2. INSPIRE A SHARED VISION
•COMMITMENT #3 –
ENVISION THE FUTURE BY
IMAGINING EXCITING AND
ENNOBLING POSSIBILITIES
3. INSPIRE A SHARED VISION
•BEFORE WE CAN INSPIRE OTHERS,
LEADERS NEED TO HAVE A CLEAR,
PURPOSEFUL VISION.
•IN ORDER TO BRING CLARITY TO
ONE’S VISION, IT’S NOT ONLY
IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER THE END
RESULT BUT ALSO WHAT IT’S GOING
TO TAKE TO GET THERE.
4. REFLECT
•THINK OF A LEADER THAT YOU ADMIRE
WHO HAD A VISION OF THE FUTURE THAT
DREW YOU IN. WHAT MADE THE VISION
COMPELLING AND EXCITING TO YOU?
5. •VISION IS DEFINED AS AN IDEAL
UNIQUE IMAGE OF THE FUTURE FOR
THE COMMON GOOD
•REQUIRES THAT THE LEADER HAVE
A VISION OF THE FUTURE THAT
BENEFITS OTHERS, NOT JUST THEM
6. •VISIONING CANNOT JUST BE ABOUT
WHAT YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH.
YOU NEED TO HAVE A GOOD
UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR RESIDENTS
(NEEDS, CHALLENGES, MOTIVATIONS)
WHEN CASTING A VISION.
•VISUALIZE THE DETAILS – NOT JUST OF
THE IDEA, BUT HOW TO GET THERE AND
EACH STEP ALONG THE WAY.
7. INSPIRE A SHARED VISION
•COMMITMENT #4 – ENLIST
OTHERS IN A COMMON
VISION BY APPEALING TO
SHARED ASPIRATIONS

11. DESCRIBE HOW YOU ENVISION YOUR COMMUNITY IN MAY 2018. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
• WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOUR RESIDENTS EXPERIENCED? WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR RESIDENTS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED? HOW DO
YOU SEE YOUR RESIDENTS GROWING/LEARNING BECAUSE OF THEIR INVOLVEMENT WITHIN THE COMMUNITY? WHAT
CONNECTIONS HAVE YOUR RESIDENTS MADE ON CAMPUS/HOW HAVE THEY INVESTED IN CAROLINA?
• AT THE END OF THE YEAR, I ENVISION THE GROUP TO BE…
• OTHERS WOULD DESCRIBE MY COMMUNITY AS…
• THE RESIDENTS HAVE GROWN BY…
• WHAT ARE THREE THINGS THE GROUP WILL NEED TO FOCUS ON TO GET TO THIS VISION?
• WHAT WERE THREE SPECIFIC THINGS I DID TO HELP THE GROUP GET THERE?
• I WILL COMMUNICATE THIS VISION ON A REGULAR BASIS BY…
REFLECTION

Before we can inspire others, leaders need to have a clear, purposeful vision. We often consider our goals and think about our dreams, but we don’t spend time really thinking about what they look and feel like. In order to bring clarity to one’s vision, it’s not only important to consider the end result but also what it’s going to take to get there.
What did the leader do or say to help you get on board/buy into the vision?
Leaders use stories and metaphors to connect with others and bring their visions to life. What is the story that you tell about your role as an RM?
ASK: How do you residents know what the vision is? How have you shared it? If you haven’t shared it, how can you do that? How have you included residents in creating a vision?
The six behavior statements above are associated with “Inspire a Shared Vision”.
Pay particular attention to and discuss with your class the following statements:
“Higher Purpose/Meaning” (#3)
What is MY WHY? The Department’s why?
How do I discuss Foundations with my residents?
How do I utilize the A-Frame in my interactions with residents?
“Working Toward a Common Goal” (#4)
What is the common goal within my community?
“How Things Can Be Better in the Future” (#5)
How do I encourage others to create positive change through advocacy in our community?
The Student Leadership Practices Inventory will give students a good idea of where they are already practicing the behavior statements with frequency, and where they may want to devote additional attention.
