Journey to the End of the Earth
A power point presentation by
J . Cheriyan
on an essay written
by Tishani Doshi
on his journey to the Antarctica,
the fifth largest continent.
The Objectives.
• Helping the pupils have a thorough grasp
of the facts presented to them.
• Creating awareness about the
environmental issues.
• Causing positive behavioural changes in
children.
HE started his journey 13.09 degrees North of the Equator in Madras.
What is the Equator?
 He reached there after travelling for 100
hours.
 He was working with a programme named
Students on Ice.
 It was headed by a Canadian Geoff Green.
 This programme takes High School
students to the ends of the world to
provide them with inspiring educational
opportunities.
 The idea of the programme is to foster a
new understanding and respect for our
planet.
 The students –the future generation of
policy makers-can see for themselves the
changes in the environment.
 They can see the glaciers retreating and
ice shelves collapsing.
 They can see the threat of global
warming.
Global Warming
 Global Warming, term denoting the
accelerated warming of the Earth’s surface
due to anthropogenic (human activity-
related) releases of greenhouse gases due
to industrial activity and deforestation.
Global Warming
Increasing the Global Warming

Ice shelves
The students can see the ice shelves collapsing.

The students can see the glaciers retreating
• Part of History
• The writer talks about the history of the
earth which existed some 650 million
years ago.
• There was a super continent. Gondwana
500 million years ago.
The super continent Gondwana
Dinosaur
Mammoth
• When the continents pushed
apart, the Himalayas rose, South
America joined NA, the Drake
passage was opened and
Antarctica was pushed to the bottom of
the world.
The bottom of the world
The Himalayas
What is the Drake Passage?
 Drake Passage, also called Drake Strait, stretch of
ocean between the southern tip of South America and
the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.
 land projecting into water: a narrow piece of land
that juts out from the mainland into an area of water
 It is 640 km (400 mi) wide and about 800 km (500 mi)
long. Ships travel through Drake Passage when they
round the notorious Cape Horn, It is a stormy region:
The windiest , coldest, driest continent in the world.
90% of the Earth’s total ice volumes are stored here.
There is 24-hour austral summer light here.
The Continent Antarctica is covered by a massive
Ice sheet.
Why is visiting the Antarctica
important?
• Visiting Antarctica helps us get a grasp of
where we have come from and where we
are heading
• We can understand the significance of
Cordilleran folds [ a system of mountains
in South America]
• Pre-Cambrian granite shields, ozone and
carbone, evolution and extinction.
 Cambrian Period, in geology, a division of
the geological timescale, the earliest
period of the Palaeozoic Era, stretching
from about 550 to 500 million years ago
 During the Cambrian many of the
continents (South America, Africa, India,
Antarctica, Australia, parts of China) were
assembled in a supercontinent,
Gondwana, which stretched from the
South Pole to the equator.
 The visual range at Antarctica ranges from
Mites, blue whales icebergs.
 .Antarctica has a simple eco system and
lacks bio diversity. So it is the perfect
place to study the little changes in the
environment.
 Eg. Phytoplankton.-Ozone depletion
affects its life.
 The Antarctica experience can be full of
epiphanies.
 The writer’s greatest epiphany happened
when he walked on the ocean.
 The Antarctica can show us the beauty of
balance in play on our planet.
The writer could see seals sunning on the
ice floes [sheets of floating ice.]
Some ice bergs are as big as countries such as
Belgium.
Blue Whale
The Human Impact.
 We have been in existence only for a
paltry 12,000 years.
 We have created a ruckus.
Etched our dominance over nature
with our villages towns, cities
mega cities.
The Human Impact.
 Our increasing population in a battle with
other animals for limited resources.
 Unmitigated burning of fossil fuels has
created a blanket of carbon dioxide
around the world.
 This increases the global temperature.
 As a result the climate on the earth is
changing.
Why is Antarctica Important?
 In the world this is the only place that has not
sustained a human population.
 So it is relatively pristine.
 It holds in its ice cores half million year old
carbon records.
 So Antarctica is the place to go to study the
Earth’s past present and future.
Try to answer the following
questions.
 What do you know about the
Antarctica?
 Why is it important to study the
Antarctica?
 What dangers does the earth face?
 What will you do to save the earth
when you grow up?
A message to Students
 You have the idealism to save the world.
 You are being taught when you are ready to
learn, absorb, and most importantly act.
 Try to bring about positive changes in the
world.
 Live a wonderful life. God bless you.
 With love J.Cheriyan.
Thanks
