Polar environments are typically found at the top and bottom of Earth and are characterized by harsh conditions like snow, ice, cold winds and difficult terrain. They can negatively affect the human body by drawing blood away from the skin towards the core, increasing risks of frostbite and hypothermia. Antarctica is a polar region that is even colder than the Arctic and contains the largest ice sheets. It is able to sustain some life like various penguin species that use techniques like porpoising to navigate in the icy waters and return through holes in the ice. There is debate over whether Antarctica should be classified as a desert due to its very low rainfall levels.
