- #4 Who is Shell and what do we do? Most of you will have heard of Shell, but there may be a couple of things you may not know Who we are: As an energy company, we at Shell explore for, produce and trade in a range of energy resources. We explore for and produce oil and gas and we create essential products from them, such as fuels and petrochemicals. We also have a broad portfolio of hydrogen, biofuels, wind and solar power interests. We provide consultancy and technical services as well as research and development expertise to the energy industry. Shell’s Vision The objectives of the Shell Group are to engage efficiently, responsibly and profitably in oil, oil products, gas, chemicals and other selected businesses and to participate in the search for and development of other sources of energy to meet evolving customer needs and the world’s growing demand for energy. We believe that oil and gas will be integral to the global energy needs for economic development for many decades to come. Our role is to ensure that we extract and deliver them profitably and in environmentally and socially responsible ways. We seek a high standard of performance, maintaining a strong long-term and growing position in the competitive environments in which we choose to operate. We aim to work closely with our customers, our partners and policymakers to advance more efficient and sustainable use of energy and natural resources. We are active in more than 90 countries. At the end of 2010, we employed the equivalent of 93,000 full-time employees worldwide. In upstream we produce 3.3 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, means some 2,300 barrels every minute. Our fuel retail network has around 43,000 service stations, selling more than 145 billion litres of fuel to our customers each year. Whether it is transporting fuel to one of our Shell retail outlets, delivering equipment to construction projects or simply travelling to meetings, road transportation is integral to our business and this is why road safety is so critical to us.

So, getting road safety right is a priority for us. Tragically, over the years, our number one cause of fatalities has been road accidents.

- #11 To manage the impact of our operations and projects on the environment and society we have a comprehensive set of business principles and rigorous standards covering health, safety, security, environment and social performance - in short we say HSSE and SP – covered in the Shell HSSE & SP Control Framework. Control Framework:The Control Framework is a single, mandatory source for rules covering areas such as process and road safety across all Shell companies and operated ventures. Our focus on compliance includes tackling the cultural issues that can lead to unsafe behaviour. Goal Zero:Safety is a deeply held value, integral to honesty, integrity and respect for people. Goal Zero means; relentlessly pursuing no harm to people and no significant incidents. Goal Zero shifts how we think and act . What does Shell do to minimise road safety risks?Road Safety is taken extremely seriously at all levels of our organisation. It has the attention of management at the highest levels and is a high priority subject whenever we talk about HSSE performance. In fact, a director from the Company’s executive committee leads a review of any fatal accident that occurs in connection with Shell operations. To ensure more awareness around road safety, we have a minimum set of road safety requirements for Shell employees and our contractors. These requirements are focused on four key areas; leadership commitment, vehicle specifications, journey management, And driver behaviour. Shell has standardised global specifications for all trucks and equipment - we feel that it’s necessary if we are to meet the level of safety we expect. You can have all of the best equipment, procedures and rules in place – but the most important element is driver behaviour – it’s all about the person behind the steering wheel. Shell has thousands of drivers on the road each and every day. And these people are just like you and me – they may have had a poor night’s sleep, they may be running late, perhaps they are thinking about the upcoming weekend! They may be distracted for a wide variety of reasons. Road Safety initiatives:Global road safety initiatives that have proven to be highly successful include the implementation of IVMS - In Vehicle Monitoring Systems - These devices give real time data on speed, breaking, acceleration and centrifugal forces (especially important when you are transporting liquids). These systems help to give feedback to the drivers on their driving behaviours. Next to that we provide driver training learning events including defensive driving, fatigue management, rollover prevention, journey management and hearts and minds driver behaviourprogrammes. Our focusis to continually improve competence among all staff with a road transport related role – be it drivers, managers or supervisors. Next to global initiatives, we also implement project specific controls to mitigate road safety risks of projects. A number of our large projects have successfully reduced the amount of road travel needed. During construction at a chemical complex expansion we provided accommodation for personnel on the project site. For other projects we use buses to transport workers to reduce vehicle journeys. We also use marine vessels and rail cars to get vehicles and equipment off the road, which in turn also supports our goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. International and Regional Partnerships:Shell is working in partnerships with various organisations worldwide to help set industry standards and improve road safety. For example, through the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) we have developed a set of Land Transportation Safety Recommended Practices for our industry. We believe that following these practices can significantly reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities. Shell is also a member of the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), an organisation that brings together governments and governmental agencies, the private sector and civil society organisations to address road safety issues in low and middle income countries. I’d like to give you a quick example of GRSP in action. We are a partner in a major upstream and pipeline operation on Sakhalin Island operated by SEIC (Sakhalin Energy Investment Company). Established in 2005, The Sakhalin Road Safety Partnership is a network of more than thirty businesses, civil society organisations, police and government departments working together to develop and implement road safety projects. In June 2008, the Partnership reached its third birthday and completed a number of successful projects. These include: An island-wide seat belt campaign A programme to identify accident ‘black spots’ and develop low budget remediation measuresA pre-hospital care project; and aSafe Routes to School programme. Video monitoring conducted before and after the seatbelt campaign showed that the number of drivers and passengers using seat belts increased from just 3% in 2006 to 80% in 2008. That’s incredible! Only by working in partnership was this possible. The Sakhalin Road Safety Police enforced non-compliance of the rules, while Sakhalin Energy, with support from the GRSP, developed and implemented a broad awareness campaign. This was first of its kind to be run in Russia. This is just one of the many successful examples we have by working in partnerships in the areas in which we operate. Social Investment initiatives: We look at Social Investment as an opportunity to create additional benefits arising from our presence in the communities where we operate and generally speaking, we tend to favour themes where we feel we can help make a positive difference by working with others. As a theme, Road Safety possesses all those qualities: it’s a common concern for us and our stakeholders e.g. host communities, industry, partner governments, traffic authorities, NGOs; it’s something we can only address by working together; it requires active stakeholder engagement. This is why you’ll often find a road safety programme as part of the country social investment portfolio and why as a group, Shell has selected road safety as one of its key themes for Social Investment.
