Essay On Alcohol In The Military
Alcoholism and Drugs in the military The word alcoholism is defined as an addiction to the
consumption of alcoholic liquor or the mental illness and compulsive behavior resulting from alcohol
dependency. People in the military use and abuse drugs and alcohol for the same reasons that other
people do: Drugs and alcohol can make you feel good. But the military lifestyle also may include
other issues that can affect alcohol and drug abuse, such as: The stress of being in armed conflict or
knowing that you may be involved in armed conflict. The stress of being separated from your spouse
and family.
Long periods of boredom on a base or in a war setting. A history of accepted alcohol use. People in the
military use the same drugs as people who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alcohol use is also higher among men and women in military service than among civilians. Almost
half of active duty service members (47 percent) reported binge drinking in 2008 up from 35 percent
in 1998. In 2008, 20 percent of military personnel reported binge drinking every week in the past
month; the rate was considerably higher 27 percent among those with high combat exposure.
Regarding medical expenditures, studies have found that excessive alcohol use by military members
results in an annual cost of $425 million. Excessive drinking within the military is estimated to result
in a loss of 320,000 work days and 34,400 arrests per year, half of which are for driving under the
influence (Ames, G., and Cunradi, C. Alcohol use and preventing alcohol related problems among
young adults in the military. Alcohol Research Health 28:252 257, 2004). Service members may carry
the psychological and physical wounds of their military experience with them into subsequent civilian
life. In one study, one in four veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan reported symptoms of a
mental or cognitive disorder; one in six reported symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
These disorders are strongly associated with substance abuse

Family Themes In David Copperfield
We are going to focus on the book David Copperfield out of all that concern the theme of family and
parenting issues, although Dickens s work is known for the transition from childhood to adulthood
theme, we can draw some scenes with the family theme and another theme that wasn t really a matter
in the time when Dickens wrote, the adoption which was added later in the Victorian time. Charles
Dickens also targeted the father figure in his works, how he was viewed and how children dealt with
the absent of a father figure.
Parents are important for the right upbringing of a child, their support and their care shape the child in
what it would be in the future; the way parents behave and talk, their temperament also has an
influence in the upbringing due to the fact that children copy what their parents do most of the times
and a bad influence in going to take them on the wrong path when they grown up.
As the book opens, we find out the David s father has passed away before the ... Show more content

Victorians too, adoption and single parenting was kind of taboo topic but Dickens wanted to show a

Essay about The Role of Women in the American Civil War
When the American Civil War began on April 12th, 1861, over 3 million Union and Confederate
soldiers prepared for battle. Men from all over America were called upon to support their side in the
confrontation. While their battles are well documented and historically analyzed for over a hundred
years, there is one aspect, one dark spot missing in the picture: the role of women in the American
Civil War. From staying at home to take care of the children to disguising themselves as men to fight
on the battlefield, women contributed in many ways to the war effort on both sides. Though very few
women are recognized for their vital contributions, even fewer are The women during the war felt an
obligation to assist in one form or another. Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Hawks (Union Nurse) Esther Hill Hawks, M.D. is one of the many women that decided to stay away

that worked in a hospital that took in and cared for black soldiers. On one day Hawks was to expect

History Of Hip Hop
To most people when they hear the term Hip hop they think of ghetto music that only thugs like. I m
hear to show you that is not the case. Ever since the 1970 s it has been molded in a unique way each
decade by various artist. Hip Hop is new compared to most genres of music and that s also one of the
reasons I think it is still resented by the older generation. In this essay I will be dividing Hip hop or
Rap into three categories, past, present, and the future. Hip hop has a rich history, but what it still has
to offer is the reason it will be around for decades to come.
In 1973 a young girl had a birthday party or block party on 1520 Sedgwick Ave., New York, her older

headed in a more bass heavy direction with the quality of lyrics going down. I say this because there
are a lot of young rappers where you cant understand sometimes what they are saying but the bass is
so loud in the back it just makes you want to dance to it. There s nothing wrong with that in my
opinion but like everything else that s new it will be resented but eventually praised for its new style.
The future of Hip hop is bright thanks to every artist who has put their blood, sweat and tears into this
genre and the new young blood will carry it on for decades to

The Civil Rights Movement And Our Nation s Continued...
In March the United States celebrates the Selma to Montgomery march of 1965 to honor the civil
rights movement and our nation s continued progress towards racial equality. Yet almost five decades
later a broken criminal justice system has proven that we still have a long way to go in achieving
racial equality. Today people of color continue to be excessively incarcerated, policed, and sentenced
to death at significantly higher rates than whites. Further, racial differences in the criminal justice
system hurt communities of color by excluding thousands by limiting blacks the right to vote, limiting
employment opportunities ,housing, public benefits, and education to millions more . While these
disparities still exist it is crucial that a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The False Portrayal Analysis
The False Portrayal I would like to address the current societal image of the African American women
that is being portrayed in modern American society. Also, to address certain stereotypes of African
American Women that are created by motion pictures, music entertainment, and other media outlets. I
will also share my perspective as an African American Women and my experiences meeting other
women of African American background to prove that that these stereotypes do not always hold
weight. As an African American woman I am very proud of my culture and the strides we have made
as a community over the years in terms of individual and community success. However
I ve become complacent about how most of the success that the African American Community
achieves usually and primarily measured through the sports, entertainment, and music industry. I will
say that I am grateful for my community to have these platforms that allow the African American
Community to have a voice and to part take in many important discussion surrounding the world.
However, I am highly frustrated at times with the portrayal of the women through the use of these
platforms. I am also frustrated at times with are community for not recognizing and celebrating the
women who have achieved college degrees. Since our own community doesn t always take the time to
acknowledge these sort of achievements it then spills over to other ethnic or racial groups becoming

Arthur Miller Essay
Arthur Miller Arthur Miller, in his plays, deals with the injustice of society s moral values and the
characters who are vulnerable to its cruelty. A good majority of these plays were very successful and
earned numerous awards. According to Brooks Atkinson, a critic for the New York Times, Miller s
play Death of a Salesman was successful because the play is so simple in style and so inevitable in
theme that it scarcely seems like a thing that has been written and acted. For Mr. Miller has looked
with compassion into the hearts of some ordinary Americans and quietly transferred their hopes and
anguish to the theater (Babusci 1261). This play, in 1949, received the Pulitzer Prize, the New York

The Redwood Tree-Personal Narrative
I have hunted monsters in the depths of Lake Erie. I have searched for fairies in the Redwood Forest. I
have solved mysteries at the bottom of the ocean. No matter how different they may seem, all these
adventures have one common thread. My brother. When he was born the doctor said he would never
walk, talk, or read. Receiving this news broke my parents hearts. Even with this disastrous news they
set out to prove him wrong. They decided that they would provide him with every opportunity to
strive. By the time I was born, four years later, he could walk and talk like any other child and he still
continues to learn new skills to this day. When I was first born, my brother called me baby girl
because he was not able to pronounce my name. Wherever I was, that was where he was. I was his
favorite person. He would spend hours just staring at me in my crib waiting for me to do something.
After I learned to talk my brother and I had our own secret language. Even though it was actually
poorly spoken English. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My parents would complain that we
never made any sense, but we would laugh and play all day without a care in the world. As we grew

Personal Philosophy Of Missions
Missions is a complex, multilayered calling that then has several layers of philosophy within it. It is
not like an onion that you peel layers back one at a time to find deeper layers within it, but it is more
like an orange, with separate slices that come together to create a complete, holistic piece of fruit. If a
slice gets removed, it still might look and taste like an orange, but it is not quite complete. In the same
way, missions has many slices to it and removing one does not make the others less missional, but
perhaps less complete under the umbrella, or peel, of missions. There are three primary slices that I

Florida Aquifer System
Next we will discuss the Florida Aquifer System. There are many factors that contribute to the storage
and movement of ground water, porosity and permeability are the two most important elements to this
equation (Lutgens, 2012.) Porosity is the volume of open space between rock or sediment and
permeability is the ability for a fluid to pass through (Lutgens, 2012.) Rock and sediments that allow
groundwater to travel freely are called aquifers. These aquifers are natural resources that exist
underneath the earths surface to store water. In the case of Florida s aquifer system the system is

American Sign Language And Numerical Stories
A Z stories in American Sign Language and numerical stories as well were introduced around the
1940 s (Bauman). Gilbert Eastman stated that A Z and numerical stories were most likely created as
early as the 1900 s at the Ohio School for the Deaf (Bauman). However, with the advanced technology
of the 20th century American Sign Language numerical and A Z stories may be cherished and
videorecorded for future generations (American Sign Language Literature). What are A Z and

Although, there rules that apply to both forms of storytelling. The first rule is that the story
incorporates paralinguistic mechanisms such as pausing, space, etc. (Bauman). The second rule is that
the story flows naturally, and clearly makes sense. It is not allowed that a storyteller has a story that is
choppy or jumpy to the point that the viewer does not understand. One of the most important rules is
that the storyteller succeeds in continuing the story in alphabetical, or numerical, order. Similarly, if
one tells the story in the reverse order, one cannot skip a letter, or number (Bauman). Lastly, for
alphabetical stories there are allowable deviations and those that are not allowed. For example, many
storytellers interchange 2 hand shapes such as N, H, U, and V. This deviation, along with the
interchange of the 3 hand shapes M and W, are allowable deviations (Bauman). However, the usage of
the time out sign as T in A Z stories is an example of a deviation that is not allowed (Bauman). These
vital rules to alphabetical and numerical storytelling aid in contributing to the overall purpose. A Z and
numerical stories have multiple purposes, however, the main purpose is that of a source of
entertainment (American Sign Language Literature). Similar to our American Sign Language class,
classes throughout the world are assigned to create or research A Z and numerical stories for school

Sherman Alexie s What You Pawn I Will Redeem
The ability to understand other s differences is what we call acceptance. Accepting a person or a
situation for exactly what it is rather than trying to manipulate it into what you think it needs to be is a
way to happiness. The main idea of Sherman Alexie s story entitled What You Pawn I Will Redeem is
not let anyone or anything control, limit, repress or discourage you from being your true self because
only you can determine who you truly are as a person. Specifically in this story, the main character is
experiencing an identity crisis caused by the colonization of the White Folks. This story claims this
idea through symbolism to show the death of the Indian culture, through connotation to show the
differences between the past and the present Native Indians generation and through characterization to
show how the Indian population are still trying to find their true identity as a part of the Indian nation.
Symbolism is used to show how important it is not to let anyone define who you truly are because in
Jackson s and the Indian nation s case, it had caused the death of their culture. The symbolism of
Jackson s grandmother represents the Native Indians culture. For example, Her name was Agnes, and
she died of breast cancer when I was fourteen. suggest that the grandmother is a representation of the
Indian culture, which died caused by the colonizations, something that takes over someone s property.

From the Nobel Prize website itself, the passage describes briefly and clearly elaborates on Albert
Camus, mostly in the focus of his career, writing and otherwise his involvement in theatre. The main
purpose of this piece is to inform people who are interested in the Nobel Prize selection and in Camus
himself about him, providing a short synopsis on his background and his movement in his career from
political journalism to writing essays, stories, and furthermore novels. Growing up, Camus expressed
a deep interest to philosophy, which later prevailed in all of his publications as well as his Algerian
upbringing. Although his fascinations to the mind and thought were definitely present, he was unable
to attend university for philosophy; however, luck struck him when he was able to begin working as a
columnist and later dabbled in theatre. In many of his works, he utilized the notion of absurdum and
absence, seen heavily in The Myth of Sisyphus and further elaborated upon in the main character of
Meursault in The Stranger. By gathering the pieces that occurred in Camus s life, it becomes clearer as
to why he wrote the story the way it is and what it means, to him and to others.

A Research Study On Outsourcing Activities
1. INTRODUCTION
This chapter introduces brief information about research background and rationale; next, research
problems are specified which are then directed down to research objectives. Finally, ethical
confirmation is presented, coming up with the research structure.
1.1. Background
During last decades, lots of companies in developed countries have moved their production processes
from the origin country to other developing countries in the East, Southeast and South Asia (Tate et al
2014), so called offshoring or outsourcing activities. This practice occurred strongly as a trend in the

The phenomenon of firms transferring their business operations back to its country of origin can be
referred as reshoring, insourcing, onshoring, backshoring, homeshoring, and rightshoring (Espana
2013). Even though some explanation have been mentioned, this strategic changes in manufacturing
location mainly because of increase in wages, fluctuation in currency values, labour productivity and
reduction of energy costs from 2004 to 2014. According to the International Labour Organization,
wages in low cost countries have soared. For instance, real wages in Asia rose by 7.1% to 7.8% a year
between 2000 and 2008 while pays in advanced economies just increased 0.5% to 0.9%, even in
American manufacturing, the real wages have declined by 2.2% since 20005. Pay for senior
management in several emerging markets such as China, Turkey and Brazil, now either matches or
exceeds pay in America and Europe (Hay Group report 2014). In addition, pay and benefits in China
the largest offshoring and outsourcing developing country increased by 10% (2000 2005) and 19%
(2005 2010) (Boston Consulting Group 2011) (figure 1). Moreover, Chinese Government increased
the target minimum wages by 13% until 2015. At this rate, wage differential between the US and
China will disappear by 2020 (Sirkin et al.). Figure 1: Wage rate revolution (source: Boston

(Robert A. Roessel, 1). In this time of lack of control, Navajos were overpowered by Americans who
were in position of authority and control. This is because Americans lacked the understanding of the
Navajo way, leading to be fatal for many as they were being transferred, resigned,

The Banning Of The Lottery In The United States
The history of the lottery began some fifty plus years ago where before then it was banned in every
state in America. After state governments decided it was partly their responsibility to protect citizens
from the dangers of gambling, they found it to be their duty to govern the lottery. New Hampshire
established the first state lottery in 1964, it then soon spread throughout the northeast. All the states
between Maryland and Maine had a lottery, by 1978. Lotteries went west in the 1980s, adding 18
more states from Virginia to California. The southern states held out the longest. In the 1990s, only
three southern states authorized lotteries and five more in the 2000s. Today 44 states promote and
operate lotteries with Wyoming being the last

arrival rate 
service rate
Arrival time = 1/arrival rate
Service time = 1/service rate
Inter arrival time between services
Inter arrival time between services are 1.144, .488, .024, 2.472, 2.304, .84, and .728
The service time for the channels are:
 =1/1.144 = 0.87
 =1/.488 = 2.05
 =1/.024 = 41.67
 =1/ 2.472 = 0.40
 =1/ 2.304 = 0.43
 =1/ .84 = 1.19
 =1/ .728 = 1.37
Arrival time for the channels are:

Characteristics of the Amphioctopus Marginatus Essay
The Amphioctopus Marginatus is of the Kingdom Animalia because like other members of this
kingdom, it is both multicellular and is a heterotroph. This species is also part of the phylum Mollusca
because like other mollusks, it has a coelom, (letter B on the first phylogeny tree), a visceral body
mass, and a mantle (letter C). Furthermore, because it is not part of the phylum Chordata, it does not
have the notochord (letter A) (Doc 2). It is of the class Cephalopoda, because like other members of
this class, such as Asteroceras Confusum, the Marginatus has a merged head and foot (letter F), a
siphon (letter D), and a ring of tentacles (letter E) surrounding the head (Doc 1). As a member of the

members of the family Octopodidae who all have arms that unite at the base of the mantle (letter A).
Both the sub Family of Bathypolypodinae and the Eledoninae have poisonous venom (letter B) (Doc

Valdiviae (Doc 6). The Bathypolypus Arcticus has a relatively large lifespan six years (letter F) unlike
the Valdiviae which live for approximately one to three years (Doc 4). The letter G represents a

Heuristic And Bias Of Decision Making
Heuristic and bias in decision making
If I was given A$50,000 to invest on a portfolio of stocks, what should I choose as a starter without
any experience on shares?
According to van der Pligt (2001) the study of human decision making is an interdisciplinary project
including economics, statistics as well as psychology, and moreover, decision making behavior
involving almost all branches of psychology. After three weeks simulation of trading on Australian
Stock Exchange, in retrospect, I amazingly find there are substantial bias impacts on my decision with
respect to choosing, selling and keeping stocks.
The following table lists the most fundamental heuristic or bias I had during the time I made decisions
for stocks:

War on Japan Essay
through history, man always seems to be at war. In some cases he is the attacker, in others the
defender. In both cases, these wars are broken down into two basic elements, the battles that are
fought and the individuals who fight them. The elements conflict, courage, fear, cowardice, heroism,
victory, and defeat make up the exploits of war we record in our history books. This paper will deal
with war, more specifically, a special exploit within one of the most significant wars ever experienced.
World War II involved millions of fighting men around the world. In Europe, Hitler and Germany

What if Army bombers could take off an aircraft carrier? Low tried his idea on Admiral King. King
thought the idea had potential so he sent it on to Captain Donald Duncan to turn his plan into fact.
This he did, and the Tokyo Raid became fact instead of fiction.
The first step in the plan was finding a leader. General Arnold requested Lieutenant Colonel James
Dolittle as the man to select the plane and the men for the mission. Dolittle accepted the challenge
without hesitation. Arnold let him know in no uncertain terms that he was to be a planner not a pilot.
As Doolittle went to work on the project, he saw a lot of problems. First of all, carrier landings were
impossible for twin engine bombers. Next, the total air trip was eleven hundred miles. The closest
landing area would be in Russia, but Joseph Stalin would not let them land there because he didn t
want to be invaded by Japan since he already had his hands full with the Germans. Fortunately, China
said it was all right to land there but they said it reluctantly. With these considerations and others,
Doolittle determined that the chances of the mission succeeding was fifty fifty. Despite the odds, the
decision was made to begin the project.
As the first step, despite Arnold, Doolittle wrote himself into the plan as a pathfinder. Doolittle s job
during the attack would be to light up Tokyo with incendiary

How Is Tom Sawyer Selfish
In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Tom Sawyer is a hard kid to pin down. Not just
literally, either. While he s jumping over fences and getting lost and tricking everyone into thinking he
s dead, you keep going back and forth from thinking you know what kind of character traits he holds.
He keeps the reader in constant confusion throughout the whole book, at least that s what he did for
me. Just when his selflessness shines through, there s just as much emphasis, if not more, on his
mischievous or selfish ways. He appears in three other novels by Twain: Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn, Tom Sawyer Abroad, and Tom Sawyer, Detective. Sawyer also appears in at least three
unfinished Twain works, Huck and Tom Among the Indians, Schoolhouse Hill, and Tom Sawyer s
Conspiracy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He s always playing hooky. However, he s also saving lives, such as Muff Potter s. He tries to teach

when Becky rips the teacher s anatomy book. Tom took accountability for tearing it when Ms.
Dobbins urged the culprit to come clean. Though this brings more uncertainty, as there are some hints
that Tom was still getting pleasure from taking the blame, such as when the book states that the
adoration in Becky s eyes is so valuable that it is worth one thousand floggings from Ms. Dobbins.
These examples are some of the main reasons for the disarray in Tom s

After the death of Bartleby, the lawyer hears the rumor that the scrivener worked as a copyist of dead

himself and agrees that there is no his fault in Bartleby s death and he tried to do his best to make his
life better. Moreover, he cannot understand that the blank and colorless wall of Bartleby symbolizes
the self imprisoned mind that can see nothing. Committed to a world of safe routine and financial

past century. For decades, critics have disputed how to understand and explain the character of the
scrivener. The attempts to give the accurate explanation of Bartleby behavior and thoughts will be vain

critics interpreted him as a universal symbol of Melville s life or the author himself. Widmer is sure

nineteenth century America which allowed little recognition or place to a serious, critical and
pessimistic artist (p. 446). Bartleby s silent and inexplicable resistance brings isolation to him not only

Krakow Research Paper
Only a few miles from Poland s second largest cities, Krakow, lies a nearly barren field with only a
moderate sized memorial to the thousands of people killed in a brutal act of genocide. Here, between
1941 and 1945, thousands of enemies of the Nazi party, primarily Jews, were worked, starved, died of
disease, or were shot. Out of the over 150,000 people sent through Plaszow and its sub camps, only
around 2,000 survived. From its establishment in 1941 to its liquidation in January 1945, thousands of
people lost their lives or were sent to their deaths in other camps. In the years before the German
occupation, the Jewish population of Krakow was usually around 70,000. After the Nazi conquest, the
Jews were persecuted relentlessly. Between May and December of 1941, 55,000 Krakow Jews were
forced into the countryside, and between 15,000 and 20,000 remaining Jews were housed in the newly
established Krakow Ghetto. In June of the same year, the Krakow Plaszow Forced Labor camp was

Argumentative Essay On Waking Up
Do you love a commercial that tells you something will work in a split of a second or when you eat or
drink a product it will make you skinny or fat? Here is a little story about a commercial of the Intel
360 replay. Their slogan is, it makes everything look epic. Tom Brady (A Super Bowl Champion)
wakes up and yawns, brushes his teeth, makes pancakes and as he tosses the pancake in the pan it falls
down and he and the dog looks at the fallen pancake and Brady grabs it as the dog is also running to
get it, so to Intel the replay is epic.
Waking up in the morning is a normal thing to most of us, some due to some circumstances hate

Others hate the whole process of brushing and if they were asked, they can go for a very long time
without brushing, now that is so disgusting right? Brady did not show how brushing the teeth was
epic. He would have at least done something extraordinary like have shown us the above and that
would have WOWED people.
Who doesn t love some good sweet pancakes, with some syrup at the side, eggs, sausages, some
veggies, juice and if you are caffeine person some tea or coffee will do. Brady showed us that he was
tossing the pancake then it fell down. If you could see how Brady and his dog looked at each other
than in a split of a second, he literally took the pancake from the floor and stuffed it in the mouth. We
say the dog too, was hungry but you can imagine how fast Brady took to collect the pancake and at the
same time the dog was trying to reach the pancake, Brady was now stuffing it. Now that s a very
funny commercial there if you could see how the dog looked at Brady it was in a very disappointing
look.
You know their times your dog seems to be the lucky one, it wakes you in the morning you share your
breakfast together. As the saying goes every dog has its own day, even though it is not its meaning, we
can literary look at it in this perspective but for Brady s dog today it was not his day. The commercial
shows us how epic the pancake is that Brady feels jealous to share it with the dog.
In my perspective, a commercial should be that one wishes

The Ambiguity Of The Iconic
This essay will explore the ambiguity of the Iconic, what does it stand for in the modern world of
architecture and how does it originate. The obsession of architecture with this term is slowly taking
over; architects strive towards creating Iconic buildings as a way to gain fame. How does one design
an Iconic building and what does it imply when placed within a particular context? We will explore
this through a particular architectural project of the church of San Giovanni Battista under Florence,
an icon which never really succeeded in achieving its purpose and yet contains some of the very
fundamental and curcial ideas about the Iconic which I want to express in this essay. Why does one
building (such as the Eiffel tower or London Gherkin)become symbolic for a city while other attempt
to replicate this phenomenon fail? And most importantly what role does the context (as a city

suspend the bells of the church. This decision defies the original meaning of church bells. The element
seizes to act as a highlight point of a tower, that used to be the case in many churches including
Russian orthodox and Italian Catholic architecture, where the bell tower always stoodabove the rest of
the structure and the surrounding. Thus bearing symbolic and practical value. In the church of the
highway however, the bells are beneath the weight of architecture, hidden by the concrete slabs. This
furthermore reinforces Michelucci s idea of creating an icon of speed: architecture that is not meant to
become a centre of a town or unifying element of society, but rather a glimpse of a flash. The bells are
no more needed to spread the sound over long distance, which was the case in a city, and therefore
lose their original significance. Instead the bells transform into a purely technical

of seconds to find the broadcast. I turn up the volume and sit down on the edge of the sofa.
The broadcaster s voice was deep and booming as he announced what today s events were to be. On
the screen was a vast green field surrounded by thousands of people being forcefully held back by the
big black barricades. Some were holding up signs above their heads whilst others were flailing their
hands in order to get attention from the guards standing at the edge of the field. The field itself had

Sadly, a hierarchy has been formed because of these dates, those with a long time to live essentially
ruling the rest of us. If you are going to make it past the age of 55 you are automatically assigned a
council seat and from there you can work your way up to being part of the government. Our dates are
similar to that of societal classes. Lower class is those who are going to die young who live in fear
until they are no longer living. Middle class is made up of people who will live as long as their early
fifties. Then there is upper class. Upper class is for the lucky ones; who don t live in fear, who are

My monitor screen flickered trying to find a good enough signal to stream the broadcast clearly.

recognized as one of the greatest voices of WWI. The Wilfred Owen Association was formed in 1989
to commemorate Wilfred Owen s life and work. The poems for which Owen is remembered for were
written in a period between August 1917 and September 1918. Owen self appointed himself with the
task of speaking out for the men in his care. He did this by showing the pettiness of war, which Owen
also expressed his distaste for the war in his letters home. Owen s somber practically, energy and
umbrage, his humanity are blatant in many of his well known poems. As well as his great technical
skills in his phrasings or line set ups

The Methods Of Data Collection
Introduction Collecting primary data can be as challenging as a researcher allows it to be. Most
methods of data collection can be used across studies that are classified as qualitative, quantitative or
mixed methods. As a matter of fact, the way a specific method is employed for data collection
determines the classification of a study to a large extent (Kumar, 2014, Page 170). The primary data
that is collected should be data that a person not only understands, but data that they can clearly
analyze. Given the option, the non experimental methodology seemed to be most comfortable.
Lamentations 3:40 states, Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord (KJV). The
qualitative method was chosen as the type of data that would be researched. It is important that while
collecting data for a research paper, the researcher knows the type of data in which their research
paper will consist of. Qualitative study designs are not as specific, precise and well defined as designs
in qualitative research. Also, there is degree or overlap between study designs and methods of data
collection. Some of the commonly used designs in qualitative research are: case study design, oral
history, focus group studies, participant observation, commonly discussion forums and the reflective
journal log (Kumar, 2014, Page 161). While the researcher is in the process of collecting their primary
data, they should know the type of data they are searching for, personally observe the data

African American Culture Essay example
African American Culture
Culture is not a fixed phenomenon, nor is it the same in all places or to all people. It is relative to time,
place, and particular people. Learning about other people can help us to understand ourselves and to
be better world citizens. One of the most common ways of studying culture is to focus on the
differences within and among cultures. Although their specifics may vary form one culture to another,
sociologists refer to those elements or characteristics that can be found in every know society as
cultural universals. For example, in all societies, funeral rites include expression of grief, disposing of
the dead, and rituals that define the relations of the dead with the living. And on the most ... Show

Many of our life lessons were often given by our elders in the form of stories, jokes, and the spirituals
which serve often song in the fields, as well as, on Sunday mornings. Yet, as a people, we thought it
necessary to hold on these priceless teachings because it has served as the only link to our African
ancestry. African American culture is both part of and distinct from American culture. African
Americans have contributed literature, agricultural skills, foods, clothing, dance, and language to
American culture. There are distinctive patterns of language use among African Americans that arose
as creative responses to the hardships imposed on the African American community. Slave owners
forced African Americans to create a language that allowed them to communicate effectively with one
another. Slaves were not allowed the opportunity to read and write because most slave owners thought
they would find a way to buy their freedom if they knew how to read and write. Significant numbers
of people still speak some of the Creole languages they used to communicate so many years ago.
Agriculture and food is also a unique aspect of African American culture. The cultivation and use of
many agricultural products, such as yams, peanuts, rice, okra, grits, and cotton, can be traced to
African and African American influences. African American foods reflect creative

The Best American Essays Of The Century By Robert Atwan
Throughout the 1900 s, America has grown exponentially in its values, struggles, and art. The Best
American Essays of the Century, written by Robert Atwan, showcases the progress this country has
made through a series of essays ordered chronologically. Although many underlying topics existed in
these pieces, three common themes particularly stood out. In How It Feels to Be Colored Me by Zora
Neale Hurston, The Old Stone House by Edmund Wilson, and The Handicapped by Randolph Bourne,
identity is an important subject. Injustice is a clearly shared theme in Coatesville by John Jay
Chapman, The Devil Baby at Hull House by Jane Addams, and Of the Coming of John by W.E.B. Du
Bois. Finally, in Corn pone Opinions by Mark Twain, Tradition and the Individual Talent by T.S. Eliot,
and What Are Masterpieces and Why Are There So Few of Them by Gertrude Stein, the aspect of non
personality and the removal of one s self seems to be commonly spoken of in terms of creation.
The first motif, identity, appears initially in How It Feels to Be Colored Me where it says, But I am not
tragically colored. There is no great sorrow damned up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I do
not mind at all. (p. 115) Here, it is obvious that the author holds no shame in her skin nor self. She is
proud of who she is despite the prejudice some hold against her. Hurston identifies as colored and
does not care what others think. Her identity is unwavering. Also applicable to this idea is

Anti Semitic And Anti Zionist Movement
By the late nineteenth century, the Jews, who had been in exile for almost two thousand years, found
their ancestral homeland in Palestine, which was largely occupied by Arabs and governed by the
Turks; this dilemma sparked many problems within the Middle East. Since the rise of the Zionist
movement and the establishment of the State of Israel in May 1948, political leaders of predominately
Muslim nations in the Middle East have made discriminatory prejudice anti Semitic statements or
actions. Allowing for apportioning or deflection of blame, contradicting the stated social and
theological morality of the Islamic faith, this technique has been used as a tool for political control by
regimes in this region for the past century. The relationship between anti Semitic and anti Zionist
views in the Middle East are shown through the nature of the governments involved in the anti Zionist
movement, the relationship these nations had with the state of Israel, the effect it had on the Arabic
people living within these countries and the assumptions made on Judaism and Zionism.
After World War II, Britain found itself in intense conflict with the Jewish community over Jewish
immigration limits, as well as continued conflict with the Arab community over limit levels, as they
had to put an end to the British mandate set in Palestine. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of
Jewish Holocaust survivors and refugees sought a new life far from their destroyed communities in
Europe; thus

High School Athletes Take Drugs
Should high school athletes take drug tests for performance enhancing drugs? The answer is yes.
There are many different reason for high school athletes to have to take the tests. Most high school
athletes that take these drugs, take them to get better in sports and continue to because they think won
t get caught doing this. Most of these athletes might take their love for sports to college, and maybe
even the Olympics, which both have their athletes test. Stated by Manny Navarro of the Miami
Herald, It s more about safeguarding fair play and saving students lives. . This statement shows that
these drugs may seem as if they are helping you in sports, they are also hurting you inside. At the

A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings Magical Realism
As said by Haruki Murakami, All things in my novels are real for me. Some western critics said that
Garcia Marquez s novels are magic realism. However, I believe that Marquez must have experienced
everything in his novels. Magical realism is a type of fiction that does not take place in some made up
world, it happens in reality. Although magical realism may seem like regular fiction, there are many
different things that help distinguish the two.
One element of magical realism is, a metamorphosis that takes place in the story and is treated as
normal by the characters. As an example, the story A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings, by Gabriel
García Márquez, reveals an old man with wings had crashed down to Earth during a storm, but is
quickly disregarded after the townspeople see a freak show containing a woman who had been
changed into a spider after she disobeyed her parents. (2) . The townspeople ... Show more content on

Consider the movie, Big Fish by Tim Burton, when Edward Bloom is walking through the forest after
leaving the town of Spectre and is attacked by trees. Edward is not surprised the trees can move like
most people would, instead he is scared because something is attacking him. Like with the novel Bless
Me Ultima, Ultima creates voodoo dolls of the three witches who cursed Lucas and had him breath on
them, after doing so Antonio saw the dolls take life. (93). Curanderas are religious healers, and a big
part of their religion and culture, which is why Ultima was able to create the dolls and know why they
came to life. Obviously, there are are multiple things that assist in seeing the difference between
magical realism and normal fantasy. Magical realism is based on real life, not something entirely new.
The reader does not wish to be a part of the world they are reading with magical realism, because they
are in that

Essay On Alcohol In The Military Alcoholism and Drugs in the military The word alcoholism is defined as an addiction to the consumption of alcoholic liquor or the mental illness and compulsive behavior resulting from alcohol dependency. People in the military use and abuse drugs and alcohol for the same reasons that other people do: Drugs and alcohol can make you feel good. But the military lifestyle also may include other issues that can affect alcohol and drug abuse, such as: The stress of being in armed conflict or knowing that you may be involved in armed conflict. Regarding medical expenditures, studies have found that excessive alcohol use by military members results in an annual cost of $425 million. Excessive drinking within the military is estimated to result in a loss of 320,000 work days and 34,400 arrests per year, half of which are for driving under the influence (Ames, G., and Cunradi, C. Charles Dickens also targeted the father figure in his works, how he was viewed and how children dealt with the absent of a father figure. Parents are important for the right upbringing of a child, their support and their care shape the child in what it would be in the future; the way parents behave and talk, their temperament also has an influence in the upbringing due to the fact that children copy what their parents do most of the times and a bad influence in going to take them on the wrong path when they grown up. While their battles are well documented and historically analyzed for over a hundred years, there is one aspect, one dark spot missing in the picture: the role of women in the American Civil War. From staying at home to take care of the children to disguising themselves as men to fight on the battlefield, women contributed in many ways to the war effort on both sides. Ever since the 1970 s it has been molded in a unique way each decade by various artist. Hip Hop is new compared to most genres of music and that s also one of the reasons I think it is still resented by the older generation. In this essay I will be dividing Hip hop or Rap into three categories, past, present, and the future. Hip hop has a rich history, but what it still has to offer is the reason it will be around for decades to come. I say this because there are a lot of young rappers where you cant understand sometimes what they are saying but the bass is so loud in the back it just makes you want to dance to it. There s nothing wrong with that in my opinion but like everything else that s new it will be resented but eventually praised for its new style. Although, there rules that apply to both forms of storytelling. The first rule is that the story incorporates paralinguistic mechanisms such as pausing, space, etc. (Bauman). The second rule is that the story flows naturally, and clearly makes sense. It is not allowed that a storyteller has a story that is choppy or jumpy to the point that the viewer does not understand. One of the most important rules is that the storyteller succeeds in continuing the story in alphabetical, or numerical, order. Similarly, if one tells the story in the reverse order, one cannot skip a letter, or number (Bauman). Lastly, for alphabetical stories there are allowable deviations and those that are not allowed. For example, many storytellers interchange 2 hand shapes such as N, H, U, and V. This deviation, along with the interchange of the 3 hand shapes M and W, are allowable deviations (Bauman). However, the usage of the time out sign as T in A Z stories is an example of a deviation that is not allowed (Bauman). These vital rules to alphabetical and numerical storytelling aid in contributing to the overall purpose. Accepting a person or a situation for exactly what it is rather than trying to manipulate it into what you think it needs to be is a way to happiness. The main idea of Sherman Alexie s story entitled What You Pawn I Will Redeem is not let anyone or anything control, limit, repress or discourage you from being your true self because only you can determine who you truly are as a person. Specifically in this story, the main character is experiencing an identity crisis caused by the colonization of the White Folks. This story claims this idea through symbolism to show the death of the Indian culture, through connotation to show the differences between the past and the present Native Indians generation and through characterization to show how the Indian population are still trying to find their true identity as a part of the Indian nation. Symbolism is used to show how important it is not to let anyone define who you truly are because in Jackson s and the Indian nation s case, it had caused the death of their culture. The main purpose of this piece is to inform people who are interested in the Nobel Prize selection and in Camus himself about him, providing a short synopsis on his background and his movement in his career from political journalism to writing essays, stories, and furthermore novels. Growing up, Camus expressed a deep interest to philosophy, which later prevailed in all of his publications as well as his Algerian upbringing. Although his fascinations to the mind and thought were definitely present, he was unable to attend university for philosophy; however, luck struck him when he was able to begin working as a columnist and later dabbled in theatre. In many of his works, he utilized the notion of absurdum and absence, seen heavily in The Myth of Sisyphus and further elaborated upon in the main character of Meursault in The Stranger. After three weeks simulation of trading on Australian Stock Exchange, in retrospect, I amazingly find there are substantial bias impacts on my decision with respect to choosing, selling and keeping stocks. The following table lists the most fundamental heuristic or bias I had during the time I made decisions for stocks: Table 1: Decision Heuristic/Bias Heuristic/Bias Buying Holding Selling Regression to the Mean +/ + Gambler s Fallacy + + 0 Confirmation Bias 0 + + Efficient Market Hypothesis 0 0 Explanation of symbols: + overemphasis of the heuristic/bias overlook of the heuristic/bias 0 absence of the heuristic/bias Regression to the Mean Regression to the mean is the law of nature that if the observations are higher or lower than the average measurement, the expected value s tendency progresses toward the mean (Week 4 Lecture Slides). • 29. War on Japan Essay through history, man always seems to be at war. In some cases he is the attacker, in others the defender. In both cases, these wars are broken down into two basic elements, the battles that are fought and the individuals who fight them. The elements conflict, courage, fear, cowardice, heroism, victory, and defeat make up the exploits of war we record in our history books. This paper will deal with war, more specifically, a special exploit within one of the most significant wars ever experienced. World War II involved millions of fighting men around the world. What if Army bombers could take off an aircraft carrier? Low tried his idea on Admiral King. King thought the idea had potential so he sent it on to Captain Donald Duncan to turn his plan into fact. This he did, and the Tokyo Raid became fact instead of fiction. The first step in the plan was finding a leader. General Arnold requested Lieutenant Colonel James Dolittle as the man to select the plane and the men for the mission. Dolittle accepted the challenge without hesitation. Arnold let him know in no uncertain terms that he was to be a planner not a pilot. As Doolittle went to work on the project, he saw a lot of problems. First of all, carrier landings were impossible for twin engine bombers. Next, the total air trip was eleven hundred miles. The closest landing area would be in Russia, but Joseph Stalin would not let them land there because he didn t want to be invaded by Japan since he already had his hands full with the Germans. Fortunately, China said it was all right to land there but they said it reluctantly. With these considerations and others, Doolittle determined that the chances of the mission succeeding was fifty fifty. Despite the odds, the decision was made to begin the project. As the first step, despite Arnold, Doolittle wrote himself into the plan as a pathfinder. Doolittle s job during the attack would be to light up Tokyo with incendiary ... While he s jumping over fences and getting lost and tricking everyone into thinking he s dead, you keep going back and forth from thinking you know what kind of character traits he holds. He keeps the reader in constant confusion throughout the whole book, at least that s what he did for me. Krakow Research Paper Only a few miles from Poland s second largest cities, Krakow, lies a nearly barren field with only a moderate sized memorial to the thousands of people killed in a brutal act of genocide. Here, between 1941 and 1945, thousands of enemies of the Nazi party, primarily Jews, were worked, starved, died of disease, or were shot. Out of the over 150,000 people sent through Plaszow and its sub camps, only around 2,000 survived. From its establishment in 1941 to its liquidation in January 1945, thousands of people lost their lives or were sent to their deaths in other camps. In the years before the German occupation, the Jewish population of Krakow was usually around 70,000. After the Nazi conquest, the Jews were persecuted relentlessly. Between May and December of 1941, 55,000 Krakow Jews were forced into the countryside, and between 15,000 and 20,000 remaining Jews were housed in the newly established Krakow Ghetto. Here is a little story about a commercial of the Intel 360 replay. Their slogan is, it makes everything look epic. Tom Brady (A Super Bowl Champion) wakes up and yawns, brushes his teeth, makes pancakes and as he tosses the pancake in the pan it falls down and he and the dog looks at the fallen pancake and Brady grabs it as the dog is also running to get it, so to Intel the replay is epic. The obsession of architecture with this term is slowly taking over; architects strive towards creating Iconic buildings as a way to gain fame. How does one design an Iconic building and what does it imply when placed within a particular context? We will explore this through a particular architectural project of the church of San Giovanni Battista under Florence, an icon which never really succeeded in achieving its purpose and yet contains some of the very fundamental and curcial ideas about the Iconic which I want to express in this essay. In the church of the highway however, the bells are beneath the weight of architecture, hidden by the concrete slabs. This furthermore reinforces Michelucci s idea of creating an icon of speed: architecture that is not meant to become a centre of a town or unifying element of society, but rather a glimpse of a flash. Most methods of data collection can be used across studies that are classified as qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods. As a matter of fact, the way a specific method is employed for data collection determines the classification of a study to a large extent (Kumar, 2014, Page 170). The primary data that is collected should be data that a person not only understands, but data that they can clearly analyze. Given the option, the non experimental methodology seemed to be most comfortable. Lamentations 3:40 states, Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord (KJV). Qualitative study designs are not as specific, precise and well defined as designs in qualitative research. Also, there is degree or overlap between study designs and methods of data collection. Some of the commonly used designs in qualitative research are: case study design, oral history, focus group studies, participant observation, commonly discussion forums and the reflective journal log (Kumar, 2014, Page 161). The Best American Essays of the Century, written by Robert Atwan, showcases the progress this country has made through a series of essays ordered chronologically. Although many underlying topics existed in these pieces, three common themes particularly stood out. In How It Feels to Be Colored Me by Zora Neale Hurston, The Old Stone House by Edmund Wilson, and The Handicapped by Randolph Bourne, identity is an important subject. Injustice is a clearly shared theme in Coatesville by John Jay Chapman, The Devil Baby at Hull House by Jane Addams, and Of the Coming of John by W.E.B. Du Bois. Finally, in Corn pone Opinions by Mark Twain, Tradition and the Individual Talent by T.S. Eliot, and What Are Masterpieces and Why Are There So Few of Them by Gertrude Stein, the aspect of non personality and the removal of one s self seems to be commonly spoken of in terms of creation. The first motif, identity, appears initially in How It Feels to Be Colored Me where it says, But I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow damned up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I do not mind at all. (p. 115) Here, it is obvious that the author holds no shame in her skin nor self. Anti Semitic And Anti Zionist Movement By the late nineteenth century, the Jews, who had been in exile for almost two thousand years, found their ancestral homeland in Palestine, which was largely occupied by Arabs and governed by the Turks; this dilemma sparked many problems within the Middle East. Since the rise of the Zionist movement and the establishment of the State of Israel in May 1948, political leaders of predominately Muslim nations in the Middle East have made discriminatory prejudice anti Semitic statements or actions. Allowing for apportioning or deflection of blame, contradicting the stated social and theological morality of the Islamic faith, this technique has been used as a tool for political control by regimes in this region for the past century. The relationship between anti Semitic and anti Zionist views in the Middle East are shown through the nature of the governments involved in the anti Zionist movement, the relationship these nations had with the state of Israel, the effect it had on the Arabic people living within these countries and the assumptions made on Judaism and Zionism. After World War II, Britain found itself in intense conflict with the Jewish community over Jewish immigration limits, as well as continued conflict with the Arab community over limit levels, as they had to put an end to the British mandate set in Palestine.
