Roman sculptures were typically made of terra-cotta and featured narrative reliefs on triumphal columns. The Portonacio Sarcophagus, carved in marble, was used for the burial of a Roman general and depicts battle scenes between Romans and Germans. Byzantine sculptures often had religious or natural themes and used symbols like animals. Romanesque sculptures included works like reliquaries and altar fronts that were often costly materials and Gothic sculptures began to project outward more with figures given individual poses and were more lively representations.
