he composed a small and also
famous text “De arte bene moriendi”
as well as his auto-biography

45. the main cause of the delay in his beatification was
because Bellarmine was closely associated with a vision
of pontifical authority in stark contrast to the royalist
politicians of the court of 18th century France

46. June 29, 1930 he
was canonized.

him Doctor of
the Church, on
September 17,
1931

47. He is the patron of the Pontifical Gregorian University,
where he is commemorated of the 13th May. He is patron of
catechists, canon lawyers, and of Cincinnati city in the USA

48. Since June 21, 1923, his body
has been exhibited in the
third chapel on the right of
the church of Sant'Ignazio di
Loyola in Rome, the church
of the Roman College that
houses the relics of other
Jesuit saints, including Saint
Luigi Gonzaga Gonzaga.
