2. TODAY’S LEARNING OUTCOMES
1
Personalize the Community
Gathering #3 Lesson Plan to your
community and presentation style
2
Articulate your personal
resilience level based on the
GRIT assessment
3. THOUGHTS?
“WE HAVE RAISED A GENERATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT BEEN
GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN HOW TO SOLVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS, TO
GET INTO TROUBLE AND FIND THEIR OWN WAY OUT, TO EXPERIENCE FAILURE
AND REALIZE THEY CAN SURVIVE IT, TO LEARN HOW TO RESPOND [TO
CHALLENGES] WITHOUT ADULT INTERVENTION.
SO NOW, HERE’S WHAT WE HAVE: YOUNG PEOPLE GOING TO COLLEGE STILL
UNABLE OR UNWILLING TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEMSELVES, STILL
FEELING THAT IF A PROBLEM ARISES THEY NEED AN ADULT TO SOLVE IT.”
Dr. Peter Gray, “Declining Student Resilience: A Serious Problem for Colleges”. Psychology Today. 9/22/15
8. REFLECT
PICK A GOAL THAT YOU HAVE BEEN
WORKING ON, WORKING TOWARD, OR
HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT BEGINNING BUT
HAVE NOT STARTED
9. REFLECT
• WHAT AREA OF MY LIFE DO I WANT TO
IMPROVE?
• WHAT IS THE VALUE TO ME (AND OTHERS)
WHEN IT’S IMPROVED?
• WHAT ARE MY BELIEFS ABOUT THIS? FROM
WHAT MINDSET HAVE THESE BELIEFS FORMED?
• WHAT BELIEFS AM I COMMITTED TO HOLDING
STARTING NOW?
• WHAT NEW MINDSET AM I NOW OPERATING
FROM TO CREATE THE RESULT I WANT?
11. DEBRIEF
• WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE OF MEASURING YOUR GRIT?
• WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE AN
UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR GRIT?
• HOW DOES UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT THAT
SOMETHING HAS ON YOUR LIFE MAKE YOU WANT TO
CONTINUE TO ACHIEVE A GOAL?
• HOW CAN GRIT HELP YOU OVERCOME ROADBLOCKS?
12. GRIT WORKSHEET TIPS
• TO BE SUSTAINABLE, WE DO NOT WANT TO MAKE COPIES OF THE WORKSHEET FOR EVERY RESIDENT.
• OPTIONS FOR SHARING QUESTIONS (CHOOSE ONE THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOUR COMMUNITY):
• WRITE QUESTIONS ON BUTCHER PAPER AND HANG IN YOUR MEETING SPACE FOR RESIDENTS TO SEE
• SEND OUT QUESTIONS OVER COMMUNITY GROUPME
• WRITE QUESTIONS ON A WHITEBOARD (IF AVAILABLE)
• SEND QUESTIONS OUT OVER EMAIL PRIOR TO COMMUNITY GATHERING.
13. REFLECT
• HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR RESIDENTS WILL RESPOND TO THIS
CONTENT?
• BASED ON WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THE RESIDENTS, HOW CAN
YOU PERSONALIZE THIS LESSON PLAN TO YOUR COMMUNITY?
• HOW COMFORTABLE DO YOU FEEL PRESENTING THE MATERIAL?
• WHAT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/RESOURCES DO YOU NEED?
• HOW WILL YOU PREPARE FOR COMMUNITY GATHERING #3?
ASK: What are your immediate reactions to this quote?
What point(s) do you agree with or disagree with?
What, if anything, is a college’s responsibility to ensure that students develop resilience during their college career?
What is resilience?

Running Time: 6 minutes, 12 seconds
Link to Grit Scale is above. Students should complete prior to class.
Suggestions
Place large post-it notes around the room with GRIT scale whole number scores (0.0/1.0-5.0). Ask students to group up at the score that they received on the inventory. Best if the post-it notes are placed in a horizontal line to reflect the Likert scale scoring
Discuss in large group
Pair & Share (may be more comfortable to share result with a peer instead of the full class)
Key Point: the GRIT scale developed by Duckworth is useful as a prompt for self-reflection. Like any inventory, it has limitations. It is not to be used for selection criteria, admission to college, etc. because of its response and reference biases.
2-5 minutes
Give students time (5 minutes) to reflect on these questions (simply thinking, writing, whatever works best for the individual). These are the grit worksheet questions that RM’s residents will complete during the Community Gathering.
These are the questions RMs will ask their residents as part of the debriefing exercise in CG #3.
