The small intestine is 6 meters long and consists of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. It is adapted for absorption with numerous folds, villi, and enzymes to further break down carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and absorb nutrients. Villi in the small intestine increase the surface area for absorption to help digest and absorb nutrients from food more efficiently. Most water is absorbed in the ileum portion of the small intestine.
