Pit And The Pendulum
The Pit and the Pendulum is a short story narrative told by a condemned prisoner
during the period of the Spanish Inquisitions. The story takes place in Toledo, Spain
and begins with the prisoner describing a delirious state in which he sees robed
judges presiding over his sentencing. Prior to the pronounced judgment, he is
overtaken by fear and faints. The story continues in vivid detail, as the prisoner
describes over a period of days, through lingering periods of consciousness, his
torturous entrapment.
As the narrative moves forward, the prisoner assumes he s been sentenced to death.
He awakens alone, in absolute blackness, for which he questions whether he is dead
or alive. His thoughts pirouette between abject terror and self imagined ... Show more

While examining the tight quarters of his cold and damp surroundings, he feels
piercing eyes fixed upon him. Horror fills his body as he gazes upon large rats
entering and exiting the pit of death. He realizes he is in the same dungeon, but it
is much smaller than he had envisioned. As his eyes slowly adjust to the brightness
of the lights, he becomes aware of a noise above him. Almost immediately, his eyes
catch glimpse of the movement of a pendulum. Entranced and enthralled by its
animated rhythm, he watches in both terror and delight as it swings backwards
and forwards. This fascination soon turns to fear as the prisoner realizes a scimitar
is attached to the bottom of the pendulum. A maniacal terror slowly creeps into his
thoughts as he imagines the sounds of the blade first slicing into his robe and then
tearing apart his flesh. Time drags by. He and the rats feast on pungently seasoned
meat. The scimitar swings closer and closer, his death certain, when an idea occurs
to him. With only seconds to spare before the sharp blade devours him, he quickly
rubs the meat on the bandages binding his hands and feet. The smell attracts the rats
who rush in and chew the bandages lose. He slides off the wood plank only seconds
before his skin is perforated. Euphoria fills him at his victory over the pendulum of

The first three layers are part of the hardware. The first one, called Physical layer,
defines the method of moving data between computers, so it is mostly the cabling
and signal modulation. This is the physical channel through which the bits of data
move. Network devices that operate at the physical layer include a repeater and a
hub. The Data Link layer is the second layer and it has the NIC, which is the
Network Interface Card. The NIC contains the Media Access Control (MAC)
address, which is the unique physical identifier of each system. The recipient s and
sender s Mac Address, together with the data and the frame check sequence (FCS)
is contained in envelopes called frames, which are passed to the next layer. The
Network layer is the third layer and it includes the routers. It is also the layer where
the packets get created and addressed to go from one network to another using the
Internet Protocol (IP). The IP packets include the destination IP address, the source
IP address and the data. IP addresses work as the network interface identification and
location addressing and are stored in the system software. The Transport layer
assembles or disassembles the data packets and also ensures reliable data transfer and
integrity. After that, the data goes to the Session layer which establishes connections
between devices and applications. The Presentation layer then formats the
Diversity Within The Workplace Within Australia
Diversity in organizations has become a huge interest within the workplace due to
many factors such as globalization, migration, innovation and most importantly
because it is morally correct. Generally, as businesses main goal is profit, and the
workforce diversity management is such a pervasive business practice (Bowes, L.
2013) they need to keep up with global markets. Diversity in Australia is important, as
it is one of the most culturally diverse in the world, with 27% of Australian
population being born outside of Australia, however the managementof cultural
diversityin Australia has only been mediocre (Fenwick, M. 2011). With only few

Moral case focuses on pursuing greater ethnic diversity, and the fact that it is the right
thing to do (Green, A. 2012). The Business case however does not celebrate diversity
in itself, but that diversity is supported only if and as long as it drives competitive
advantage and organizational profit (Dijk, H, J. 2011). This represents that employees
are suggested to be resources or assets not because what they represent but how they
benefit the business, this also shedding light between the differences between
utilitarianism and deontological and their differences; as the Business case being
quite insensitive to deontological principles and beliefs. The benefits of having a
diverse workplace are endless such as improving morale and productivity, exploiting
the creativity and innovation latent within the organisation, as well as generating
trust within service populations (Green, A. 2012) not to mention keeping up with fast
changing markets.
An Australian organization, which highly regards diversity management, is
Woolworths Limited. Their diversity policy stating that they are committed to an

Dominion of Canada s Foundation
Ever since I moved to Canada, I have constantly been taught about arguably the single
most important event in the country s history Confederation. In 1867, the Fathers of
Confederation helped ratify the first British North America Act, the culminating
product of a hard fought political process which united Upper and Lower Canada,
Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The study of the Dominion of Canada s formation
is typically fixated on the politicians roles (3), and this deficient scope is a significant
reason as to why Andrew Smith s monograph, British Business and Canadian
Confederation, manifested itself so clearly to me. As I am studying Canadian history
through a business context, this book seemed quite appropriate Instead of focusing
on the usual suspects, such as the American threat or Anglophone Francophone
relations, Smith seeks to analyze the often neglected influence that British
businessmen had on Confederation. As such, the piece s overriding argument is that
had there not been support from prominent British investors, Canada s landmark
federal unification would not have taken place, whether on July 1, 1867 or otherwise
(3). By overtly and exhaustively presenting the prevailing contention in the opening
paragraphs, Smith leaves no doubt in the reader s mind as to what the following
chapters contain and validate.
The British North American economy was significantly operated by the
aforementioned investors (21). Due to economic crisis in the early 1860s (44), they

I did a lot of research to make sure that I wouldn t be forgetting anything, and came
up with a checklist of what my duties should be.
BRING OUT LIST
Before I get to the list though, I want to share a little more about what I found in my
research. I read a book that stated that there are three key elements to a successful
wedding day. They are as follows:
The Aisle The longest walk you ll ever take.
The Altar The place where two become one.
The Hymn The celebration of the marriage.
I think Lisa must have read the same book, because after taking the vows earlier
today, I m pretty sure I heard her mumbling those same three things.
Aisle Altar Hymn.
Ok, now back to the checklist. This checklist that I came up with included each of the
following.
1. Making sure his Face and Hair are in order (If god couldn t do it, what chance have
I got.)
2. Keeping Kevin s mechanical hands away from the wedding car so that we actually
got here
3. See that angry ex girlfriends are kept at bay Thankfully the foot and mouth
epidemic saw off most of them, and I think the rest are actually out celebrating as I
speak.
4. And finally, make a speechat the wedding reception, so I thought I would give a
little bit of background into Kevin for those who don t know him as well as me. So
here goes.

Imaging In Physical Therapy
Diagnostic imaging is an important tool for the differential diagnosis of many
musculoskeletal conditions. Physical therapists working in direct access roles are
assuming greater diagnostic responsibility. The role of musculoskeletal imaging in
physical therapist practice is therefore becoming increasingly important. Availability
of diagnostic studies to physical therapists may vary greatly depending upon many
factors within the practice setting. US Army physical therapists functioning as direct
access providers have long held privileges for ordering imaging studies and
laboratory tests considered essential to their diagnostic role. I strongly support

The company has raised USD $310 million since its inception and rocket internet
owning nearly about 52% stake in it. When 3 years ago, Foodpanda started its
operation in India, some said it was a delivery company, some thought it s a
restaurant or food supplier. In terms of profitability, Foodpanda has generated a
gross profit of EUR 1.0 m in H1 2014, representing a margin of 84%. Absolute
EBITDA loss amounted to EUR 11 m.
Below are some suggestion and recommendation
Foodpanda need to focus on food delivery because it is one of the main factor plays
while retaining a customers and many customers are not happy with the food delivery
services.
Foodpanda need to improve its services related to making payments to vendors.
Vendors get frustrated when they didn t receive payment of the order fulfilled by
them. And many a times they start warning Foodpanda, that in the future they will
not take any orders from them. This is the area where Foodpanda is lacking and need
to take action immediately. They need to understand that for a small vendor it s
become difficult to function without receiving payment on time.
Timely respond to customers if they are not able to process their orders on time. It
was found that some customer faced this problem and recived message after 1 hour
that foodpanda can t process their order after placing their order with
Xenophobia In Children Of Men
We can interpret this movie through a societal lens. When we do this we can read
the director s message about the dangers of xenophobia. The film when viewed
this way makes the audience take a step back and think about how they and their
society treats refugees. This film takes real world refugee issues and puts them at
the forefront of the readers view. In Children of Men refugees have all their value
as humans taken away from them. They are herded up and put in cages, we see this
in the scenes where Theo walks around inner london, and then shipped off to places
where they don t have to be dealt with by the wealthy british population. This is a
very similar situation as what is happening in the real world. When the audience sees
this mass... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Children Of Men Wealthy non refugees are shown living in relative luxury
while refugees are treated like animals. Kee is a fugee (the populace of Children of
Mens name for refugees). Because of this she is often overlooked and maltreated,
this means that her pregnancy goes unnoticed. In a world where everyone has
been infertile for 18 years this is big news. This acts as a warning, in society people
of value are being ignored because of their refugee status. This makes the viewer
think about this kind of situation in the real world. In the real world being labeled
as a refugee over shadows your intelligence and skills, leading many refugee s
potential to be wasted. The viewer relates Kee s situation back to the situation of a
real life refugee, how many of the world s biggest problems could have been
solved by a refugee who was simply overlooked based on this status? By showing
the audience a variety of negative societal interactions with refugees in Children of
Men, Alfonso Cuaron has made people question their own society s views and
actions towards refugees. By thrusting these issues right into view Alfonso has
removed the option to hide and ignore the refugee
Women in Muslim Society
The role of woman, her position and status in society, and her nature have been issues
of debate and discussion informed by religion, tradition and culture, misogyny,
feminism and many times downright ignorance and bigotry.
In discussing the role of women in contemporary society there are three main areas
that can be addressed. The perceptions of woman within contemporary Muslim
societies. The status, position and role of woman in the Qur an and in early Islam
from where we derive our aspirations. Some of the challenges facing us in
contemporary society more specifically, in South Africa. You might have heard at
some time or the other that Islam teaches that women are inferior and unequal to

This passage makes a clear statement about the absolute equality of the human moral
condition and identical spiritual and moral obligations placed on all individuals
regardless of sex. Incidentally, this is one of the passages that addresses women
directly. It is related that the women asked the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) about why
the Qur an addressed only men when women too accepted God and His prophet.
This question occasioned the revelation of the Qur anic verses explicitly addressing
women as well as men a response that unequivocally shows Muhammad s (pbuh) and
Allah s readiness to hear women. Thereafter the Qur an explicitly addressed women a
number of times.

Eyes On The Prize Analysis
The documentary Eyes on the Prize offers beautiful and impactful artistic
interpretations to instill emotion and passion onto the viewer. The director carefully
and deliberately included different choices in the documentary to evoke emotions
through the images and videos they show. Documentaries matter so much (and now
more than ever) because they show the world the truthabout the past and what is
currently happening. As fortunate US citizens living in 2018, we tend to forget the
tragedies currently happening in the world, and we often overlook the freedoms we
currently have forgetting that a brave soul fought continuously for our freedom today.
Documentaries are especially important because they remind us of such things.
educate us on the past, warn to not to repeat the past, and most importantly, to stand
up when similar things do happen. Watching documentaries is a keen reminder of
what it means to struggle for freedom and justice and will hopefully, in turn, make the

This creates a sense of reality for the viewer, reminding that history is still a
prevalent part in the present. By providing interviews of the present, it shows how
the person is still affected by a specific period in history. This allows the viewers to
better understand the not only what happened in a specific event, but also give
insight how powerful the event was, bring emotion behind the event, and show the
viewer the truth of the event by providing a direct witness. By having someone
describe in detail what happened when they were there brings the history alive and as
the viewer, we tend to sympathize with this
Earth And Venus Similarities
There are a total of eight known planets in our solar system which consist of four
inner and four outer planets; the four inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars,
are known as the terrestrial planets because not only are they the closest to the sun,
but they are also Earth like, meaning that they are similar to Earths composition and
structure ( What is a Terrestrial Planet? ). While these three planets bare close
similarities, the planet that closely resembles Earth is Venus. Known as the Sister
Planets, or the Twins, Earth and Venus are said to share close similarities in
relation to their size, mass, density, composition, and distance from the sun ( Venus
Compared to Earth and Venus Information and Facts ). However, as Matt Williams
(2016) suggests, while these two planets may have been very similar early in their
existence, just as with most siblings, as time progressed, they began to change
essentially transforming into two distinct, individual planets, with very little in
common. After the creation of the solar system, 4.5 years ago, Venus, just as
Earth, was said to have formed as gravity drew in a whirlwind of dust and gas (
Earth In Depth; Venus In Depth ). Venus is the second planet from the sun
(67,237,910 miles away), and the only planet said to be named after a female the
Roman goddess of love and beauty ( Planet Venus Facts ). On the other hand, as the
only planet in the solar system not named after Greek and Roman gods or
The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective Teens
Being a teenager can be hard. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, was
written to help teens understand the different ways that they can improve themselves
and the way they handle difficult situations. The book talks about common, everyday
problems that teenagers might be facing, and how they can overcome them.
Habit one says that you should be proactive rather than reactive. A proactive person is
someone who takes responsibility for their actions and is able to forgive people.
They understand that there are better, more fulfilling things in life than revenge. A
reactive person often blames others for their problems, even when they are most
likely the ones at fault. They hold grudges and have a hard time things go. Being
proactive is important because if you go through life blaming other people for
your mistakes, you re not going to get anywhere. By not taking responsibility for
yourself, you are allowing your success to get farther away from your grasp. From
this chapter, I have learned that in order to be successful, This chapter should have
been able to teach you that you need to take responsibility for yourself, and that you
can t blame others for your mistakes. You can apply this to my life by being honest
with people and by remaining calm in difficult situations.
The next habit states that you have to begin with the end in mind. You have to
know what you re working towards before you start working. If you don t have a goal
in mind, you ll spend your life
The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty Theme
Adaptation of Thurber s Walter Mitty In James Thurber s short story The Secret
Life of Walter Mitty, the author contrasts one man s life with the numerous
daydreams he has. Similar to the story, the film by the same name, directed by Ben
Stiller, gives a glimpse of Walter s life while adding substance to the story. Two
scenes in particular in the film involve flights that Walter feels compelled to make,
both in his decision to continue on a journey on which he has already embarked.
While Thurber s short story indicates that life without dreaming is dull, Stiller
morphs this theme to show that we all must step out of our shell to accomplish what
we want in life. From the opening scene of the short story, when Walter is
fantasizing about being on a naval vessel during a terrible story, one can see how
tedious life can actually be. Walter... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Walter s imagination pulled him away from the bland city streets of Waterbury and
set him in a world far more exciting than his own. Imagining a buzzing courtroom
removed Walter from the bore life was currently offering him; indeed, the mind has
the power to remove an individual from the drudgery of reality. What if we want to
step outside the boundaries that are in front of us and take a risk in believing that
what is impossible might actually be within our fingertips? Stiller continues to
show how if not for taking this risk, individuals will remain locked inside their
fantasy worlds. He illustrates this in a scene where his character ultimately decides
to board a helicopter with a slightly intoxicated pilot in control. If Walter had chosen
to cease his journey, then both his goal and his dream would crumble. There are
times in life when we must ask ourselves whether to step away from the norm to
continue the pursuit of personal desires or to remain immersed in comfort while
knowing our dreams and goals have

Essay On A Sorrowful Woman
Females grow up with the mentality on how to become the perfect wife/mother.

The many struggles a wife/mother must go through are kept away from the view of
people. In the story, A Sorrowful Woman by Gail Godwin, the main character is a

Carbon Footprint Of Leman Manhattan s Kitchen
Intro: One of the world s most pressing issues is the evident deterioration of the ozone
layer and the effect that carbon emissions have on the environment. Every day new
energy saving machines are being manufactured, but it is frequently pondered as to
whether this aids this environment. It is important to note that the size of a carbon
footprint does not always determine its impact as, A potent greenhouse gaswith a very
small atmospheric concentration can contribute to the overall greenhouse effect,

much impact on the environment. This essay will focus on the carbon footprint of

Through one on one work with Chef Jenny, a list of statistics was compiled that
have aided the process of this report. Thus, this essay will aim to answer the
question, What is the estimated carbon footprint of the kitchen on LГ©man
Manhattan s Panini day, and what is the significance of its emissions on the
environment? Now of course, not every meal the kitchen makes is the same, and
there really is no pattern to when a meal is prepared and served, but Paninis are one
of their most famed and known meals to the students and faculty. On the particular
day that this study focuses on, the menu consisted of Turkey and Provolone Paninis,
Corn Chowder, and an Arugula salad. This information was then used to calculate
and find the carbon footprint for this specific day in the kitchen. This essay will
therefore be presented through a breakdown of basic information on carbon footprint
and greenhouse gasses, the data and statistics from LГ©man s kitchen, and a strategy
to make the kitchen more eco friendly. This will allow opportunity to examine how
much energy a portion of the school uses and how its, potency effects the
environment.
Section 1:
The data used involved the shipping of food and the power it took to charge and use
kitchen utilities, which was imperative to the discovery of the school s carbon
emissions on Panini day. So, it can be concluded that on

Abstract
This analysis will analyze the process of instructional design. It will discuss the
instructional design disciplines. There will be a discussion on instructional design
and how it aligns with scientific methods. The ADDIE model will be detailed in this
essay. The difference between instructional theoryand learning theory will be
compared and defined. The most important component of the instructional design
process will be visited. The task that instructional designers perform will be
discussed as well as the skills that he or she is required to possess. The conclusions
drawn will be included.

This is evident when one component of the system is stimulated and it can be
observed that all components of a system are responding. When a process and the
procedures are duplicated in order to prevent the entire system from failing this is
redundancy. When a system can adjust to conditions changes and monitor its
environment, it is called dynamic. When the elements of a system can communicate
efficiently in order to guide and govern, it is called cybernetic. When all the
elements of a system can achieve more than one element alone can, this is called
synergistic. This means that the whole is greater than the individual parts. When
human talent and imagination can generate ideas so that the instructional designers
can expand the limitations of a system it is referred to as creativity (Merrill,
Barclay, amp; Van Schaak, n.d.). Training is referred to as skills that are acquired
for specific situations that are to be mastered. However, training is necessary for
many situations that are complex when the failure can be catastrophic. One example
of education is teaching a student to learn in an environment that is different, such as
in an online virtual classroom. This scenario describes a form of intentional learning.
The discipline of instructional design is based on detailed assumptions. It is created
by scientific principles that are verified by empirical data. The instructional
Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Leon Festinger created the cognitive dissonance theory as an attempt to explain why
people desire to have consistency between their behaviors and actions. Cognitive
dissonance is the distressing mental state people feel when they find themselves
doing things that don t fit with what they know, or having opinions that do not fit
with other opinions they hold (Festinger, 1957; as cited in Griffin, 2009). Thus,
people are motivated to change either their behavior or their belief when feelings of
dissonance arise. Dissonance is reduced using three mental strategies. Selective
exposure is the strategy used before a decision is made. The premise of this strategy
is to avoid information that is likely to increase dissonance. The second... Show more

The difference between condition one and three is that condition three allowed the
participants to self affirm after finding out their verdict was in disagreement with the
other group members. Festinger argues that the lack of choice adds consonant
cognitions which reduce the overall amount of dissonance that otherwise would be
experienced (Festinger, 1957, 1958; as cited in Matz Woods, 2005). Additionally,
the opportunity to self affirm strengthens self worth and thereby reduces the
dissonance created when people s actions threaten their personal integrity (Simon,
Greenberg, Brehm, 1995; as cited in Matz Woods, 2005). Thus, Matz and Woods
hypothesize that dissonance will be reduced by the lack of choice and the
opportunity to self affirm. The results show low levels of discomfort in the lack of
choice and self affirmation conditions, providing an explanation of the kinds of
strategies people use to reduce dissonance. Study three introduces an interpersonal
strategy introduced by Festinger: changing one s own attitude to align with others
opinions (Festinger, 1957; as cited in Matz Woods, 2005). Building off of Festinger s
idea of changing one s attitude three conditions are used in this study. The three
strategies used are: (a) changing one s own attitudes to agree with others in the group,
(b) influencing others to change their opinion, and (c) joining a different, attitudinally
congenial group. The end results show
Argumentative Writing In College
Argumentative writing allows students to use many skills all at once including:
critical thinking, forming ideas, evaluating views, using logic, and researching.
Students need to learn how to write argumentatively to be successful in college and
employment. In these positions, individuals will be asked to write a confident and
strongly opinionated paper.
Persuasive used to convince the reader to agree and based on personal opinion
Argumentative presents viewpoints backed by research and evidence related to
different issues
As students work through the education system, they follow a staircase:
K 1: opinions and preferences on a topic through writing and illustrations
2 3: opinions, reasons, linking words/phrases with concluding statement
The Principles of the Yin and Yang Essay
The Principles of the Yin and Yang
The principle of the yin and yang is embedded in all facets of my life. But its
operations have taken the subtlest of forms, unfolding through a kind of shy
conspiracy, an inner dynamism in the nature of things. Such qualities are inherent in
the way Chinese traditions view things, as the web that has no weaver, an intricate
and interlaced patterns of relationships of all that there is without a known creator
and creation day. It is far different from a historical timeline or a linear logic. It
surmises that everything is related to everything else and lays heavy emphasis on
what is now that must be appreciated and contemplated upon rather than dwelling on

When we are conscious, we are awake and aware of internal and external stimuli,
thus we are actively adapting to the circumstances. While asleep, we are still, at
ease and relaxed. The Repair Theory of Sleep has very yin underpinnings, holding
that sleep restores, replenishes and rebuild our brains and bodies that are somehow
worn out by day s working activities.
As I step into the world outside my room, I see a bigger picture with more yin and
yang relationships. The social structure is made up of opposing links and overlying
relationships. In our patriarchal society, men (yang) are expected to be the more
dominant and influential in decision making vis Г vis women (yin) who are
expected to be submissive and docile. Social constructs such as genders have attached
yang characteristics to men and yin characteristics to women creating a gender
tension between. Understandably, in ancient China women are expected to be hidden
in their homes, passive and contracting to give way for a man s active and expansive
rule as culturally dictated upon them. But in reality, men (yang) and women (yin)
carries a certain degree of femininity (yin) and masculinity (yang) respectively. A
woman can be assertive and overpowering and a man can be nurturing and gentle
depending on the situation. In
Michelle Obama Speech Rhetorical Devices
In Remarks to the NAACP National Convention , Michelle Obama spoke about
how obesity in children has become a huge medical issue. She thoroughly explains
her Let s Move campaign, while using pathos and logos as rhetorical devices. The
audience that attended were mostly parents that grew up in the same generation as
Mrs. Obama. She related to them as she jokes about their past. She expressed her
message while including the audience by saying we or our . In addition, her being
family minded helped reach her ideas out to other parents as they are dealing with
the same issues. Mrs. Obama understood what type of audience made an appearance

hard work and for coming out to the convention, making the audience feel narcissist.
Michelle Obama told the audience, First of all, thank you for being here today and
thank you for the outstanding work that you ve done in making this is a great
American institution (418). The audience now feels as if they are making a
difference and everything that they are doing is improving the nation. Once they
feel that way, the people will feel more motivated to go out and accomplish more.
Mrs. Obama also used the same strategy towards the end of her speech when she
got the audience involved with the movement. Mrs. Obama announced, I m going
to need you, NAACP. This is not an endeavor that I can do by myself. We cannot
change the health of our community alone. I m going to need each and every
single one of you to work together for this campaign for our children s future (432).
Mrs. Obama is encouraging the crowd to make a difference and support her
campaign. Not only did she make the audience feel narcissist, she also made them feel
High School Football in Texas is Out of Control Essay
Abstract: High school football in the state of Texas has become out of control. The
sport is no longer played for the sake of the school but rather has become a Friday
night ritual to these small towns in Texas. The players are no longer just high school
kids inter acting in school sports but have now become heroes to these small town
communities. Communities simply no longer support their local high school team
but rally in pride of their hometown rivalry against another team. School
administratorsand coachesno longer are teachers and mentors for the kids but are the
equivalent to what in professional football are team owners and real coaches .

According to many, the game has become out of control in Texas, but continues to
draw crowds in by the thousands. For as long as most of us can remember,
academics and sports have co existed in the school system. Sports should support
the academic program. It should supplement learning, team playing and enhance
life skills. It should be fun, not life threatening, is should be part of life, not your
whole life. In Texas, academics gets swept aside in favor of football, parents quit
their jobs and uproot the family in search of better football schools, and students and
players alike spend most of their high school years in a football crazed state of mind.
Over seventy thousand dollars was spent in 1990 for the Permian Panthers travel
budget. The business community is one of the main reasons this figure is so high,
every year the community fights for who will get certain pages in the Permian
program booklets that are sold at each game. The programs generate over fifty
thousand dollars and are about thirty to forty pages long. In 1988 the Permian
yearbook alone generated over twenty thousand dollars ...virtually every lawyer,
doctor, insurance firm, car dealer, restaurant, and oil field supply business in town
had taken out an ad. (Bissinger 40) The yearbook ran two hundred and twenty four
pages and had over five hundred business ads. Every year that the Panthers would go
to state competition every business would completely decorate their
Wilderness in Call of the Wild by Jack London Essay
Symbolism Many of the characters in The Call of the Wild symbolize specific
qualities. One example of this is Mercedes. She represents greed and being spoiled.
Mercedes enters the wilderness clueless to what toll it will take on her. Undreamed
of! cried Mercedes, throwing up her hands in dainty dismay (73). This quote shows
that she was expecting (and hoping) for a more pampered way of life out in the
Klondike. Mercedes could also represent the unpreparedness of most of the people
going to the Klondike gold rush. The Klondike gold rush was so glamorized that
everyone thought that they could do it. In reality, the gold rush was much harsher
than most people thought it was.
Another example of symbolism in The Call of The Wild is... Show more content on

She is extremely out of place in the untamed wilds. Jack London uses Mercedes to
convey his ideas of this theme. Since she is so used to her pampered life, she
expects the wilderness to be the same. Mercedes and Buck are connected in this
way. Buck was used to a pampered life, but adapts to the wild by embracing his
primitive instincts gradually through the book. Mercedes, on the other hand, is a
prime example of all of the bad qualities to have in the wilderness; She is extremely
presumptuous, and spoiled. An example of these qualities is when Mercedes
wants to be pulled on the sled. It was her custom to be helpless (83). Instead of
adapting like Buck does, Mercedes tries to transfer her luxury live to the wild. By
adding Buck and Mercedes, Jack London shows that he is not making a value
judgment on wealthy people. He shows that two characters can come from the same
background, but be entirely different. Another theme is that primitive instincts can
be strong. This is mostly shown through Buck. He quickly realizes that he needs to
embrace these instincts or die. And not only did he learn by experience, but
instincts long dead became alive again. The domesticated generations long dead
became alive again (31). This quote shows how powerful Buck s feelings are. After a
short time in the wild, Buck s long dead instincts are awakened.

The Social Contract Theory Of Society
The social contract theory is the view that in order to form a stable society, a
contract or agreement must made implementing the people s ethical and political
obligations . Before this theory people lived in the state of nature meaning, there was
no government and no laws were enforced to control their community . Everyone did
what they wanted freely. Although freely may sound like a good thing; when
someone committed, what we call in today s society, a crime, they received no
punishment for it back then . The Social Contractwas a way for people to organize
their own government and assemble laws that had to be followed by everyone. Doing
so, allowed people to find understanding in how administration and authority works,

As time went on a theorist arose, a man named John Locke. Along with him having a
different perception of the social contract theory compared to Thomas Hobbes, he
also had a different view on what the state of nature was. Locke was actually the most
influential theorist to the founding fathers, specifically Thomas Jefferson . The third
theorist was John Rawls. Rawls name for his theory of the social contract was
actually often called the A Theory of Justice . These three theorists of the Social
Contract have strong beliefs about how a government should work and what
concepts are most important, as well as I do. I ve proposed a Social Contract that s
based on different views and different philosophical justifications from these three
theorists. My social contract is based on a very thoughtful and intellectual idea of
fariness and equality among our nation. Before societies came into existence people
lived an ordinary life. Everyone went through accomplishments and tragedies, as we
do now. However, people didn t have laws implemented to protect them from any
type of crime. Regulations weren t put into action to eliminate the taking advantage
of lower class citizens. I ve based my Social Contract off of the issue of crime and
people in higher ranking taking advantage of others below them. My social contract
is an agreement between the people and those holding specific positions in the
government, where the main focus is equality and fairness being present between

Poetry In Kaidin Witzberger s She Lets Me Breathe
Poems are beautiful and elegant. They can express many different situations and
emotions. In 2014, I began to understand poetry, and I grew to love it. I have
written many poems since then and I hope to publish them someday. I not only
love writing poetry but also, I enjoy reading poetry. The poem, She Lets Me
Breathe by Kaidin Witzberger is about fighting through the struggles of daily life.
This poem speaks to me on a personal level because I relate to it so much. She Lets
Me Breathe is a beautiful poem about love, depression and strength. It contains
examples of symbolism. This poem also has a deeper meaning which can be
described by breaking down the poem piece by piece. When this poem is broken
down piece by piece it shows the depth behind the words. The poem starts out by
saying, She lets me breathe, when the end is near. To me this means that the author
is depressed and is dying or wanting to die, but there is someone that the author
loves that makes her want to stay alive. The next line says, My heart is dear which
means that the person that helped the author want to live is someone the author
loves. I hear her screams in silence means that the person the author loves is also
struggling. Do you hear her near? In this simple question the author is trying to ask
something deeper, she is asking if anyone else notices the pain of the person she
loves. She lets me breathe in the dead of silence means even in the silence, when her
mind is racing with
A Brief Note On Rheumatoid Arthritis ( Ra )
Introduction
Brief Overview
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto immune disease, meaning that the body s
own antibodies react negatively in the body by attacking its own healthy cells. RA
is a disorder that causes extreme and painful swelling in the joints, prolongs
healing times, and also puts affected individuals at a higher risk of many other
conditions, such as cardiovascular disease (Carmona, Cross, Williams, Lassere,
March, 2010). It affects 0.5% of the adult population worldwide, though the majority
of this percentage is women over the age of 40 (Carmona, Cross, Williams, Lassere,
March, 2010). RA is like most other diseases in that the earlier the disease is
diagnosed and treatment is begun, the higher the success rate of slowing the disease
progression or putting it into remission.
The diagnosis of RA is often made by measuring the levels of rheumatoid factor (RF),
an antibody directed against human IgG, in the serum or plasma of the patient
(Keren, 2013). The great majority of patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis
present with very high titer levels of rheumatoid factor, and often times these
levels are high prior to the progression of RA (Keren, 2013). Therefore, rheumatoid
factor should be a great predictor of RA cases. However, there are issues with using
rheumatoid factor as the diagnostic test for RA; rheumatoid factors are known to
fluctuate greatly, levels can rise due to other infectious or acute disease, or levels can
drop and show a

the good way also because it is both low in cost and risk, it only license out the

Actually, exporting rate is low; it have to see the internal strategic and external
strategic position first if they analysis this problem. There has a major change in
internal strategic position from no production line to a systematic production way,
this would be the significant change. In an external way, the extension of the

Unbundling cable in the U.S. cable market Xiaoyu Zhu
From the above analysis of the specific case of SeeSo, we can generally conclude that
from the perspective of producers, under any of the three conditions, unbundling is
more profitable than bundling: 1) Consumers preferences are not significantly
different or consumers have similar preference; 2) Firms have significantly high
marginal cost; 3) The number of the consumers who have significant preference for
one product is significantly high.
However, unbundling can benefit consumers or increase consumer surplus under any
of the four conditions: 1) Consumers preferences are sufficiently different; 2)
Consumers might benefit from the price reduction; 3) The percentage of the
consumers with similar preference relative to consumers with different preference;
4) Firms have significantly low marginal cost. However, it seems that apart from the
fourth one, these approaches are not workable for U.S. cable markets. Based on the
following research and analysis, unbundling cable is less likely to increase consumer
surplus for U.S. consumers because of the large proportion of consumers with similar

Drug Court Case Study
1)Drug courts have historically been the preferred way to treat drug users/offenders.

this differ from the LEAD program?
To be eligible for drug court, one must plead guilty to nonviolent, low level drug
offence, but instead of going to jail you go through a treatment program that requires
random drug test, drug therapy, and regular meetings with the judge. If you miss
your appointments or fail your drug test; you can be punished, usually with jail time.

I personally don t like how much safety net they are on drug use. When Devin told
Kristina that she could mess up 1000 times, and still be in the program made me
cringe. Espcially when I saw Kristina using and being so cool about continuing her
drug use, because she knew that LEAD would always be there for her. But one of
the main reasons why I like the program is the fact that it doesn t force addicts to
get clean. It lets them make the choice for themselves, and I think that helps in the
road to recovery. Which is what I saw in the end of the documentary when Kristina
realized for herself that she needed to get clean, and was making the effort because
she wanted to, not because she was forced. Unlike Cari, who decided to start using
again just a couple weeks shy of graduating from drug court. Confirming my thought

Animalism In The Catastrophist
For him, the possibility of any mutation or metamorphosis was to be taken for
granted, if not indeed welcomed, as was the contingency that, dead sun or no dead
sun, the terrestrial globe could very readily be imagined after we re gone, claims
Christopher Hitchens, an English author, literary critic and journalist, in his article
The Catastrophist, where he comments on the pattern which James Graham Ballard
takes for the course of his works, each one of them showing a depressing and
deranged picture of humanity prone to animalistic and self destructive actions.
Hitchens describes Ballard as heavily influenced by Freud and surrealists, who taught
him what he already knew: religion is abject nonsense, humanbeings positively enjoy
inflicting cruelty, and our species is prone to, and can coexist with, the most
grotesque absurdities. It also reveals the latent effects that The World War II had
on Ballard s psyche, as it forced him into life in the internment camp in his early
teens, where he experienced over two years of the helplessness of religion in
defiance of worldwide violence and the more animalistic particularities of people
cramped in a limited space. Ballard adheres to the motion of humanity degrading, no
matter if in an overpopulated place like the tower in High Rise or almost entirely
secluded house as in Enormous Space.

comparison to 65% of house owners but they also contribute a lot to this society.
Multifamily housing has high potential for energy savings through retrofits, but the
lack of data on best practices and historical cost savings has weakened investment.
Data related to energy efficiency, utilities and construction is really difficult to obtain
for a building, as many multifamily owners and operators never benchmark the
energy performance of their building. This critical shortage of information about
building energy performance has prevented property markets from valuing energy
efficiency and severely undermined both public and private efforts to increase the
energy efficiency of multifamily housing. This has really affected the development of
energy efficient and green policies in multi family building. Green building is about
improving our design and construction practices so that the multifamily homes we
build today will last longer, cost less to operate, and won t harm the health of workers
and residents. It is also about protecting natural resources and improving the built
environment so that ecosystems, people, enterprises and communities can thrive and
prosper. Many a times what happens is there is no coordination between

Far away, on the border of both France and Switzerland, lies the massive CERN
Accelerator Complex. This series of particle accelerators increases the momentum of
packets of nuclei to almost light speed, then collides them. It collects the debris of
the resulting destruction in hopes of finding the basic building blocks of matter. This
is a basic overview of what happens at CERN, but when examined more closely, this
process becomes far more difficult and complicated. How does this Atom Smasher
work? How is it built? Most importantly, how do the thousands of euros poured into
this costly research benefit the practical world? The CERN Accelerator Complex
uses advanced technology and complicated processes to speed up particles just below

The final step is when they are shot into the Large Hadron Collider, twenty seven
kilometers, about seventeen miles, in circumference. This ring has two vacuum
tubes that fire protons in opposite direction, crossing them over in detector caverns.
Here, computers take measurements to make sure nothing unexpected happens,
such as a packet colliding into a wall, or smashing into another packet too early.
When they are finally made to collide at four terra EV each, the computer tracks
information about the debris, small particles such as quarks, and keeps it as data.
Thus ends the travel of the packets and the process is repeated, furthering the cause
of science. The technology to make this process work is incredibly advanced,
stretching from super conduction to super computers. Most of the electronics at
CERN are superconducting, which is where wires are cooled to such an extent that
they provide virtually no resistance for the electrons passing through them. The
niobium titanium wires at CERN are cooled to negative 456.34 degrees Fahrenheit,
making them one hundred times more conductive. This is vital, because the power
required to keep the accelerators, computers, magnets, ect. running is so colossal, the
CERN complex needs it s own substation. It runs on 1.3 terra watts hours per year,
enough to power 300,000 homes in the United Kingdom. The radio frequency cavity,

Essay about Greek History
Greek History In this book, the result of my inquiries into history, I hope to...preserve
the memory of the past by putting on record the astonishing achievements both of our
own and of the Asiatic peoples.... With this mission statement Herodotus introduces
his Histories, the first recorded history text in the western world. Using fragments of
the past he reconstructs a picture of the whole; the objects of his researches included
first hand accounts and tales passed down through generations, physical remains and
artifacts, and his own intelligence and creativity. Using sources such as these (though
he cites nothing), Herodotus describes the foundation of the Theran colony of
Cyrene, ca. 630 B.C.E.. In compiling... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The detail given in the Histories surpasses in amount that given in the degree
inscription but does not contain any overtly absurd or patently false accounts.
Herodotus description remains true to what is known about early Greek colonization:
the oracular role, economic and agricultural pressures spurring colonization, and the
mysterious and dangerous nature of unexplored territories. One aspect, given in both
Herodotus and the inscription, matches evidence of the period. The Theran decree
tells of Battos, Archagetes [founder] and king leading one hundred Therans to Africa;
Herodotus writes that with Battos as their leader and king...they sent two
pentekonters to [Africa], with each pentekonter containing fifty rowers each.
Herodotus says the colonists were chosen with brother drawing lots with brother; the
Theran decree relates that [o]n equal and fair terms shall they sail according to family.
The main differences between the two accounts lie not in conflicts, but in new
material. The inscription gives the rules to govern the actions of the colonists: their
rights of citizenship, the results of hardships to the colony. It also details how men
could be forced to join the colonization party, and that the consequence for disobeying
the order of the mother city was death. Herodotus remains silent on

  • 2. Pit And The Pendulum The Pit and the Pendulum is a short story narrative told by a condemned prisoner during the period of the Spanish Inquisitions. The story takes place in Toledo, Spain and begins with the prisoner describing a delirious state in which he sees robed judges presiding over his sentencing. Prior to the pronounced judgment, he is overtaken by fear and faints. The story continues in vivid detail, as the prisoner describes over a period of days, through lingering periods of consciousness, his torturous entrapment. As the narrative moves forward, the prisoner assumes he s been sentenced to death. He awakens alone, in absolute blackness, for which he questions whether he is dead or alive. His thoughts pirouette between abject terror and self imagined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While examining the tight quarters of his cold and damp surroundings, he feels piercing eyes fixed upon him. Horror fills his body as he gazes upon large rats entering and exiting the pit of death. He realizes he is in the same dungeon, but it is much smaller than he had envisioned. As his eyes slowly adjust to the brightness of the lights, he becomes aware of a noise above him. Almost immediately, his eyes catch glimpse of the movement of a pendulum. Entranced and enthralled by its animated rhythm, he watches in both terror and delight as it swings backwards and forwards. This fascination soon turns to fear as the prisoner realizes a scimitar is attached to the bottom of the pendulum. A maniacal terror slowly creeps into his thoughts as he imagines the sounds of the blade first slicing into his robe and then tearing apart his flesh. Time drags by. He and the rats feast on pungently seasoned meat. The scimitar swings closer and closer, his death certain, when an idea occurs to him. With only seconds to spare before the sharp blade devours him, he quickly rubs the meat on the bandages binding his hands and feet. The smell attracts the rats who rush in and chew the bandages lose. He slides off the wood plank only seconds before his skin is perforated. Euphoria fills him at his victory over the pendulum of

The Data Link layer is the second layer and it has the NIC, which is the Network Interface Card. In 1867, the Fathers of Confederation helped ratify the first British North America Act, the culminating product of a hard fought political process which united Upper and Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The study of the Dominion of Canada s formation is typically fixated on the politicians roles (3), and this deficient scope is a significant reason as to why Andrew Smith s monograph, British Business and Canadian Confederation, manifested itself so clearly to me. As I am studying Canadian history through a business context, this book seemed quite appropriate Instead of focusing on the usual suspects, such as the American threat or Anglophone Francophone relations, Smith seeks to analyze the often neglected influence that British businessmen had on Confederation. As such, the piece s overriding argument is that had there not been support from prominent British investors, Canada s landmark federal unification would not have taken place, whether on July 1, 1867 or otherwise (3). By overtly and exhaustively presenting the prevailing contention in the opening paragraphs, Smith leaves no doubt in the reader s mind as to what the following chapters contain and validate. The British North American economy was significantly operated by the aforementioned investors (21). Due to economic crisis in the early 1860s (44), they

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, was written to help teens understand the different ways that they can improve themselves and the way they handle difficult situations. The book talks about common, everyday problems that teenagers might be facing, and how they can overcome them. Habit one says that you should be proactive rather than reactive. A proactive person is someone who takes responsibility for their actions and is able to forgive people. They understand that there are better, more fulfilling things in life than revenge. A reactive person often blames others for their problems, even when they are most likely the ones at fault. They hold grudges and have a hard time things go. Being proactive is important because if you go through life blaming other people for your mistakes, you re not going to get anywhere. By not taking responsibility for yourself, you are allowing your success to get farther away from your grasp. From this chapter, I have learned that in order to be successful, This chapter should have been able to teach you that you need to take responsibility for yourself, and that you can t blame others for your mistakes. You can apply this to my life by being honest with people and by remaining calm in difficult situations. The next habit states that you have to begin with the end in mind. You have to know what you re working towards before you start working. If you don t have a goal in mind, you ll spend your life

Two scenes in particular in the film involve flights that Walter feels compelled to make, both in his decision to continue on a journey on which he has already embarked. While Thurber s short story indicates that life without dreaming is dull, Stiller morphs this theme to show that we all must step out of our shell to accomplish what we want in life. When a process and the procedures are duplicated in order to prevent the entire system from failing this is redundancy. When a system can adjust to conditions changes and monitor its environment, it is called dynamic. When the elements of a system can communicate efficiently in order to guide and govern, it is called cybernetic. When all the elements of a system can achieve more than one element alone can, this is called synergistic. This means that the whole is greater than the individual parts. • 24. Cognitive Dissonance Theory Leon Festinger created the cognitive dissonance theory as an attempt to explain why people desire to have consistency between their behaviors and actions. Cognitive dissonance is the distressing mental state people feel when they find themselves doing things that don t fit with what they know, or having opinions that do not fit with other opinions they hold (Festinger, 1957; as cited in Griffin, 2009). Thus, people are motivated to change either their behavior or their belief when feelings of dissonance arise. Dissonance is reduced using three mental strategies. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The difference between condition one and three is that condition three allowed the participants to self affirm after finding out their verdict was in disagreement with the other group members. Festinger argues that the lack of choice adds consonant cognitions which reduce the overall amount of dissonance that otherwise would be experienced (Festinger, 1957, 1958; as cited in Matz Woods, 2005). Additionally, the opportunity to self affirm strengthens self worth and thereby reduces the dissonance created when people s actions threaten their personal integrity (Simon, Greenberg, Brehm, 1995; as cited in Matz Woods, 2005). Thus, Matz and Woods hypothesize that dissonance will be reduced by the lack of choice and the opportunity to self affirm. The results show low levels of discomfort in the lack of choice and self affirmation conditions, providing an explanation of the kinds of strategies people use to reduce dissonance. Study three introduces an interpersonal strategy introduced by Festinger: changing one s own attitude to align with others opinions (Festinger, 1957; as cited in Matz Woods, 2005). Building off of Festinger s idea of changing one s attitude three conditions are used in this study. The three strategies used are: (a) changing one s own attitudes to agree with others in the group, (b) influencing others to change their opinion, and (c) joining a different, attitudinally congenial group. For as long as most of us can remember, academics and sports have co existed in the school system. Sports should support the academic program. It should supplement learning, team playing and enhance life skills. It should be fun, not life threatening, is should be part of life, not your whole life. In Texas, academics gets swept aside in favor of football, parents quit their jobs and uproot the family in search of better football schools, and students and players alike spend most of their high school years in a football crazed state of mind. • 29. Wilderness in Call of the Wild by Jack London Essay Symbolism Many of the characters in The Call of the Wild symbolize specific qualities. One example of this is Mercedes. She represents greed and being spoiled. Mercedes enters the wilderness clueless to what toll it will take on her. Undreamed of! cried Mercedes, throwing up her hands in dainty dismay (73). This quote shows that she was expecting (and hoping) for a more pampered way of life out in the Klondike. Mercedes could also represent the unpreparedness of most of the people going to the Klondike gold rush. The Klondike gold rush was so glamorized that everyone thought that they could do it. She is extremely out of place in the untamed wilds. Jack London uses Mercedes to convey his ideas of this theme. Since she is so used to her pampered life, she expects the wilderness to be the same. Mercedes and Buck are connected in this way. Buck was used to a pampered life, but adapts to the wild by embracing his primitive instincts gradually through the book. Mercedes, on the other hand, is a prime example of all of the bad qualities to have in the wilderness; She is extremely presumptuous, and spoiled. An example of these qualities is when Mercedes wants to be pulled on the sled. It was her custom to be helpless (83). Instead of adapting like Buck does, Mercedes tries to transfer her luxury live to the wild. By adding Buck and Mercedes, Jack London shows that he is not making a value judgment on wealthy people. He shows that two characters can come from the same background, but be entirely different. Another theme is that primitive instincts can be strong. This is mostly shown through Buck. He quickly realizes that he needs to embrace these instincts or die. And not only did he learn by experience, but instincts long dead became alive again. The domesticated generations long dead became alive again (31). This quote shows how powerful Buck s feelings are. After a short time in the wild, Buck s long dead instincts are awakened. The poem, She Lets Me Breathe by Kaidin Witzberger is about fighting through the struggles of daily life. This poem speaks to me on a personal level because I relate to it so much. She Lets Me Breathe is a beautiful poem about love, depression and strength. It contains examples of symbolism. This poem also has a deeper meaning which can be described by breaking down the poem piece by piece. When this poem is broken down piece by piece it shows the depth behind the words. The poem starts out by saying, She lets me breathe, when the end is near. To me this means that the author is depressed and is dying or wanting to die, but there is someone that the author loves that makes her want to stay alive. The next line says, My heart is dear which means that the person that helped the author want to live is someone the author loves. I hear her screams in silence means that the person the author loves is also struggling. Do you hear her near? In this simple question the author is trying to ask something deeper, she is asking if anyone else notices the pain of the person she loves. She lets me breathe in the dead of silence means even in the silence, when her mind is racing with

A Brief Note On Rheumatoid Arthritis ( Ra ) Introduction Brief Overview Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto immune disease, meaning that the body s own antibodies react negatively in the body by attacking its own healthy cells. RA is a disorder that causes extreme and painful swelling in the joints, prolongs healing times, and also puts affected individuals at a higher risk of many other conditions, such as cardiovascular disease (Carmona, Cross, Williams, Lassere, March, 2010). It affects 0.5% of the adult population worldwide, though the majority of this percentage is women over the age of 40 (Carmona, Cross, Williams, Lassere, March, 2010). RA is like most other diseases in that the earlier the disease is diagnosed and treatment is begun, the higher the success rate of slowing the disease progression or putting it into remission. The diagnosis of RA is often made by measuring the levels of rheumatoid factor (RF), an antibody directed against human IgG, in the serum or plasma of the patient (Keren, 2013). The great majority of patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis present with very high titer levels of rheumatoid factor, and often times these levels are high prior to the progression of RA (Keren, 2013). Therefore, rheumatoid factor should be a great predictor of RA cases. However, there are issues with using rheumatoid factor as the diagnostic test for RA; rheumatoid factors are known to fluctuate greatly, levels can rise due to other infectious or acute disease, or levels can drop and show a

Hitchens describes Ballard as heavily influenced by Freud and surrealists, who taught him what he already knew: religion is abject nonsense, humanbeings positively enjoy inflicting cruelty, and our species is prone to, and can coexist with, the most grotesque absurdities. It also reveals the latent effects that The World War II had on Ballard s psyche, as it forced him into life in the internment camp in his early teens, where he experienced over two years of the helplessness of religion in defiance of worldwide violence and the more animalistic particularities of people cramped in a limited space. Ballard adheres to the motion of humanity degrading, no matter if in an overpopulated place like the tower in High Rise or almost entirely secluded house as in Enormous Space.

Multifamily housing has high potential for energy savings through retrofits, but the lack of data on best practices and historical cost savings has weakened investment. Data related to energy efficiency, utilities and construction is really difficult to obtain for a building, as many multifamily owners and operators never benchmark the energy performance of their building. This critical shortage of information about building energy performance has prevented property markets from valuing energy efficiency and severely undermined both public and private efforts to increase the energy efficiency of multifamily housing. The detail given in the Histories surpasses in amount that given in the degree inscription but does not contain any overtly absurd or patently false accounts. Herodotus description remains true to what is known about early Greek colonization: the oracular role, economic and agricultural pressures spurring colonization, and the mysterious and dangerous nature of unexplored territories. One aspect, given in both Herodotus and the inscription, matches evidence of the period. The Theran decree tells of Battos, Archagetes [founder] and king leading one hundred Therans to Africa; Herodotus writes that with Battos as their leader and king...they sent two pentekonters to [Africa], with each pentekonter containing fifty rowers each. Herodotus says the colonists were chosen with brother drawing lots with brother; the Theran decree relates that [o]n equal and fair terms shall they sail according to family. The main differences between the two accounts lie not in conflicts, but in new material. The inscription gives the rules to govern the actions of the colonists: their rights of citizenship, the results of hardships to the colony. It also details how men could be forced to join the colonization party, and that the consequence for disobeying the order of the mother city was death. Herodotus remains silent on
