Introduction
• A global phenomenon- 1.25 million die each year in
the world (WHO, 2016)
• Ninth leading cause of death in 1998
• Third leading cause of death and disabilities by
the year 2020 (WHO, 2000)
• In Bangladesh average 8 persons die everyday
• 12000 lives and 35000 injuries annually (ARI,2011)
• Economic cost is 2 to 3% of the country’s GDP , an
enormous loss in health related cost.(WHO, 2015)
Concept of Road Traffic Accident:
 Collisions between vehicles and pedestrians
 Between vehicles and animals
 Between vehicles and fixed objects (tree or pole)
 Result in injury, disability, death, and property damage
 Economic Commission for Europe ECE- “Road Traffic
Accidents are those accidents that occurs in a way or
street open to public traffic, resulted in one or more
persons being killed or injured, and at least one
moving vehicle is involved”
Road Traffic Accident: The Context of Global &
Developing Countries:
 About 1.25 million die and 20 to 50 million more people
suffer injuries globally.
 Second leading cause of death for people between the ages
of 5 and 29
 Third leading cause for people between 30 and 44.
 About 73% death occur among male
 500 children killed each day in road crashes
 90% of the world’s fatalities on the roads occur in
developing countries
 96% of total child deaths occur in developing countries
(WHO,2015)

Road Traffic Accidents in Bangladesh:
 Roads and highways are more prone to road accident
in BD
 Number of road traffic accident increases on the eve
of festivals
 In the last 21 years 84k road accidents occurred, killed
56k and injured 63k(BD police 2015)
 PWAB revealed that 8,642 were killed and 21,855
injured in road crashes in 2015
 10-15 people were killed every day in the year 2015
 13.6 people who are killed in RTA in every one lakh are
pedestrians
 The rate of hit pedestrians is 45% of all types of RTA
 The child involvement in RTA casualties and fatalities
are around 16 and 20 percent (the daily star 2012)
 World life expectancy 2015 said that, Bangladesh
ranking in RTA is #109
 1.6% of GDP loss due to RTA each year in BD
 Direct loss is estimated to be 50-60 billion in a
year(WHO 2015)
