Chromebook Advantages And Disadvantages
We ve all heard about electronics in schools, whether you are a parent who has been called repeatedly
about your kid being glued to it in class or one of said students, it has been present. The Chromebook
has been regarded as a way to revolutionize learning, but it also has a slew of consequences. So we are
left with the everlasting question of whether or not it is a viable method of learning.
It can be seen that there are obvious disadvantages in the system, but some other effects, whether it
has to do with health, the environment, or costs, go unnoticed by the general populous. In a study done
by the American Optometric Association, it is shown that using computers in school increases the
odds of a problem called Computer Vision Syndrome, which causes problems such as headaches,
eyestrain, dry eyes, and blurred vision. Another medical problem has been given the lovely name Text
Neck . It is a condition that is caused by exerting more pressure on the upper vertebrae of the spine,
which causes wear and tear on the spine and could result in mass amounts of pain or required surgery.
Also to be noted, it takes 79 gallons of water, 33 pounds of miscellaneous minerals, and 100 kilowatt
hours of energy, while printing a textbook requires about 2 kilowatt hours of energy and two thirds of
a pound of materials. While we re on the subject, let s talk about costs. While textbooks may seem
expensive, they require very little for upkeep, not to mention things like networking and

The Department Of Defense Subcontracting Plan Programs,...
This paper will elaborate the Department of Defense subcontracting plan programs, Acts, and policies
that are in effect. Furthermore, will detail the type of subcontracting plans, when they apply,
procedures, and routing given by the Federal Acquisition Regulation. Following will explain how
subcontracting plans are utilized in source selections, the economic impacts subcontracting has on
small businesses, and how subcontracting plans are managed.
Acts and Policies The Small Business Act, and subsequent reassuring public laws direct that the
Government place a fair portion of its acquisitions, including contracts and subcontracts for
subsystems, assemblies, components, and related services for major systems, with Small Business
concerns, HUBZone Small Business, Small Disadvantaged Business, Women Owned Small Business,
Veteran Owned Small Business, Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business, Historically Black
Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Council
Universities. Federal Policy FAR 19.201(a) states that it is the policy of the Government to provide
maximum practicable opportunities in its acquisitions to small business, veteran owned small
business, service disabled veteran owned small business, HUBZone small business, small
disadvantaged business, and women owned small business concerns. Such concerns must also have

The Trading Dynamics of Institutional Investors
The fraction of corporate equity owned by institutional investors has grown considerably in the past
several decades; institutional holding of shares in U.S. equities has increased from approximately 16%
in 1965 to over 50% in 2010 (Federal Reserve Board, 2011). The fact that institutional investors are
managing such a sizable wealth invested in U.S. equity market has potential important role in term of
setting market prices. The growing impact of institutional investors on capital markets has induced to
increased research on the behavior of this group of investors both by academics and policy makers,
who tend to believe that institutional investor follow momentum based strategies, and often are
alleged to herdinglike behavior and following destabilizing trading strategies.
Recent studies investigating the behavior of institutional investors document three main results. First,
institutional investors are momentum traders (buying past winners and selling past losers) and are
more likely to follow past prices (citet*{grinblatt1995momentum}). Second, Institutional investors
sometimes trade in the same direction over a period of time or engage in herding behavior
(citet{wermers1999mutual}). Finally, the contemporaneous association between changes in quarterly
institutional holding and quarterly stock returns is much stronger than the feedback trading effect
(citet{nofsinger1999herding,wermers1999mutual}).
The previous studies on the behavior of institutional investors

Analyzing The Primary Features Of Eukaryotic Cells

Lab Report 1
Abstract
The objective of this lab was to observe prepared bacterial cells and to observe and describe the
primary features of eukaryotic cells. Also, we investigated the effect of concentration gradient and
temperature on the rate of osmosis in an artificial system. Finally, we investigated the effect of solute
concentration on the tonicity of cells in plant tissue and Elodea. The purpose of our experiments was
to find out whether the effect of concentration gradient on the rate of osmosis had a greater effect than
temperature on the rate of osmosis. The purpose of the Elodea experiment was to see if a five percent
solution of sodium chloride or distilled water effected the structure of the Elodea.
To observe the primary features of a eukaryotic cell we used a compound microscope. We tested the
effect concentration gradients had on the rate of osmosis two ways: with potato tissue and with
dialysis tubes. We used potato slices, paper towels, bowls, sodium chloride (at different concentration
levels), and a scale to test potato tissue. We used dialysis tubing, sucrose solution (10% and 40%
concentration gradients), plastic clips, bags, distilled water, and a scale to test the rate of osmosis with
dialysis tubes. To test the solute concentration on the tonicity of cells in plant tissue and Elodea, we
used Elodea, water, sodium chloride solution, tap water, a coverslip, and Kimwipe

Conversion Therapy And Its Effects On The Lgbtq Community
About 30 years ago, homosexuality was declassified as a mental disorder. It would be assumed that
treatments for to change homosexuality would end. However, conversion therapy is still being used
today, even our future Vice President, Mike Pence, believes in such treatment. That alone is a huge
threat to people of the LGBTQ+ community.
Conversion therapy is affecting the LGBTQ+ community greatly. Conversion therapy can be defined
as psychological interventions, from behavioral methods to psychoanalytic approaches to change a
person s sexuality or gender identity (Hadelman, pg. 202, 2002). This treatment has been proven to
not work as well as having harmful implications to LGBTQ+ people. In 1960, the conversion therapy
movement began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
NARTH heavily relies on the support of Southern Baptist, Mormon, Roman Catholic, and other
religious organizations to promote conversion of homosexuality (Baxter, pg. 1, 2015).
Love in Action, which was one of the first religious based organizations to participate in conversion
therapy, was founded in 1973. By 1976, Exodus, a national coalition of ex gay ministries was founded.
There were hundreds of participates over the years and most went back to homosexual life.
Interestingly enough, ex gay ministries do not keep statistics on the success of their work. However,
outside observers founded that at least two thirds of those in such groups give up within two years,
and that over seventy five percent of ex gay organizations fail within five years (Baxter, pg. 2, 2015).
There are also no peer reviewed articles that display any kind of success with conversion therapy.
Even the cases that ex gay ministries consider a person cure is when that person is asexual and refrains
from any sexual encounters. This in turn is only a change in behavior, not sexual orientation. Giving
ex gay ministries any type of push forward is
Most practitioners reject the idea of conversion therapy. However, there are still medical and health
organization that continue to conduct conversion therapy. Some examples of what one can go through
during this treatment can include application of electric shock to the hands and/or genitals, or nausea
inducing drugs, which would be

An Analysis Of Hazel s Character In East Of Eden
Hazel throughout the story shows immense leadership by being compassionate and caring, and always
doing what s best for the rabbits and their well being. Early in the story, Hazel noticed and kept watch
on a smaller rabbit named Pipkin. Pipkin was one of the smallest rabbits in the Sandleford warren and
became very scared easily. Going with Fiver and Hazel was a tough decision for him because he knew
he was small and it would be tough for him to keep up. Hazel mentored and helped Pipkin throughout
the the journey and gave Pipkin hope. Through Hazel s compassion and mentorship, he was able to
encourage others to persevere through the tough times. Before the rabbit s left the warren, Pipkin was
even afraid to leave his burrow without someone

Nature And Nature Of Frederick Douglass
Nature has always been with Frederick Douglass even on his journey throughout his life. Nature lived
amongst the other slaves as well. When being a slave at a plantation or being owned period, you
become familiar with nature; if it is picking cotton, tobacco, corn, and wheat (Douglass 22) or if it is
learning how to steer ox s or learning how to drive a boat. Nature is with everything we do; nature is
everything anyway because we are nature. We are just part of the huge spectrum of nature. Frederick
Douglass was put to the test since the day he was born; becoming a slave by birth. His life was the
caste system, no mobility whatsoever. His life is a low as the ground between his toes when the
plantation owners only gave them a certain amount of clothing and accessories. Nature was everything
and the only thing he had, as if they were best friends. This paper will give you the insight on how
nature was to Frederick Douglass and the other slaves. In the end, I can argue that nature has always
been with Frederick Douglass and other slaves and will always be with them. Frederick Douglass
became first involved with nature when his mother took the opportunity to sneak out into the night to
have her only chance at seeing her son. When the sky was pitch black and no one could see or care
any less. She took her only opportunity to walk a great distance to spend the night with her boy in her
arms. She even took punishment when arriving late at sunrise for her boy. Nature allowed

The Ways the British Government Attempted to Hide the Effects of the Blitz from the People
For the British civilians bearing the home front of the Blitz was both a frightening and surreal
experience. In Britain, most people expect to be told the truth, and newspapers and radios are allowed
to speak the facts. However once the country was at war it all changed, and the British people had to
accept that the Government who took control of the media was for the good of the country. Specific
facts and details of bombings weren t shown in the whole truth, and often the news was twisted to
focus on the heroism of the British. This became known as propaganda and censorship, and were tools
to keep the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was used in countries like Germany and Italy and was done using great force, whereas in Great
Britain it needed to be subtler. By using government guidelines the media censored itself, however the
government would step in if these rules were broken. In either Democracies or Dictatorships the result
was the same any information that may affect morale and the war effort was to be banned.
So the Government needed to have the full support of the media in order to Brain wash the people of
Britain, and if the media did not co operate then newspapers and magazines were closed down. At the
start of WW2 the Government set up the Ministry of Information to control what was being said to the
British public. It was the job of the ministry to persuade people that victory was at hand despite the
massive destruction and death toll around them. This was opened in September 1939, and from August
1941 was helped by the Political Warfare Executive, in order to produce mostly black propaganda
aimed at other countries. Propaganda faced no restrictions, and all governments were prepared to lie to
help them win the war. One of the aims was to reach a conclusion without first examining the
information. The two most important uses of propaganda were to praise one side, which were fighting
for the right reasons, and to also

Though Sophriona soon realizes the true meaning of the part Finishing. It means the Art of Killing

the fourth most commonly isolated organism from blood cultures. It is also the most common cause of

Religious Language And Non Cognitive Language
Religious language is essentially the communication about religious ideas, faith and belief.
Significantly religious language refers to the terms and phrases we use when discussing God and his
nature; it is an attempt to talk about God using our non cognitive language. Religious language falls
into two categories; cognitive and non cognitive. Cognitive language expresses facts and knowledge
that can be proved to be either true or false. Whereas, non cognitive language expresses things which
are neither true nor false. There is a debate whether religious language is truly meaningful because the
concept of God is something other and timeless , yet we only talk of things using our knowledge that
is acquired through our sense experience. Therefore, if something is other and timeless , technically is
it not part of our experience and thus how can we talk about it?
Firstly, it can be argued that religious language has been proven to be meaningful. The Via Negativa ,
or The Negative Way is a way of talking about God which focuses on saying what he is not rather than
what he is. It is based on the idea that because God is transcendent, we cannot therefore speak of him.
However, we can clearly say what he is not. It s a bit like the game Guess Who , as once we know
what God is not, we can work out what he is. The Via Negativa was put forward by Pseudo Dionysius
in a book called Mystical Theology . This is a good way to approach the subject of God, since our
language is

Essay on Technology Advancement and The Music Industry
Dust Off Your Vinyls, We re Going Back In Time
Music is a part of life for every culture and every generation. From just about the start of mankind we
have made music and with every technological advancement, we have evolved the way music is
heard, made, and distributed. Within the last couple decades I have witnessed the music industry
change drastically from cassette tapes to digital mp3s. What caused this dramatic evolution of music?
What are the effects on the industry itself, and the consumers like you?
Music has taken new forms many times in it s history. Not only in sound, but shape. According to Dr.
Tom McCort, who has a Ph. D and teaches at the University of Texas, the term album comes from the
78 rpm discs that only had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though this was a incredible new way to share music and was a non profit service, it brought up
legal issues with recording companies. The content exchanged was under copyright laws and was
being illegally shared. The sales of music were being threatened, and Napster was brought to court.
Napster wasn t in the safe zone of the law with sharing these files, because they were not considered
fair use, and was shut down. (Crews, 5)
In the article Music Industry Sales Rise, and Digital Music Revenue Gets the Credit, Eric Pfanner,
who is the London Bureau Chief of the International Herald Tribune, states that back in 1999 at the
peak of the music industry, sales were at $38 billion in revenue. Last year, the number was more that
half that at a low $16.5 billion. That may sound horrible, but it actually was the first time sales rose in
nearly two decades. (Pfanner, 1) But my question is why? What changed in the last year compared to
the last fifteen? Well, the concept of being able to get music directly from the internet to your
computer was not only convenient for consumers, but also the companies themselves. That is because
the delivery costs were minimized, not having to produce and send to stores. Since piracy was still a
very big problem, the industry frowned upon the idea of digital distribution at first. But the concept of

Trichotillomania Onset Pregnancy
Introduction:
Trichotillomania is characterized by recurrent episodes of hair pulling behavior leading to noticeable
loss of hair, increasing tension before hair pulling or while coping with the urge to pull out hair, taking
pleasure or a sense of relief while pulling out hair, and social, occupational, and functional
impairment1.
Trichotillomania can involve any area in the body; however, the most common areas are the scalp,
followed by the eyebrows and eyelashes in children and in adults2. The seriousness of the pulling
behavior is perceived over time, and the disease exhibits a chronic course and it is resistant to
therapy3. It has been reported that patients with trichotillomania often did not feel pain while pulling
out hair, followed a particular pattern of hair pulling, and often chose strands with unusual appearance,
and exhibit repetitive behavior such as engaging oral stimulation after hair pulling4 5. Some studies
have suggested that trichotillomania had many common features with obsessive compulsive disorder4
5.Here we discuss a patient with trichotillomania onset pregnanacy case.
Case :
KD is a 19 years old female, married, secondary school graduate who is currently unemployed. The
patient was admitted to the juvenile outpatient clinic accompanied by her parents with the complaints
of anxiety and pulling out eyebrow that lasted for 2 weeks. It was realized that the patient did not have
similar past complaints, or she has not been admitted to the psychiatry

Buddhism Suffer From Other Religions Essay
How Buddhism Differs from Other Religions?
Buddhism is the most famous non theistic religion for many reasons, one being tolerant of other
people s beliefs. Unlike many religious organizations, Buddhists do not believe that people who have
faith in deities are not going to be saved . In fact, there is no mention of salvation in Buddhist
teachings, simply because there is not much talk of the world ending. Although Buddhists believe in
the dualities of good and evil , it is often described as the struggle of one s self when faced with the
dilemma of giving in to temptation or not. Here are some other things that differentiate Buddhism
from other religions:
1. Buddhists do not worship idols Although the images and statues of Buddha can be seen around the
world, those are just made to remind everyone that he is the man who first found the way to
enlightenment. Buddhists do not ask the Buddha statues for favors when they ... Show more content

Buddhists do not try to convert people who belong to other religions Because Buddhism is tolerant of
other religions, they do not ask people to join them. Buddhism agrees with many teachings found in
the doctrines of other religions. It is known all over the world that those who converted to Buddhism
sought the religion. They were not invited to attend a religious activity, nor influenced to question
their own religion. This is one of the reasons why there hasn t been any religious conflict that involves
Buddhists.
3. Wisdom, peace and happiness, not salvation Unlike other religions that highlight the concept of
final judgment, Buddhists do not instill fear in people. Members of some religious organizations are
fearful of not being saved when the fated day comes, so they follow the teachings of their religion, in
hopes of securing a spot on the to be saved list. In Buddhism, the goal is to achieve wisdom, peace and
happiness. Whatever happens will happen, but if one has the wisdom, peace and happiness, there will

THE ROAD PAST ALTAMONT
Book Analysis
Theme: Evolution of mother and daughter relationship
A book The Road Past Altamont by Gabrielle Roy was first published in French in the year 1966
(Dillman, 115). The subject of the book penetrates to the heart of a Child s in depth world, forming a
subtle, yet considerable linkage of impressions, feelings, and relationships. The nous style of the
writer Roy, whose literature imitates her infantile on the Canadian steppe, has often been compared
with others. The book entails the four significant stories which are related to the young girl named
Christine, from the period for her innocence to maturity. According to the understanding of this book,
the purpose of this piece of literature is to make others understand the importance and power of the
development of the relationship between a mother and a daughter. Moreover, in her writing, Gabrielle
Roy allowed nothing peripheral or false to stand, according to many. The four allied stories divulge
reflective moments during her early years in the massiveness of Manitoba. However, all the mentioned
characters and events express writer s obsession with childhood till the old age, the passage of the
time as well as the mystery of change, and the artist s relation to the world.
After the reading of this book The Road Past Altamont , there are many various themes which can be
related to it. A relevant and related theme of the book can be the evolution

Family Origin Theory In Anne Of Green Gables
Within the movie Anne of Green Gables there is a compelling demonstration of the Family Origin
theory. As Anne Shirley grows up and becomes married she is influenced by the parents who adopted
her. As she is adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert (who are siblings) when she is eleven years
old, she acquires attributes from each of them that are carried on throughout her life. Although she was
adopted as a young teenager she never truly had a family to begin with so her adoption into this family
became her Family of Origin. The boldness and directness Anne developed came from her mother
Marilla whereas her kind, giving, and hardworking attributes came from her father Matthew. Her
father Matthew created a memory in her life as he died when she was only sixteen. This event
impacted her life immensely as she tried to live like he would. These qualities and memories carried
over into her career as a teacher as well as into her marriage with Gilbert Blythe.
The Family of Origin Theory impacts many individuals as they carry on the attributes found in the
family they originated from. According to the Figure 11.1 in the Marriages and Families textbook,
Anne s family would most likely be classified as a structurally connected family. This theory
encompasses everything from talents, attitudes, values, and their future relationships. Anne Shirley is a
good example of how her family influenced her behavior and choices as she grew older.
As a teacher Anne Shirley encountered many events where she exhibited kindness and courtesy just as
her father did. She gave respect even to the youngest of the students when they were bullied and
picked on during school as well as showing respect in disciplining the bully. She found value in each
of them just as Matthew Cuthbert had in those around him. Anne was also a bold and direct teacher
because of the discipline that came from her mother Marilla. She often stood up for her students when
they felt misunderstood or unwanted. Anne s Family of Origin allowed her to become a better teacher
because of her experiences in her family growing up.
As a young child growing up with Matthew and Marilla, Anne began life with a temper and couldn t
stop accusing others of hurting her and making

Animal Cloning Extinct Animals
My research is about the art of cloning cloning includes all things that are living. People have created
a way to clone things. What they have to do is they have to get a mature somatic cell from what they
wish to copy then they put the somatic cell in an egg cell that has its nucleus removed.Scientists have
created a lot of things from a big deer to a tiny little mouse and they are all cloned from the process
that I had mentioned at the top. They are also able to clone a lot more things than just those that I had
mentioned it is even a possibility that they could clone humans and have they already no one knows
only the people that have created them.
Cloning Extinct Animals
There are a lot of animals that are going extinct every day and there might be a way to not stop it but
we could clone the animals that are starting to go extinct. When we clone them we could have more of
those extinct animals. The way scientists or other people who wish to clone could clone animals that
are already extinct
Is that if we have some type of DNA of that animal we could do the same process that they use to
clone animals and that will clone that animal that is extinct and they could reproduce more
animals. Then they will be able to protect them and there won t be that much extinct animals. The
process that they use is called interspecies nuclear transfer and that is what they call it when they
clone an endangered animal. They way that it works is the same way they clone any other living thing

Becoming A Store Manager For Big O Tire Essay
In 2007, I was a mortgage originator and after the fall of the mortgage market I decided to make my
way back to the automotive world by becoming a store manager for Big O Tire. I was a store manager
for Evans Tire in the past and I knew that I could generate enough income to support my family
managing a service center again. I have seen a lot of automobiles come through the service bay doors
throughout the years with long overdue vehicle maintenance. One group of vehicle owners seems to
be the worst defenders of them all. The way BMW owners neglect their prized possession is an
incredibly deplorable act. I remembered having to explain to these narcissistic vehicle owners why
they needed to pay extra money for synthetic oil and how skipping it just this once would not be okay.
One gentlemen in particular used to put his dirty engine air filter in front of his beaming headlights
and would love to look to see if the light would shine through. It passed the test put it back! He used to
say every time with such passion. Of course, he thought he was saving money on frivolous air filters,
not thinking of the hidden cost of his fuel mileage. The majority of Americans have a vast problem
with the over consumption of fuel while over paying at the pump. It s not just buying the correct grade
gasoline at the pump that needs to be addressed, the desire to increase the miles per gallon on the
vehicles we drive is also important. The average American does not seem to make

My Family As An Extended Family
Introduction From an early age I placed a very high value on being a part of my family. At first it was
most likely feeling safe and secure. That being said, I had the logical realization that family was
important. Of special importance were grandparents and the extended family members. Being born in
a town where both sets of grandparents resided in addition to all the rest of my extended family was
very comforting to me. Being the first born grandchild had its advantages. I became very attached to
all the grandparents and enjoyed love, attention and quality time frequently until the first grade when
we moved. When my younger sister was born, I never felt replaced or left out because of the quality
time my grandparents invested in me. Even after my family moved a state away we always went back
for holidays, birthdays and summer vacations. I have a great deal of wonderful memories from my
childhood. My mother s father, my grandfather, was a very large presence in the community. He was
well respected in both the white as well as the black community in which he owned a grocery store.
This was unusual because there was a lot of racial tension and discrimination in Southern Alabama in
the 1960 s. He was a tall man at six foot five and was a hard worker. He often bailed people out of jail
and helped them with food when they were financially strapped anonymously. He was a Sunday
school teacher and had good moral values. I learned later that before I came along he had been an
alcoholic, a smoker, had been known for his quick temper, was not religious and had been unfaithful
to my grandmother. As it was told to me, one Sunday morning he got up, got dressed, went to church
and never took another drink or smoked again and was a radically changed man. He became a kind,
caring, charitable person. He was more of a father to me in many ways than my dad and we had long
talks in which he stressed the important things in life. He and my grandmother took my sister and I
fishing on the lake. We camped in the camper. We stayed for vacations at the Gulf of Mexico. The
stories he told, lessons I learned and loving affection he genuinely offered is something I consider a
gift I have never forgotten. The reason I never forgot is

Analysis Of Borderlands By Gloria Anzaldua
Speaking of Texas U.S. Southwest/Mexican border, the first thing appears in many people s mind is a
horizontal line with US on the upper side and Mexico on the lower, as depicted in maps. However, in
reality, a border serves more than just to separate states. In many occasions, it witnesses and bridges
social networks that stretch across border. These two functions seem to contradict each other but in
fact they exactly reflect the complex nature of borders, or, more realistically, borderlands, a term
coined to uproot in people the misleading image of a line. In her book Borderlands, the author Gloria
Anzaldua, as a descendent of Indians and Mexicans living close to the America Mexico border in
Southern Texas, defies such dualistic and simplistic thinking about the border/double sided or multi
sided dilemma, suggesting a new mestiza consciousness , a tolerance of ambiguity and a way of
creating new personal culture from her accounting with all three cultures, as opposed to adopting only
one of them without independent thinking and confronting against the rest. This new way of thinking
stems from the reality of borderlands but instead of stopping there the author expands its application
to establishing both cultural and sexual identities.
For Anzaldua, any borderland is a place of contradictions (preface 19), rendering border residents to
suffer from constant insecurity and perplexity as they struggle to keep their multiple identities intact.
Nonetheless, as she writes

Self Reliance Is Beneficial Or Beneficial
An issue regarding thinking has been on the importance of self reliance, the notion of relying on
oneself for ideas and knowledge. Some people argue that self reliance is harmful. From this
perspective, self reliance generates bad thoughts and ideas, and people should conform to society
instead. However, others argue that self reliance is extremely important for society. Ralph Waldo
Emerson, a main proponent of this view, says that To believe your own thought, to believe that what is
true for you in your private heart is true for all men that is genius (1). According to this view, relying
on one s own ideas is genius, and it is much smarter to practice self reliance rather than conform to
society s ideas. In sum, then, the issue is whether self reliance is beneficial or not beneficial. My view
is that self reliance is beneficial. Though I concede that at times it may be a good idea to agree with
the majority, I still maintain that one s own ideas are much better than those of the majority almost all
of the time. Although some people think that the majority opinion is usually correct, I claim that the
notion of self reliance is beneficial because individuals should rely on their own knowledge gained
from life experience to create new and better ideas, which cause society to move forward and become
better than it was before.
Self reliance is beneficial because individuals create ideas that are better compared to those of the
majority. Emerson explains the importance of

Assessment and Nurses
Module Assessment The aim of this assignment is to explore the four stages of APIE, explaining their
importance in nursing, as well as identifying possible problems within the stages, in relation to the
videos of Joe. These issues will then be anaylsed using theory, to create possible explanations and
consequences for the behaviour and actions shown by Joe and the nurses. APIE is a nursing process
which guides health professionals through the problem solving approach, which promotes the
individualised, holistic delivery of care. It is tailored around the patient s needs and allows nurses to
holistically assess the patient, then plan and set goals according to the information gathered. These
plans and goals are then implemented into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stage Two autonomy is also undermined as he is not given the independence of choosing him own
meals or choosing what time he wakes up or eats breakfast. This shows that Joe was not assessed in
accordance with his age. To rectify this problem, Joe needs to be made more autonomous, given
encouragement to use the urinal instead of a catheter and allowing him to make his own choices. The
government White Paper (2006) focuses on the need for individualised care and calls for service to be
tailored around the needs of the individual and not the service provider. It aims to place the individual
in control of their life and promote independence, by providing a more flexible service, with a view to
a reaching and fulfilling a healthy old age. In addition, violence, stress and abuse which pose a threat
to an individual s overall well being, must be identified and addressed. The nurses did not view Joe as
an individual because they did not give him the opportunity to choose what he wanted to eat, or allow
him to get dressed before leaving his room. To adopt a more individualised approach, the nurses
should have let him choose what tine to get up in a morning, allowing him to get dressed and further
choose what he wanted to eat for breakfast, therefore adhering to The White Paper guidelines.

Nowadays there are many successful companies in the world, but the fact is that Walmart Inc. is the
most competent in their industry. Their strategies and business model have led them to achieve success
and make them the worlds largest retailer. In this essay I will analyze Walmarts business model and
how their succes has affected to the Corporate Social Responsibility.
First of all, what does Corporate Social Responsibility means? When we are talking about corporate
responsibility, we talk about active and voluntary social, economic and environmental improvement
contribution from companies, with the aim of improving their competitive position and their added
value.

Washburn Women s Venture Partners: Proposal for Grant Funding: the iRead Common Reading
Program Purpose: The iRead common reading program at Washburn University was developed to
enhance the educational experience of the students and the greater Washburn/Topeka community.
Common reading programs merge the curricular and cocurricular components of college and reinforce
the message that learning occurs both inside and outside the classroom.* Such programs help students
understand that reading, critical thinking, discussion, and other activities are expected in college and
contribute to learning.* Reading can promote more meaningful learning. According to results from the

Since that time, those funds were not replaced and further budget cuts were made. In short, much of
the money for the program was gone. A book was selected for 2009 and used in some courses, but we
were unable to bring the author in for a speaking engagement (the primary cost of the program). Each
of the previous years cost approximately $15,000. The small amount of funding still available for the
program was just not adequate to provide for bringing in the author. Objectives: Develop a
cohesiveness between students (especially the entering freshman class). No matter what classes they
are taking or various activities in which they participate, they will all have a common experience of
reading the iRead book. Once again, encourage as many instructors as possible to utilize the book in
their curriculum. (This was especially successful in the past with the English and Human Services
departments.) Provide additional cocurricular activities, such as Mondays at the Mabee events, to
promote and expand upon the book and its topics. Bring the author to campus as a culminating activity
for the Washburn and Topeka community. Benefits/Outcomes: The success of this program will, once
again, be measured by a combination of the following: Was the book used by a variety of instructors
across the discipline areas? How many books did the WU Bookstore sell? Did we have a variety of
supplemental activities during the fall semester

The short story The Leap by Louise Erdrich implies that sometimes leaps and risks need to be taken.
The narrator starts off the story focusing on her blind mother, who was a circus performer, and then
begins to realize how her mother had always taken risks in her life. The narrator recalls stories of her
mother taking leaps and risks. For example, one day when her mother was working as part of a trapeze
act in a circus show, a freak lightning bolt struck the tent pole during a performance. Unfortunately,
her mother s hands did not meet her husband s, so she took off her blindfold and, instead of latching

The Mozart Effect and Infant Intelligence
In modern society intelligence is highly competitive and subject to scrutiny; therefore, it is
understandable that a child s intelligence is a primary concern for many parents. The Mozart effect,
popularised in the 1990s, resulted in many parents believing that simply exposing their child to music
composed by Mozart would improve their intelligence (Campbell, 1997). The claim was founded by
research published in the journal Nature, which suggested that spatial reasoning could be temporarily
enhanced by listening to one of Mozart s compositions for ten minutes (Rauscher, Shaw Ky, 1993). It
will be argued that there is not sufficient evidence to support the claim that playing Mozart to babies
will increase their intelligence. Firstly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A study intending to emulate the results expressed in the original study was performed on preschool
aged children exposing them to similar variables as those in the original study (Hui, 2007). The study
showed no empirical evidence that listening to Mozart is more beneficial for children than ulterior
conditions (Hui, 2007). This disproves the belief that listening to Mozart makes a child smarter also
making the generalization from the Rauscher et al (1993) inconclusive. There are also a number of
other factors that have been overlooked when comparing the finding of the original study to the
Mozart effect in children. Another discerning factor expressed in the original study was the test used
to assess intelligence between the participants. The portion of the Stanford Binet test used in the
original study focuses on one aspect of intelligence, namely, spatial reasoning (Rauscher et al, 1993).
Therefore, it would be invalid to assume that high scores on this specific test delineate an increase in
overall general intelligence. The test itself is also bias as specific cultures outperform others, as
cultural environment has an influence on intelligence, which may lead to deficits in the results found
(Weinberg, 1989). Sternberg (2004) found that IQ tests are effective at predicting academic success in
western individuals but are not conclusive measures of overall intelligence or ability to succeed.
Gardner (1999) also proposed that IQ test also

Many have heard of terrorism in the Middle East, and all of the conflict that it has caused. There are

Summary Of A Separate Peace By John Knowles
In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, many things are shown about friendship. It shows us
how friendship is not always easy and how jealousy, competition and irrational thinking can disrupt a
seemingly strong and secure friendship. On the surface of Gene and Finny s friendship, it seemed that
they were the best of friends and that they did not have any problems. But, all of this changed with
time as most things do. Gene explains, we were best friends at that moment (page
18). This foreshadows how their seemingly extraordinary friendship is going to change. A common
feeling Gene has towards Finny is jealousy. Finny is an athletic, charismatic, and smooth boy who
seems to be able to get out of just about any situation he is put in. ... Show more content on

Along with Gene s newfound thinking, he also begins to act differently. After the accident, Gene
isolates himself. Gene explains, I spent as much time as I could alone in our room, trying to empty my
mind of every thought, to forget where I was, even who I was (page 62).
This quote represents the change in Gene s behavior. Before he was always out with his group of
friends, and now he isolates and tries to forget himself. In friendship, communication of these
thoughts are necessary. But, at Devon this form of communication is frowned upon. For example,
Gene says, exposing a sincere emotion nakedly like that at the Devon School was the next thing to
suicide (page
48). Gene is explaining how expressing emotions is not something that happens at
Devon. Suppression of this much emotion leads to built up feelings later causing Gene to express
these feelings in unpredictable ways later causing Phineas to fall off the tree. A Separate Peace shows
a lot about friendship. Throughout the novel, the reflection of friendship is commonly displayed. It
shows that friendship is not easy. It also shows how jealousy, competition, irrational thinking can twist
and turn solid relationships between

Inflation Is The Price Of Money Goes Up
In 1923 Germany set a record, a record that no other nation wishes to near or beat. In that year,
Germany s prices rose a trillion times over. Prices rose so fast that workers had to take shopping
breaks to spend their twice a day paychecks before they became worthless (Schiller, 2013). During
this time of inflation, prices more than doubled every day causing people the inability to save, invest,
lend money, or make any long term plans.
According to B. R. Schiller, inflation is the general increase in the average level of prices of goods and

hyperinflation. Because inflation is an increase in the average price of goods and services, it ... Show

Conversely, if there is a record crop or oranges, we would expect to see the price of oranges fall, as
orange sellers will need to reduce their prices in order to clear their inventory. These are scenarios of
inflation and deflation, respectively, though in the real world inflation and deflation are changes in the
average price of all goods and services, not just one (Moffatt, n.d.).
There are a several ways to measure inflation The GDP deflator, the Product Price Index, or the
Consumer Price Index. The GDP deflator is a price index that refers to all goods and services included
in GDP. The Product Price Index program measures the average change over time in the selling prices
received by domestic producers for their output. The prices included in the Product Price Index are
from the first commercial transaction for many products and some services. Finally, the most common
measure of inflation is the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure
of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of
consumer goods and services (Consumer Price Index Frequently Asked Questions, 2014) Note that
items in this basket can be purchased from either domestic or foreign companies, which is one way in
which the Consumer Price Index differs from the GDP deflator

Effects Of Parental Addiction On Children
THE EFFECTS PARENTAL ADDICTIONS HAVE ON CHILDREN
Alexis Holcomb
The cost of alcohol and substance abuse in the United States reaches heights of four hundred eighty
four billion dollars per year ( Magnitude ). That s about seven hundred eighty times the amount it cost
to diagnose and treat sexually transmitted diseases in the year 2000 (Chesson). The sole purpose of
this is not to persuade you one way or the other on this topic. Nor is the purpose to apologize for this
social issue. The purpose of this writing is to employ data showing the societal effects parental
addictions have on children, to show how this data has remained relevant in society, and to show how
it is affecting our future members of society.
In this paper, I look at forms of substance abuse and the effects on children. I will be using the
following headings to break down the different issues associated with this social problem: social
causes, phenomenon, and consequences. I hope to educate those that may be ignorant to the situation,
and help to spark a flame that can be used to not be a bystander, but a solution to the problem at hand.
Social Causes
An estimated twenty five percent of youth under eighteen are exposed to familial alcohol abuse
(Bellum). The Illinois Department of Human Services says that nearly six hundred seventy five
thousand children per year suffer serious abuse or neglect as a direct result of substance abuse (

The Importance Of Inventory Management Systems Of Asda Essay
To critically evaluate the importance of inventory management systems of Asda, UK
Abstract
The topic has been chosen for research is to critically evaluate the inventory management systems of
retail industry in UK. This industry is continuously growing up with pleasure of customers even the
fluctuation in customer choices. Moreover, this sector has been hugely impacted from 2008 to 2010 by
the economic crisis, when customer did not have enough money to spend. As a result some retail
businesses have incurred a loss and shut down their operation. Though some of the retailer took the
challenge and continued their business to see the future success. But inaccuracy of stock count leads to
poor availability in store level stock. Moreover employees inadequate level of skills and improper
management clue to poor control of inventory management. As a result decrease the customer
satisfactions therefore fall in revenues and ultimately collapse in profitability level. (Lussier, 2012)
In addition increases the costs due to out of date and damage lots of inventory, which are also leading
to high shrinkage level for the retailer. It is possible to overcome these barriers and enhance the
company s reputation, increase customer satisfactions including high level of profitability by
practising good inventory management system in place (Warren, Reeve, Duchac, 2013).

Normally, female circumcision (also known as female genital mutilation) is not the topic of discussion
most people would talk about, but for once it should be. Female circumcision is the cutting or removal

starting from when a baby girl is first brought into this world all the way until puberty. The genital
mutilation can be performed by an elderly woman in the village or if the family is wealthy, the surgery
can be done by a professional doctor. After the painful surgery, a ritual is held to honor the young girl

For example, in order for a young woman to inherit land and get married, she had to be circumcised

right to go have his daughter circumcised so when she does become a wife, she can satisfy the man.
This is usually resulted due to the mother s social status as where she cannot speak out against it. It is
very seldom, as well, that a girl will volunteer to have this done to her due to peer pressure. If one was
not circumcised, then she could not be wed and would be looked down upon by the people in her

Dopamine Plays A Role In The Development Of Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a life long disorder that affects about one percent of the population (Mueser McGurk,
2004). The cause of this mental illness is still unclear. Studies have suggested that Schizophrenia does
not arise from one factor but from a combination of genetic, environmental, and social factors (Liddle,
1987). People diagnosed with Schizophrenia struggle to deal with a multitude of symptoms that make
it difficult to function (Mueser McGurk, 2004). Antipsychotic medications are a popular treatment of
the symptoms of Schizophrenia (Mueser McGurk, 2004). Research is constantly being done to
develop these medications to enhance the quality of life of those diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Over
the years, experiments have produced evidence to suggest that dopamine plays a role in the
development of Schizophrenia (Howes, McCutcheon, Stone, 2015). Dopamine is a neurotransmitter
that is produced in the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental regions of the brain. The belief that
dopamine was involved in Schizophrenia arose after multiple studies performed with compounds
produced an increase in extracellular concentrations of dopamine (Lieberman, Kane, Alvir, 1987). The
patients that were administered these compounds had similar symptoms to those observed from
patients who were diagnosed with Schizophrenia (Lieberman et al., 1987). The results of these earlier
studies were expounded on by research that suggested increased striatal dopamine

The Gangster Film Genre Of The Mafia
The gangster film genre is a subgenre of the crime film, dealing with organized crime and more often
than not, the Mafia. Though gangster films have their root in the silent era, the genre became widely
popular in the 1930 s Hollywood Studio era, which is characterized by the Hollywood Genre System.
Genre films offered economic advantages, including the repeated use of standardized themes,
elements, characters and iconography. Additionally, genre films were easily marketable, as audiences
knew what to expect from each genre. If a viewer enjoyed one film from a particular genre, they were
likely to enjoy any other film falling into that genre. Specific themes and elements can be readily

Gay Parent Adoption And Same Sex Adoption
Gay parent adoption or same sex adoption refers to the adoption of children by individuals who prefer
romantic partners of the same sex gays and lesbians. Same sex adoption is portrayed by the media as
being a potentially good thing but with potentially detrimental side effects, most notably for the
adopted children. This type of adoption is often made to look as if it might well be done but perhaps
should not be for the sake of the children involved. With groups such as the religious right,
fundamentalist Christian denominations, and private religiously affiliated adoption agencies backing
the opposition to adoption by gays and lesbians and, on the other side, the American Civil Liberties
Union, the Human Rights Campaign, and various LGBT (lesbian gay bisexual transgender) friendly
groups making up the proponents, the battle over same sex adoption is well defined and entrenched in
a deep and long standing debate. That battle begins with the media and its portrayal of gay parent
adoptions as against the agencies and advocacy groups and their perspectives on placing children in
the homes and care of homosexual individuals.
Adoption remained for a long time a rather homogeneous action, with the placement of children in the
homes of middle class, married couples. Over the course of the last three decades, adoption went
through a metamorphosis, from being merely a source for married, middle class couples to create
families to being a pathway for a number of diverse and

Analysis Of The Movie Wall E
Animation is an often under estimated medium, being seen as primarily for kids and cute story s that
somewhat lack in substance. But in recent years, companies like Pixar have done a great job of
making family movies which contain a strong message. Wall E is one of those movies. The movie
takes place in the future, after a point where humanity has pushed the earth to a point beyond
vegetation and is currently living aboard a space ship, in which everything they need is done for them,
even walking. Despite its bleak premise, the title character, Wall E is a cute, lovable, family friendly
robot, who is in many ways more human than what s left of humanity.
We are introduced to a world, literally covered in garbage, that Wall E has been sorting through for an
unspecified amount of time, diligently doing his job to compact and sort all the debris, left by his
human creators. As the film proceeds, we see what a lonely existence Wall E leads until Eve shows up
with her unknown directive, eventually becoming a friend to Wall E. As the film proceeds eventually
we find that Eve s motivation is to check whether the Earth is capable of vegetation yet, for the
humans now aboard the Axiom space station.
After following Eve back to Axiom, we find that through generations of over reliance on the machines
aboard Axiom, humans have become anti social, over weight, lazy versions of their former selves. At
this point, the message of the movie starts to kick in and we begin to see where

  • 2. Chromebook Advantages And Disadvantages We ve all heard about electronics in schools, whether you are a parent who has been called repeatedly about your kid being glued to it in class or one of said students, it has been present. The Chromebook has been regarded as a way to revolutionize learning, but it also has a slew of consequences. So we are left with the everlasting question of whether or not it is a viable method of learning. It can be seen that there are obvious disadvantages in the system, but some other effects, whether it has to do with health, the environment, or costs, go unnoticed by the general populous. In a study done by the American Optometric Association, it is shown that using computers in school increases the odds of a problem called Computer Vision Syndrome, which causes problems such as headaches, eyestrain, dry eyes, and blurred vision. Another medical problem has been given the lovely name Text Neck . It is a condition that is caused by exerting more pressure on the upper vertebrae of the spine, which causes wear and tear on the spine and could result in mass amounts of pain or required surgery. • 4. The Trading Dynamics of Institutional Investors The fraction of corporate equity owned by institutional investors has grown considerably in the past several decades; institutional holding of shares in U.S. equities has increased from approximately 16% in 1965 to over 50% in 2010 (Federal Reserve Board, 2011). The fact that institutional investors are managing such a sizable wealth invested in U.S. equity market has potential important role in term of setting market prices. The growing impact of institutional investors on capital markets has induced to increased research on the behavior of this group of investors both by academics and policy makers, who tend to believe that institutional investor follow momentum based strategies, and often are alleged to herdinglike behavior and following destabilizing trading strategies. Recent studies investigating the behavior of institutional investors document three main results. First, institutional investors are momentum traders (buying past winners and selling past losers) and are more likely to follow past prices (citet*{grinblatt1995momentum}). Second, Institutional investors sometimes trade in the same direction over a period of time or engage in herding behavior (citet{wermers1999mutual}). Finally, the contemporaneous association between changes in quarterly institutional holding and quarterly stock returns is much stronger than the feedback trading effect (citet{nofsinger1999herding,wermers1999mutual}). The previous studies on the behavior of institutional investors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Finally, we investigated the effect of solute concentration on the tonicity of cells in plant tissue and Elodea. The purpose of our experiments was to find out whether the effect of concentration gradient on the rate of osmosis had a greater effect than temperature on the rate of osmosis. The purpose of the Elodea experiment was to see if a five percent solution of sodium chloride or distilled water effected the structure of the Elodea. To observe the primary features of a eukaryotic cell we used a compound microscope. We tested the effect concentration gradients had on the rate of osmosis two ways: with potato tissue and with dialysis tubes. We used potato slices, paper towels, bowls, sodium chloride (at different concentration levels), and a scale to test potato tissue. We used dialysis tubing, sucrose solution (10% and 40% concentration gradients), plastic clips, bags, distilled water, and a scale to test the rate of osmosis with dialysis tubes. To test the solute concentration on the tonicity of cells in plant tissue and Elodea, we used Elodea, water, sodium chloride solution, tap water, a coverslip, and Kimwipe ... • 6. Conversion Therapy And Its Effects On The Lgbtq Community About 30 years ago, homosexuality was declassified as a mental disorder. It would be assumed that treatments for to change homosexuality would end. However, conversion therapy is still being used today, even our future Vice President, Mike Pence, believes in such treatment. That alone is a huge threat to people of the LGBTQ+ community. Conversion therapy is affecting the LGBTQ+ community greatly. Conversion therapy can be defined as psychological interventions, from behavioral methods to psychoanalytic approaches to change a person s sexuality or gender identity (Hadelman, pg. 202, 2002). This treatment has been proven to not work as well as having harmful implications to LGBTQ+ people. In 1960, the conversion therapy movement began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By 1976, Exodus, a national coalition of ex gay ministries was founded. There were hundreds of participates over the years and most went back to homosexual life. Interestingly enough, ex gay ministries do not keep statistics on the success of their work. However, outside observers founded that at least two thirds of those in such groups give up within two years, and that over seventy five percent of ex gay organizations fail within five years (Baxter, pg. 2, 2015). There are also no peer reviewed articles that display any kind of success with conversion therapy. Even the cases that ex gay ministries consider a person cure is when that person is asexual and refrains from any sexual encounters. This in turn is only a change in behavior, not sexual orientation. • 8. Nature And Nature Of Frederick Douglass Nature has always been with Frederick Douglass even on his journey throughout his life. Nature lived amongst the other slaves as well. When being a slave at a plantation or being owned period, you become familiar with nature; if it is picking cotton, tobacco, corn, and wheat (Douglass 22) or if it is learning how to steer ox s or learning how to drive a boat. Nature is with everything we do; nature is everything anyway because we are nature. We are just part of the huge spectrum of nature. Frederick Douglass was put to the test since the day he was born; becoming a slave by birth. His life was the caste system, no mobility whatsoever. His life is a low as the ground between his toes when the plantation owners only gave them a certain amount of clothing and accessories. Nature was everything and the only thing he had, as if they were best friends. This paper will give you the insight on how nature was to Frederick Douglass and the other slaves. In the end, I can argue that nature has always been with Frederick Douglass and other slaves and will always be with them. Frederick Douglass became first involved with nature when his mother took the opportunity to sneak out into the night to have her only chance at seeing her son. When the sky was pitch black and no one could see or care any less. She took her only opportunity to walk a great distance to spend the night with her boy in her arms. She even took punishment when arriving late at sunrise for her boy. Nature allowed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Ways the British Government Attempted to Hide the Effects of the Blitz from the People For the British civilians bearing the home front of the Blitz was both a frightening and surreal experience. In Britain, most people expect to be told the truth, and newspapers and radios are allowed to speak the facts. However once the country was at war it all changed, and the British people had to accept that the Government who took control of the media was for the good of the country. So the Government needed to have the full support of the media in order to Brain wash the people of Britain, and if the media did not co operate then newspapers and magazines were closed down. At the start of WW2 the Government set up the Ministry of Information to control what was being said to the British public. • 12. Religious Language And Non Cognitive Language Religious language is essentially the communication about religious ideas, faith and belief. Significantly religious language refers to the terms and phrases we use when discussing God and his nature; it is an attempt to talk about God using our non cognitive language. Religious language falls into two categories; cognitive and non cognitive. Cognitive language expresses facts and knowledge that can be proved to be either true or false. Whereas, non cognitive language expresses things which are neither true nor false. There is a debate whether religious language is truly meaningful because the concept of God is something other and timeless , yet we only talk of things using our knowledge that is acquired through our sense experience. Therefore, if something is other and timeless , technically is it not part of our experience and thus how can we talk about it? Firstly, it can be argued that religious language has been proven to be meaningful. The Via Negativa , or The Negative Way is a way of talking about God which focuses on saying what he is not rather than what he is. It is based on the idea that because God is transcendent, we cannot therefore speak of him. However, we can clearly say what he is not. It s a bit like the game Guess Who , as once we know what God is not, we can work out what he is. The Via Negativa was put forward by Pseudo Dionysius in a book called Mystical Theology . This is a good way to approach the subject of God, since our language is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Trichotillomania can involve any area in the body; however, the most common areas are the scalp, followed by the eyebrows and eyelashes in children and in adults2. The seriousness of the pulling behavior is perceived over time, and the disease exhibits a chronic course and it is resistant to therapy3. It has been reported that patients with trichotillomania often did not feel pain while pulling out hair, followed a particular pattern of hair pulling, and often chose strands with unusual appearance, and exhibit repetitive behavior such as engaging oral stimulation after hair pulling4 5. Buddhism is the most famous non theistic religion for many reasons, one being tolerant of other people s beliefs. Unlike many religious organizations, Buddhists do not believe that people who have faith in deities are not going to be saved . In fact, there is no mention of salvation in Buddhist teachings, simply because there is not much talk of the world ending. Although Buddhists believe in the dualities of good and evil , it is often described as the struggle of one s self when faced with the dilemma of giving in to temptation or not. Here are some other things that differentiate Buddhism from other religions: 1. The subject of the book penetrates to the heart of a Child s in depth world, forming a subtle, yet considerable linkage of impressions, feelings, and relationships. The nous style of the writer Roy, whose literature imitates her infantile on the Canadian steppe, has often been compared with others. The book entails the four significant stories which are related to the young girl named Christine, from the period for her innocence to maturity. According to the understanding of this book, the purpose of this piece of literature is to make others understand the importance and power of the development of the relationship between a mother and a daughter. Moreover, in her writing, Gabrielle Roy allowed nothing peripheral or false to stand, according to many. The four allied stories divulge reflective moments during her early years in the massiveness of Manitoba. • 17. Family Origin Theory In Anne Of Green Gables Within the movie Anne of Green Gables there is a compelling demonstration of the Family Origin theory. As Anne Shirley grows up and becomes married she is influenced by the parents who adopted her. As she is adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert (who are siblings) when she is eleven years old, she acquires attributes from each of them that are carried on throughout her life. Although she was adopted as a young teenager she never truly had a family to begin with so her adoption into this family became her Family of Origin. The boldness and directness Anne developed came from her mother Marilla whereas her kind, giving, and hardworking attributes came from her father Matthew. Her father Matthew created a memory in her life as he died when she was only sixteen. This event impacted her life immensely as she tried to live like he would. These qualities and memories carried over into her career as a teacher as well as into her marriage with Gilbert Blythe. The Family of Origin Theory impacts many individuals as they carry on the attributes found in the family they originated from. According to the Figure 11.1 in the Marriages and Families textbook, Anne s family would most likely be classified as a structurally connected family. This theory encompasses everything from talents, attitudes, values, and their future relationships. Anne Shirley is a good example of how her family influenced her behavior and choices as she grew older. As a teacher Anne Shirley encountered many events where she exhibited kindness and courtesy just as her father did. She gave respect even to the youngest of the students when they were bullied and picked on during school as well as showing respect in disciplining the bully. She found value in each of them just as Matthew Cuthbert had in those around him. Anne was also a bold and direct teacher because of the discipline that came from her mother Marilla. She often stood up for her students when they felt misunderstood or unwanted. Anne s Family of Origin allowed her to become a better teacher because of her experiences in her family growing up. As a young child growing up with Matthew and Marilla, Anne began life with a temper and couldn t stop accusing others of hurting her and making ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That being said, I had the logical realization that family was important. Of special importance were grandparents and the extended family members. Being born in a town where both sets of grandparents resided in addition to all the rest of my extended family was very comforting to me. Being the first born grandchild had its advantages. I became very attached to all the grandparents and enjoyed love, attention and quality time frequently until the first grade when we moved. When my younger sister was born, I never felt replaced or left out because of the quality time my grandparents invested in me. Even after my family moved a state away we always went back for holidays, birthdays and summer vacations. I have a great deal of wonderful memories from my childhood. My mother s father, my grandfather, was a very large presence in the community. He was well respected in both the white as well as the black community in which he owned a grocery store. This was unusual because there was a lot of racial tension and discrimination in Southern Alabama in the 1960 s. He was a tall man at six foot five and was a hard worker. He often bailed people out of jail and helped them with food when they were financially strapped anonymously. He was a Sunday school teacher and had good moral values. I learned later that before I came along he had been an alcoholic, a smoker, had been known for his quick temper, was not religious and had been unfaithful to my grandmother. As it was told to me, one Sunday morning he got up, got dressed, went to church and never took another drink or smoked again and was a radically changed man. He became a kind, caring, charitable person. He was more of a father to me in many ways than my dad and we had long talks in which he stressed the important things in life. He and my grandmother took my sister and I fishing on the lake. We camped in the camper. We stayed for vacations at the Gulf of Mexico. • 23. Analysis Of Borderlands By Gloria Anzaldua Speaking of Texas U.S. Southwest/Mexican border, the first thing appears in many people s mind is a horizontal line with US on the upper side and Mexico on the lower, as depicted in maps. However, in reality, a border serves more than just to separate states. In many occasions, it witnesses and bridges social networks that stretch across border. These two functions seem to contradict each other but in fact they exactly reflect the complex nature of borders, or, more realistically, borderlands, a term coined to uproot in people the misleading image of a line. In her book Borderlands, the author Gloria Anzaldua, as a descendent of Indians and Mexicans living close to the America Mexico border in Southern Texas, defies such dualistic and simplistic thinking about the border/double sided or multi sided dilemma, suggesting a new mestiza consciousness , a tolerance of ambiguity and a way of creating new personal culture from her accounting with all three cultures, as opposed to adopting only one of them without independent thinking and confronting against the rest. This new way of thinking stems from the reality of borderlands but instead of stopping there the author expands its application to establishing both cultural and sexual identities. For Anzaldua, any borderland is a place of contradictions (preface 19), rendering border residents to suffer from constant insecurity and perplexity as they struggle to keep their multiple identities intact. Some people argue that self reliance is harmful. From this perspective, self reliance generates bad thoughts and ideas, and people should conform to society instead. However, others argue that self reliance is extremely important for society. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a main proponent of this view, says that To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men that is genius (1). According to this view, relying on one s own ideas is genius, and it is much smarter to practice self reliance rather than conform to society s ideas. In sum, then, the issue is whether self reliance is beneficial or not beneficial. My view is that self reliance is beneficial. Though I concede that at times it may be a good idea to agree with the majority, I still maintain that one s own ideas are much better than those of the majority almost all of the time. Although some people think that the majority opinion is usually correct, I claim that the notion of self reliance is beneficial because individuals should rely on their own knowledge gained from life experience to create new and better ideas, which cause society to move forward and become better than it was before. Self reliance is beneficial because individuals create ideas that are better compared to those of the majority. Emerson explains the importance of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each of the previous years cost approximately $15,000. The small amount of funding still available for the program was just not adequate to provide for bringing in the author. The narrator recalls stories of her mother taking leaps and risks. For example, one day when her mother was working as part of a trapeze act in a circus show, a freak lightning bolt struck the tent pole during a performance. • 29. The Mozart Effect and Infant Intelligence In modern society intelligence is highly competitive and subject to scrutiny; therefore, it is understandable that a child s intelligence is a primary concern for many parents. The Mozart effect, popularised in the 1990s, resulted in many parents believing that simply exposing their child to music composed by Mozart would improve their intelligence (Campbell, 1997). The claim was founded by research published in the journal Nature, which suggested that spatial reasoning could be temporarily enhanced by listening to one of Mozart s compositions for ten minutes (Rauscher, Shaw Ky, 1993). It will be argued that there is not sufficient evidence to support the claim that playing Mozart to babies will increase their intelligence. Firstly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A study intending to emulate the results expressed in the original study was performed on preschool aged children exposing them to similar variables as those in the original study (Hui, 2007). The study showed no empirical evidence that listening to Mozart is more beneficial for children than ulterior conditions (Hui, 2007). This disproves the belief that listening to Mozart makes a child smarter also making the generalization from the Rauscher et al (1993) inconclusive. There are also a number of other factors that have been overlooked when comparing the finding of the original study to the Mozart effect in children. Another discerning factor expressed in the original study was the test used to assess intelligence between the participants. The portion of the Stanford Binet test used in the original study focuses on one aspect of intelligence, namely, spatial reasoning (Rauscher et al, 1993). Therefore, it would be invalid to assume that high scores on this specific test delineate an increase in overall general intelligence. The test itself is also bias as specific cultures outperform others, as cultural environment has an influence on intelligence, which may lead to deficits in the results found (Weinberg, 1989). Sternberg (2004) found that IQ tests are effective at predicting academic success in western individuals but are not conclusive measures of overall intelligence or ability to succeed. It shows us how friendship is not always easy and how jealousy, competition and irrational thinking can disrupt a seemingly strong and secure friendship. On the surface of Gene and Finny s friendship, it seemed that they were the best of friends and that they did not have any problems. But, all of this changed with time as most things do. Gene explains, we were best friends at that moment (page 18). This foreshadows how their seemingly extraordinary friendship is going to change. A common feeling Gene has towards Finny is jealousy. This quote represents the change in Gene s behavior. Before he was always out with his group of friends, and now he isolates and tries to forget himself. In friendship, communication of these thoughts are necessary. But, at Devon this form of communication is frowned upon. For example, Gene says, exposing a sincere emotion nakedly like that at the Devon School was the next thing to suicide (page 48). Gene is explaining how expressing emotions is not something that happens at Devon. Suppression of this much emotion leads to built up feelings later causing Gene to express these feelings in unpredictable ways later causing Phineas to fall off the tree. • 37. Dopamine Plays A Role In The Development Of Schizophrenia Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a life long disorder that affects about one percent of the population (Mueser McGurk, 2004). The cause of this mental illness is still unclear. Studies have suggested that Schizophrenia does not arise from one factor but from a combination of genetic, environmental, and social factors (Liddle, 1987). People diagnosed with Schizophrenia struggle to deal with a multitude of symptoms that make it difficult to function (Mueser McGurk, 2004). Antipsychotic medications are a popular treatment of the symptoms of Schizophrenia (Mueser McGurk, 2004). Research is constantly being done to develop these medications to enhance the quality of life of those diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Over the years, experiments have produced evidence to suggest that dopamine plays a role in the development of Schizophrenia (Howes, McCutcheon, Stone, 2015). Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is produced in the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental regions of the brain. The belief that dopamine was involved in Schizophrenia arose after multiple studies performed with compounds produced an increase in extracellular concentrations of dopamine (Lieberman, Kane, Alvir, 1987). The patients that were administered these compounds had similar symptoms to those observed from patients who were diagnosed with Schizophrenia (Lieberman et al., 1987). Gay Parent Adoption And Same Sex Adoption Gay parent adoption or same sex adoption refers to the adoption of children by individuals who prefer romantic partners of the same sex gays and lesbians. Same sex adoption is portrayed by the media as being a potentially good thing but with potentially detrimental side effects, most notably for the adopted children. This type of adoption is often made to look as if it might well be done but perhaps should not be for the sake of the children involved. With groups such as the religious right, fundamentalist Christian denominations, and private religiously affiliated adoption agencies backing the opposition to adoption by gays and lesbians and, on the other side, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Human Rights Campaign, and various LGBT (lesbian gay bisexual transgender) friendly groups making up the proponents, the battle over same sex adoption is well defined and entrenched in a deep and long standing debate. That battle begins with the media and its portrayal of gay parent adoptions as against the agencies and advocacy groups and their perspectives on placing children in the homes and care of homosexual individuals. Adoption remained for a long time a rather homogeneous action, with the placement of children in the homes of middle class, married couples. But in recent years, companies like Pixar have done a great job of making family movies which contain a strong message. Wall E is one of those movies.
