Road accidents are a major problem in Bangladesh. Each year there are at least 3,000 fatalities and 3,000 serious injuries from around 3,500 reported accidents. The main causes of accidents are reckless driving behaviors like speeding, reckless overtaking, and using mobile phones while driving. Poor road infrastructure also contributes, as many roads are not properly designed for safety and lack features like sufficient width, footpaths, and safety turning areas. The economic cost of traffic accidents is estimated to be 2-3% of Bangladesh's GDP annually. Current accident statistics show that in the past year there were 6,581 reported accidents resulting in 8,642 deaths.
