Saint Albert the Great was a German Dominican friar, philosopher, theologian, and bishop. He was one of the greatest scientists and philosophers of the Middle Ages. He studied at the University of Padua and joined the Dominican Order in 1223. He taught theology at several universities and counted Thomas Aquinas among his students. Albert made significant contributions to integrating Aristotle's philosophy with Christian theology. He was a prolific writer and wrote on many topics including logic, theology, science, and philosophy. He was known as Doctor Universalis for his vast knowledge. He died in 1280 and was canonized as a saint in 1931.

2. Known as Albert the Great; scientist, philosopher,
and theologian, born c. 1206;
died at Cologne, 15 November 1280.

3. He is called "the Great", and "Doctor Universalis" (Universal Doctor),
in recognition of his extraordinary genius and extensive knowledge,
for he was proficient in every branch of learning cultivated in his day

4. Albert, eldest son of the Count of Bollstädt, was
born at Lauingen, Swabia, around the year 1200

5. As a youth he was sent to pursue his studies at
the University of Padua; that city being chosen either
because his uncle resided there, or because Padua
was famous for its culture of the liberal arts,

6. In the year 1223 he joined the Order of
St. Dominic, being attracted by the
preaching of Blessed Jordan of Saxony
second Master General of the Order.

7. He taught theology at Hildesheim, Freiburg
(Breisgau), Ratisbona, Strasburg, and Cologne.

8. He was in the convent of Cologne, interpreting Peter Lombard's
"Book of the Sentences", when, in 1245, he was ordered to go to Paris.

9. During this period of teaching
at Cologne and Paris he counted
amongst his hearers St. Thomas
Aquinas, then a silent, thoughtful
youth, whose genius he
recognized and whose future
greatness he foretold.
The disciple accompanied his
master to Paris in 1245, and
returned with him, in 1248, to the
new Studium Generale of Cologne,
in which Albert was appointed
Regent, whilst Thomas became
second professor and Magister
Studentium (Master of Students).

10. In 1254 Albert was elected Provincial
of his Order in Germany

11. He journeyed to Rome in 1256, to defend the Mendicant
Orders against the attacks of William of St. Amour,

12. During his sojourn in Rome Albert filled the office
of Master of the Sacred Palace (instituted in the
time of St. Dominic), and preached on the Gospel
of St. John and the Canonical Epistles.

13. At the General Chapter
of the Dominicans held
at Valenciennes in 1250,
with St. Thomas Aquinas
and Peter of Tarentasia
afterwards PopeInnocent V),
he drew up rules for the
direction of studies,
and for determining the
system of graduation,
in the Order.

14. In the year 1260 he
was appointed Bishop
of Ratisbon
Albert governed the
diocese until 1262,
when, upon the
acceptance
of his resignation,
he voluntarily
resumed the duties
of a professor in
he Studium at Cologne

15. In 1263 Pope Urban IV relieved him of the duties
of bishop and asked him to preach the eighth
Crusade in German-speaking countries.

16. In the year 1270 he sent
a memoir to Paris
to aid St. Thomas in
combating Siger de
Brabant and the Averroists.

17. He was called by Pope Gregory X to
attend the Council of Lyons (1274)

18. in 1277 when Stephen Tempier and others wished to condemn the writings of
St. Thomas, on the plea that they were too favourable to the unbelieving
philosophers, he journeyed to Paris to defend the memory of his disciple

19. After suffering a collapse of health in 1278, he died on 15
November 1280 in the Dominican convent in Cologne, Germany

20. He was beatified
by Pope Gregory
XV in 1622;
he was finally
Canonized in 1931.
He was proclaimed
by Pius XI the
patron saint
of natural
scientists
in 1941.

21. Since 15 November 1954 his relics are in a Roman sarcophagus
in the crypt of the Dominican St. Andreas Church in Cologne

the curriculum
of studies for
all Dominican
students,
introduced
Aristotle to the
classroom and
probed the work
of Neoplatonists,
such as Plotinus

25. the tradition of Dominican scholastic philosophy put into practice, for example, in 1265
at the Order's studium provinciale at the convent of Santa Sabina in Rome, out of which
would develop the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the "Angelicum

known not only for
being the founder
of Germany's
oldest university
there, but also for
"the big verdict"
(der Große Schied)
of 1258,
which brought
an end to the
conflict between
the citizens of
Cologne and the
archbishop.

27. Albert devoted the last
tractatus of De Bono
to a theory of justice
and natural law.
Albert places God as
the pinnacle of justice
and natural law. God
legislates and divine
authority is supreme.
Up until his time, it was
the only work specifically
devoted to natural law
written by a theologian
or philosopher.

28. He gave to Christian philosophy and
theology the form and method which,
substantially, they retain to this day whose
"Summa Theologiae"was the first written
after all the works of Aristotle had become
generally known at Paris. Their application
of Aristotelean methods and principles
to the study of revealed doctrine gave to
the world the scholastic system which
embodies the reconciliation of
reason and Orthodox faith.

29. His philosophical work
is very extensive and
consists of a complete
commentary
on Aristotle,
commentaries
on Pietro Lombardo,
the Pseudo-Dionysius,
the Old and
the New Testament.
He gathered into one
vast encyclopedia all
that was known in his
day, and then expressed
his own opinions.

30. He resolved to
purify the works
of Aristotle from
Rationalism,
Averroism,
Pantheism,
and other errors,
and thus compel
pagan philosophy
to do service
in the cause of
revealed truth

31. Pantheism was refuted along with Averroism when
the true doctrine on Universals, the system known as moderate
Realism, was accepted by the scholastic philosophers

32. He was an authority on logic, theology, botany, geography, astronomy, astrology,
mineralogy, alchemy, zoology, physiology, phrenology, justice, law, friendship, and love.

33. Many stories arose about Albert as an alchemist and magician. "Much of the modern
confusion results from the fact that later works, particularly the alchemical work
known as the Secreta Alberti or the Experimenta Alberti, were falsely attributed to
Albertus by their authors to increase the prestige of the text through association."
